Originally known as Amarkot, the present town of Umerkot was the capital of medieval Sindh province, including some parts of present Rajasthan (Rajputana) state of India. This province was ruled by the Hindu Sodha family (one of the subclans of the Paramara Rajputs). It also became prominent during the time of the Mughals and during the British Raj. The Mughal king Akbar was born in Amarkot/Umerkot when his father Humayun fled from military defeat at the hands of the Pathan/Afghan warrior Sher Shah Suri. Rana Prasad, a Hindu Sodha Rajput ruler of Amarkot, gave refuge to Humayun. Later the Mughal Emperor Akbar brought North India, including modern day Pakistan under Mughal rule and he confirmed the Ranas of this locale in their 'jagir' and estates.
Modern Umerkot has many sites of historical significance such as Mughal emperor Akbar's birthplace at Amarkot/Umarkot Fort where he was born on 14/15th October 1542, this was also the old residence of the Ranas, the earliest foundations of which probably go back to medieval times, around 13th or 14th century, along with later 18th and 19th century changes. Recently, Rana Chandra Singh Sodha (1931–2009) was the Rana of the former Amarkot jagir after 1947, and remained a member of Pakistan's National Assembly and also a federal minister.
The former Rana family no longer lives in Amarkot Fort, which is managed by the Sindh provincial government, they have a house at 'Rana Jagir' their main estate

Umerkot[a] (Urdu: عُمَركوٹ, Dhatki عُمَركوٹ), Sindhi (عمرڪوٽ) formerly known as Amarkot, is a city in Umerkot District in the Sindh province of Pakistan. The city was the birthplace of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. It is the 68th largest city in Pakistan.
The local language is Dhatki, which is one of the Rajasthani languages of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is most closely related to Marwari. Sindhi, Urdu, and Punjabi are also understood by the citizens.
Umerkot province was ruled by the Sodha Rajput clan of Hindu Rajputs from medieval times until 1947 Partition of British India. The city held prominence during the Mughal Empire Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar and the British Raj. Mughal Emperor Akbar The Great was born in Amarkot on 14 October 1542 when his father Humayun fled from the military defeat at the hands of Sher Shah Suri. Rana Parshad, the Sodha Rajput ruler of Umarkot, gave him refuge. Later on, Akbar brought northwestern India, including modern-day Pakistan under the Mughal rule.
Marvi of Umar Marvi love saga was kept here at Amarkot fort. Its ruler Rana Ratan Singh was hanged by the British at this fort for standing up for the rights of the Sindhis.
Umerkot was annexed by Jodhpur State in the 18th century and its rulers were reduced to Vassals. Umerkot and its fort were later handed to the British in 1847 by the Maharaja of Jodhpur in return for reducing the tribute imposed on Jodhpur State by Rs.10,000. Due to this the Rana of Umerkot did not have much say in whether to join India or Pakistan, although he expressed his desire to join Pakistan because of his Sindhi roots.[citation needed] Umerkot was the only state with a Hindu majority and a Hindu King, that acceded to Pakistan. Rana Chandra Singh, a federal minister and the chieftain of the Hindu Sodha Thakur Rajput clan and the Umerkot Jagir, was one of the founder members of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan from Umarkot, seven times with PPP between 1977 and 1999 when he founded the Pakistan Hindu Party (PHP). Currently, his politician son Rana Hamir Singh is the 26th Rana of Tharparkar, Umarkot, and Mithi.
The city is well connected with the other large cities like Karachi, the provincial capital and Hyderabad. Umarkot has many sites of historical significance such as Akbar's birthplace, Umarkot, Umerkot Fort and Momal Ji Mari. There is an ancient temple, Shiv Mandir, Umerkot, as well as a Kali Mata Temple, Krishna Mandir at old Amarkot and Manhar Mandir Kathwari Mandir at Rancho Line.
The story of Umar Marvi is that Marvi was a young Thari girl abducted by then-ruler, Umar, who wanted to marry her because of her beauty. Upon her refusal, she was imprisoned in the historic Umerkot Fort for several years. Because of her courage, Marvi is regarded as a symbol of love for one's soil and homeland.

Umerkot Fort | A Fort in Pakistan Where Beauty was Caged. It is 7 AM. I am entering in Umerkot Fort. It is situated in Umerkot city in Sindh Province. Its area is about 17 acres. Umerkot city was founded by Amar Singh who was the first king of the Sumra dynasty. 1050-1350. Later It fort was occupied by Parmar Sodh, a Rajpur Ruler in the 14th century. The museum is closed. I am in hurry to reach Sukkur before sunset. The famous Mughal Emperor Akbar was born in Umerkot when his father emperor Humayon was wandering after defeat by Sher Shah Suri in 1541 that Time, Rana Parshad had given refuge to Emperor Humayon. Later it fort remained under the Kalhora dynasty, Raja Jodhpur, Talpur Dynasty, and British. Another significant story relating to Umarkot is Umar Marvi. Marvi was a young Thari girl abducted by then-ruler, Umar, who wanted to marry her because of her beauty. She refused to marry the king and finally returned to her home untouched. she was imprisoned in this historic Umerkot Fort for several years. Because of her courage, Marvi is regarded as a symbol of love for one's soil and homeland.

When the name of Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar comes to mind, the names of Mughal Empire, Divine Religion and Rajput Jodha Bai come to mind. If the question is where King Akbar was born then many minds would like to take the option of Google search. King Akbar was born in Umerkot when Humayun retreated to Umerkot after retreating from the battle and at that time this poor patriot king was accompanied by only a few riders and his wife Hameedah Bano.
The uncrowned king distributed musk nafah among his companions on the occasion of the joy of the birth of his son and said these words, As the sown musk perfumes its surroundings, one day the fame of this child will spread all over the world.
A monument has been erected at the place of Akbar's birth in Umerkot, along with a small garden.
After the death of Humayun, Akbar ascended the throne at the age of 13 and he expanded the Mughal Empire many times by force of sword and this empire lasted till the British occupied the region.
Umerkot city is located at a distance of about three hundred kilometers from Karachi. There are also roads from Mirpur Khas, Sanghar and Thar, while the road from Super Highway to Mirpur Khas and then from there to Umerkot is better.
Prior to the construction of the road from Karachi to Mithi, the city was the center of important commercial activities and was known as the gateway to Thar.
The fort of Umerkot was considered the key to politics in this region. It is located at the important confluence of Marwar and Mehran valleys of Rajasthan.
Umerkot is named after a fort here, where memories of many romance and heroic characters are buried. Umerkot was also ruled by the Rajput Thackeray and later the Soomra dynasty. Marvi, one of the five heroines or heroines of Sindh Sufi poet Abdul Latif, was born here.
Marvi belonged to the nomadic tribe of Thar. When the then ruler Omar Soomro heard rumors of her beauty, Marvi was abducted from her village Bhalwa when she came to draw water from a well.
Omar offered marriage to Marvi which he turned down after which he was imprisoned, various temptations were given but Omar Badshah did not succeed, finally gave up and left Marvi as his sister in his village.
Shah Abdul Latif has made this whole story the subject of his poetry and Marvi's character has become a symbol of patriotism and love for his people.
There is a museum in the fort of Umerkot, in which in addition to the ancient weapons, there are munjik shells which were used to hit the walls of the forts, jewelery used in the region.
The desert area also starts with the city of Umerkot. On one side there are green fields and on the other side there is a series of dunes.
The train bound for India passes through various cities of Umerkot district and crosses the border across Khokhra. This is an ancient route. At the time of partition of the subcontinent, many families including Mehdi Hassan, Mushtaq Ahmed Yousifi and Dr. Mubarak Ali had crossed this border and entered the borders of Pakistan.

Marvi of Umar Marvi love saga was kept here at Amarkot fort. Its ruler Rana Ratan Singh was hanged by the British at this fort for standing up for the rights of the Sindhis.
Umerkot was annexed by Jodhpur State in the 18th century and its rulers were reduced to Vassals. Umerkot and its fort was later handed to the British in 1847 by the Maharaja of Jodhpur in return for reducing the tribute imposed on Jodhpur State by Rs.10,000. Due to this the Rana of Umerkot did not have much say in whether to join India or Pakistan, although he expressed his desire to join Pakistan because of his Sindhi roots. Umerkot was the only state with a Hindu majority and a Hindu King, that acceded to Pakistan.
