Places to see in ( Hendaye - France )

Places to see in ( Hendaye - France )

Hendaye is the last town that you come to before reaching Spain when travelling along the coast of south-west France, known as the Cote d'Argent. The town stands on the right bank of the Bidassoa river that marks the frontier with Spain. The small island in the river, the Ile des Faisans, was an important border location for several centuries, culminating in the Treaty of the Pyrenees being signed on the island in 1659. The Treaty finally brought to an end the centuries of conflict between France and Spain in the border regions. One curious result - the island itself (which is uninhabited) alternates every six months between being French territory and Spanish territory.

Hendaye has been a historically important frontier town for many centuries and is more of a year-round town than many along the coast. The resort part of Hendaye has a long sandy beach that is popular with sunbathers and windsurfers alike. At the northern end of the beach there is a rocky promontory providing some shelter for the beach and an attractive backdrop. There are perhaps rather more high-rise apartments behind parts of the beach in Hendaye than in some of the more recently developed resorts further north up the coast, but there are also a good number of belle-epoque villas to be seen.

The more developed part of Hendaye seafront is to the east, while the traditional villas are mostly further west along the Boulevard de la Mer. A pedestrian promenade follows most of the length of the beach. There are also some features of historical interest in Hendaye such as the Great Cross of Hendaye in the main square. The church of Saint-Vincent, built in the 16th century, is the centre of the town. The unusual moorish style of the building that was originally Hendaye Casino is also interesting.

The pleasure and fishing port is also a pleasant place to explore: it is behind the town and beach in a small area in the large bay formed by the river estuary: just keep following the Boulevard de la Mer westwards and you will find it. The most interesting part of the town itself is on the hill behind the seafront, with views across the sea and also to the Pyrenees that start just inland.

( Hendaye - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Hendaye . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Hendaye - France

Located on the Basque coast, the town which is part of the Basque province of Labourd is bordered to the north-northwest by the Bay of Biscay (or Biscay) and to the south by the Franco-Spanish border near which it includes the first foothills of the western Pyrenees.

Located on the Aquitaine coast south of Bayonne between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye, it is part of the Côte d'Argent and the urban area of Bayonne. It adjoins the urban area of Irun-Hendaye, however it is still a strongly rural area despite the proximity of Socoa beach.

Its sizable territory contrasts between the jagged Atlantic coastline to the north with vertical cliffs over the ocean, and the foothills of the Pyrenees along the Franco-Spanish border to the south.

Places to see in ( Hendaye - France ) Hendaye Beach

Places to see in ( Hendaye - France ) Hendaye Beach

Located a few hundred meters from Spain, Hendaye is one of the most important seaside destinations in Pays Basque in France. We find the most beautiful beaches of the Cote Basque stretching over close to three kilometers along the seafront between sand and typical Basque houses, between the harbor and the twin rocks. A large pool of water is available for those who love to sail.

Note that Hendaye is reputed for having the calmest beaches on the Cote Basque thanks to the protection of Cap Figuier and the pointe Sainte Anne. The beaches benefit from a very feeble incline that allows easy swimming, even for young children. A kid's club is available as well.

Hendaye is also a thalassotherapy center reputed on the seafront, near the harbor. For those who would like to alternate beaches and hiking trips, Hendaye is the ideal destination: coastal path, trail in the bay of Txingudi or the summet of the Rhune with its enchanting view of the Cote Basque.

France, Spain: Burt Wolf Travels & Traditions (#1501)

#1501 Basking With The Basques
The Basque country straddles the border between southwest France and northeast Spain, but except for their passports the Basques are neither French nor Spanish -- they are Basque. They speak the oldest European language still spoken, so old that no one can tell where it came from. In this program Burt travels through the Basque country, visits the hometown of the first person to sail completely around the world, looks at the early works of Andy Warhol in the Bilbao Museum, and tastes what the Basques are eating and drinking.

Fort Socoa in Ciboure was originally built under the rule of Henry IV to protect the region from the Spanish invaders. Fort Socoa was however rebuilt later under the reign of Louis XIII. In 1636, the Spanish army took the fort. A few years later, French sovereignty was restored. Great place worth visiting in France.

In 1686, Vauban strenghtened the Fort and planned to build a pier to improve access to the Fort. The work of the fort was ended in 1698. The site housed a barracks and a chapel.
The western part of the bay of St Jean de Luz slowly merges with the petite hamlet of Socoa. The entrance to the bay is defended by Fort de Socoa – a medieval-like fortification with breathtaking natural surroundings, and an all-time-favourite off-beat destination in France.

Care to know more about the history, the character, and the touring details about Fort de Socoa? Here is how we experienced the place.

The History of Fort de Socoa
The erection of Fort de Socoa was initiated during the reign of Henri IV at the very end of the 16th century. Still, its most celebrated element – the circular tower – was constructed in 1627 under the command of Louis XIV. By this time, the fort is essentially an islet, accessible by foot only at low tide.

Later, by the end of the 17th century, the renowned French military architect and engineer Vauban paid a visit to Fort de Socoa and sketched a design for a road, connecting the fortification to the shore. He also planned and constructed a set of barrack houses in the inner area at the foot of the tower.

That’s how Fort de Socoa reached its final outlook, which is nowadays available for tourists and visitors. It served as a defensive fort until the middle of the 19th century. It was later assigned to the Customs services, then used for sailing-related activities, before finally opening to the public as a tourist location.

What is there to see in and around the fort
The fort is famous for its massive central tower, which is essentially medieval when it comes to architectural style.

The tower has three floors with gun openings, a cellar, and an open roof where defensive cannons were installed. The eastern side of the tower has a spiral staircase that is overlooking the sea. The tower is enclosed by a loopholed interior wall with an uneven square form.

The scenery around the tower is truly breathtaking and is honestly a good enough reason to pay a visit. Walking along the sea wall and feeling the waves crashing beneath your feet is a feeling worth experiencing, although you need to be particularly careful during strong winds.

The area is particularly tourist-friendly, with a lot of hotels and restaurants less than a kilometer away from the fortress. So, all you need to do is reach out and seize the adventure.

We are Yuri and Julia, the travel couple, and we love exploring Europe.
