Some of the best attractions to see in Minnesota and Wisconsin on the Great River Road Trip are The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, The Glensheen Historic Estate, and Jay Cooke State Park in Minnesota. The Lower Wisconsin Riverway, The Taliesin Estate, and The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Wisconsin.
The Great River Road Trip was one of the United States’ first scenic byways. Starting in 1931, it wound along the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St. Paul and on up to Lake Superior.
The idea for this trip came from a man named Horace King who wanted to create an American equivalent of the famous European driving tour known as The Grand Tour. He thought that following America’s longest river would be perfect for such a trip but had no way of knowing what people might expect or enjoy seeing along the way. He turned to his friend John Nolen and asked him if he would come up with some suggestions for places that could be added to make it into a true scenic byway, like those found in Europe. Today it is a famous place for scenic road trips.

Check out this view of Alton from a drone
The 5 On Your Side drone flew over Alton this week, capturing some of the city’s most prominent landmarks and views.
The drone flew over the statue of Robert Wadlow, the tallest man in the world. Wadlow was born in 1918 and suffered from a pituitary gland problem. He grew to be nine feet tall and 500 pounds. A life-size statue of Wadlow is on College Avenue and visitors come to take photos alongside.
The drone also flew over downtown Alton, which is a hub for shopping, dining and nightlife.
In 2018, Alton won $500,000 to redevelop its downtown. The city entered a competition for the Hulu show Small Business Revolution. About 30,000 other cities around the country also competed in the show. The funds will go toward projects, renovations, marketing campaigns and other improvements.
The Argosy Casino sits along the Mississippi River. The casino is inside the Alton Belle, which used to cruise for one hour to follow Illinois gambling laws. It has been permanently moored since 1999. The casino was forced to close last year due to flooding.
The drone also captured video of the Piasa Bird is another Alton landmark. It is an elaborate painting of a bird on the bluffs along the Mississippi. There are many stories about its origin.

An Illinois Tourist Town on the Mighty Mississippi: Grafton, IL 5K.
Grafton is a nice place to spend a weekend getaway for many in the St. Louis area and beyond. Situated along the Mississippi River, Grafton has other geographical features to appreciate such as the string of Limestone Bluffs that parallel the river. You also have Pere Marquette State Park nearby.

This trip along the Mississippi River was wonderful to see the bluffs, the quaint cities and railroad track running parallel to the Mississippi River.
We crossed over to Winona, Minnesota and then back to Wisconsin at LaCrosse on I90.
