Places to see in ( Urbino - Italy )
Urbino is a walled city in central Italy. It's known for the turreted, 15th-century Palazzo Ducale. Inside the palace, the National Gallery of the Marche features paintings by Titian and Raphael, who was born in Urbino. Raphael’s House has more paintings, including ones by the artist’s father. Next to the neoclassical cathedral is the Museo Diocesano Albani, with religious artifacts dating back to the 13th century.
Urbino is quite a small town, confined to a couple of hilltops enclosed within defensive walls, and it's not hard to get your bearings. From the gateway (Porta Valbona) by the bus stops in Borgo Mercatale, you can visit a tourist information office on your right, or just walk up Via Mazzini to Piazza della Repubblica. This is a crossroads at the centre of Urbino; other roads slope up to the town's various 'summits'. Taking Via Vittorio Veneto, on your right, will lead you to another tourist information office - where you can obtain maps and timetables - and the Ducal Palace. In the other direction Via Raffaello leads past Raphael's house and up to a great viewpoint (more below).
The Ducal Palace - Palazzo Ducale - is Urbino's principal tourist attraction. A combined ticket is available for this and Urbino's other museums; it's worth buying if you plan to tour the town thoroughly. Over-65s and under-18s, as so often in Italy, can visit the Ducal Palace free of charge.The current main entrance to the palace is surprisingly unassuming; inside the courtyard, however, the visitor begins to taste the grandeur of Federico's commission. His name appears everywhere: 'Federicus Urbini Dux' or simply 'FE DUX', on walls, fireplaces and window frames. The rooms of the palace are mostly bare, although one does retain scraps of courtly frescoes. The highly-decorative doorways and fireplaces are an indication of the splendour which the ducal court would have enjoyed. Federico's 'alcove' is one of the most interesting exhibits - a kind of ornate painted wood room within a room, which was found in pieces in the nineteenth century in underground storage. The best-preserved room of the palace is the duke's private study, a small secret space within his apartment, which is beautifully panelled in inlaid wood. Art in the gallery includes the Flagellation by Piero della Francesca, a view of an empty Renaissance 'Ideal City' by Luciano Laurana, Raphael's portrait of The Mute and works by Guercino, Guido Reni and Orazio Gentileschi. Don't miss the painting by Pedro Berruguete of the ugly Federico, reading, with his young son. The most famous painting of the duke, by Piero della Francesca, is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The artist Raffaello Sanzio - better known to English speakers as Raphael - was born in Urbino, and his birthplace is now a little museum, the Casa Natale di Raffaello. Raphael's father was court painter to Federico and obviously a man of some standing. The family home is a substantial building with an attractive interior. It was purchased in the nineteenth century with the financial support of a 'nobleman from London' and has been kept fairly bare, with some minor artworks and copies of paintings by Raphael on the walls. It's a good chance to see a historic town house, probably little changed from the time when Raphael was growing up. Note that the museum is closed for several hours in the middle of the day.
Down a lane opposite the Ducal Palace, behind the church of San Domenico, is a fifteenth-century fresco of the Madonna, which can be seen through a glass wall. There are more exciting frescoes, though, in the Oratorio di San Giovanni, on Via Barocci.
Some of the finest views over Urbino are from the top of the slope opposite the Palazzo Ducale. A small public park here - the Parco della Resistenza - is a lovely place to sit with a picnic or a snack from the small cafe and admire the views over Urbino's rooftops. The park is alongside the Fortezza Albornorz, Urbino's defensive fortress, and there are entrances from Viale Buozzi, outside the walls, and from Via dei Maceri, which branches off at the top of the steep Via Raffaello.

10 Most UNDERRATED and OVERRATED Places To Visit In Italy!
If you're thinking of visiting Italy and want to make sure that you see the best it has to offer and avoid the hype, look no further. Here are Italy's Most Underrated and Overrated Destinations.
First up are the most underrated.
1. Castelli Romani.
Castelli Romani is a series of 14 small towns southeast of Rome in the Alban Hills. Each little town has its own distinct beauty and strong points, be it the Volcanic Lake of Nemi, or the Lake Di Albano, the bread from Genzano, the roast pig from Ariccia, or the beautiful park in Frascati, its easy to see why the Pope's have their summer home here and also why it's one of Rome's best-kept secrets.
2. Urbino.
Urbino is a walled city in the Marche region of Italy, Urbino is similar to Tuscany but cheaper and with about a quarter of the tourists. Rich in history and art, walking through its streets will take you back 600 years to the Renaissance then you can sit at one of its many restaurants to try its trademark pasta and wine, Strozzapreti, and Verdicchio white wine.
3. Procida.
Procida is a little island off the coast of Naples. If you are looking for the old romantic Italy, white sand beaches, colorful fishing boats in a quaint harbor, and a rainbow of houses lining the streets, then Procida is the place to go, Procida is like Capri but without the Jet-set, no designer shops or fancy spas, just traditional Italian beauty without the glitter on top.
4. Arcipelago Di La Maddalena.
The Maddalena archipelago is a group of seven islands in the Strait of Bonifacio, only three of them are inhabited, Caprera, Santo Stefano, and Maddalena, Maddalena is also a national park, its beautiful coastline, hospitable people, and ancient fortifications are just some of the reasons its a popular holiday destination for the Italians, especially among boaters.
5. Turin.
Turin is a different side of Italy, unlike the romantic towns that represent the simple slower lifestyle of fishermen and farmers, Turin is the industrial side of Italy, where the rich built their palaces, the religious built their cathedrals, and the studious built their museums. Turin has so much to offer that you'll need at least 2 to 3 days there just to begin to appreciate it.
Now The Most Overrated!
1. Milan.
Milan may be famous for fashion but the city itself is rather depressing, most of its architecture was destroyed during WWII, and of what is left, only The Milan Cathedral is really worth a visit but even that feels a little too modern. In Milan, it seems that the weather, the architecture, and the cuisine strive to be noticed by differing from the Italian norm but end up being a little too dull to really stand out.
2. Capri.
Capri is beautiful but its popularity with the rich and famous has damaged it greatly, It gives the feeling of an exclusive club with a dress code to get in. If you aren't rich, you probably won't feel comfortable and if you are rich, seeing so many cookie-cutter versions of yourself will probably make you feel uncomfortable too! especially when you can visit Procida and get the Caprician experience without having to deal with Capricious people.
3. Trieste.
Trieste is one e short of triste which means sad in Italian and this is, in fact, a rather good description of the city. Trieste has a high living standard, it's popular with students and researchers, it's plagued by the Bora, a cold wind coming from the north that can reach speeds of up to 80mph (129kph) and can last for days, its architecture is large and yet oddly unimpressive, and it is also one of the safest cities in the world. If you are thinking of living here then it is probably the ideal location, but for a vacation, Trieste is a little too, Triste.
4. Costa Smeralda.
The Emerald Coast is another one of those locations that became popular with the extremely rich and famous and has now become the go-to place for the not-so rich and famous and the We'd like people to think we're rich and famous. Prices are high all year round but in August they become abusive. This gives you the feeling of a place that isn't really Italian but has been made to look Italian, like little Italy in New York or Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, what the Emerald Coast has gained in notoriety it has lost in authenticity, and what once was a Gem is now nothing more than cut glass!
5. Cortona.
Cortona became famous because of the book Under The Tuscan Sun. It is now visited by thousands of people trying to relive the story and search out the locations mentioned within the book's pages, this may all seem very romantic, but the truth is that quaint towns like Cortona are dotted all over Italy and when compared to them, Cortona doesn't really have anything special to offer, unless of course, you enjoy walking down old stones streets with hundreds of other tourists.

In the 15th century, Urbino, a little hill town in Marche, underwent a tremendous cultural flowering that drew artists and intellectuals from all over Italy and beyond and had an impact on cultural trends across the rest of Europe. Due to the economic and cultural standstill that began in the 16th century, Urbino Citta has managed to retain a significant amount of its Renaissance aspect.
Urbino Italia, a traditional hill town (1,650 feet above sea level), features four gates and a medieval wall. At Piazza della Repubblica, the town's central square, two major routes intersect. Due to this cultural environment, Raffaello, Donato Bramante, and mathematician Luca Pacioli were able to flourish in their own art and science.

The Oratory of St John the Baptist is a 14th-century small chapel or prayer hall located in Via Francesco Barocci, in Urbino, Region of the Marche, Italy. The oratory is best known for its late Gothic style fresco cycle (1416) by the brothers Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni.
The subjects include a Madonna dell’Umiltà and a Crucifixion, In addition the oratory has scenes from the life of John the Baptist such as: the Annunciation of Birth; his Baptism of Jesus, Career in Baptizing, and Sermons of St John.
It was the seat of the Confraternity of the same name, which was joined, at the beginning of the twentieth century, also that of St. Anthony the Abbot, for the demolition of the oratory of the same confraternity located near the Mercatale hamlet, and of St. James the Apostle.
Inside you can admire an impressive cycle of frescoes representing the Crucifixion of Christ , in the wall behind the main altar, and the Stories of the life of Saint John the Baptist along the side walls, a masterpiece of the brothers Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni from San Severino Marche , datable between 1415 and 1416. The external façade was the subject of a radical restoration in the Neo - Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century, designed by Diomede Catalucci .
