City of Ulcinj - Montenegro, Town of pirates

Ulcinj is the southernmost city at Montenegrin coast and one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast. This is town of the tumultuous past and glorious tradition is placed above the rocks, like the ship which sails into sea. Nobody could conquer it from the sea although the sea waves plash it from the three sides. Its history dates back to at least 25 centuries, during which different civilizations are changed, enriching the city with a valuable cultural and historical heritage.

During the Ottoman rule a part of the population who lived along the coast was engaged in piracy so Ulcinj was the «capital» of the pirates of the Adriatic Sea. Also during the period of Turkish reign Ulcinj was one of the biggest «market» of the wrecked people in this part of the world.

Throughout the XX century Ulcinj had a strong turning point. At this time the Salt factory – Solana and the hotels were built, which made Ulcinj to an economic and tourist centre in the state.

Ulcinj is a unique mix of many styles and cultures, reflected in city walls, fortifications, street network of markets and squares, in urban buildings, many of which are used for their intended purpose to this day. Unlike other parts of Montenegro, Ulcinj has an Oriental flavor – the long-standing Ottoman presence in the area as well as the large Muslim population in the town.

Nature has been very generous towards this part of the Adriatic coast, by creating a colourful mosaic of magnificent contrasts in a unique way. As if nature had long ago examined the variety of wishes and demands of modern people to keep in touch with its unspoiled existence, so it awarded this area with: the dark-blue clean sea, the green-eyed river Bojana and the island Ada on its delta, the rich lake Shas, the long-living olive grove, the beautiful Valdanos bay, the healing springs, the pine wood with its enchanting smell and the well known sandy beaches.

KOTOR, MONTENEGRO (2023) | 10 Best Things To Do In & Around Kotor

Kotor is a medieval town located in a secluded corner of the stunning Bay of Kotor. In this video, we’ll show you 10 of the best things to do in and around this magical town.

???? Rent a car in Montenegro:
???? Recommended stay - Casa del Sole Lux (the host is lovely!!):

10. Explore the old town
Wander the maze of narrow streets and simply enjoy the architecture. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, this old town has a lot of character. From its decorated gates, to its orthodox and catholic churches, cozy squares, and Venetian palaces, every corner holds a story.

☑️ Kotor private walking tour with food & wine tasting:

9. Walk the city walls
Covering about 4.5 kilometers or 3 miles, the thick walls were built to protect the town, which was an important naval and trading center. Today, the walls are crumbling in some sections and it isn’t possible to walk all the way around the Old Town. But there are still several parts that you can easily access, such as the Gurdić Bastion and the Kampana Tower.

8. Visit a museum
The old town of Kotor is home to a few interesting museums, such as the Cats Museum and the Maritime Museum.

7. Watch the sunset from the fortress
Above Kotor’s city walls, you can find old St. John’s fortress. You’ll have to walk 1,350 steps to get there. The best time to visit is in the early morning or an hour or two before sunset as it’s generally a bit cooler and the light is best for pictures. Find the trail entrance behind the Church of St. Mary Collegiate.

6. Cool down at Kotor beach
Kotor doesn’t have any long beaches, but small ones are scattered around the bay. The closest one is Kotor Beach, which can be found right outside the old town. Alternatively, head to Orahovac or Bajova Kula beach on the way to Perast.

5. Try Montenegrin wine
Kotor’s old town is filled with a variety of charming restaurants and bars where you can sample the local cuisine and wine. Some bars offer wine tastings where you can try indigenous Vranac wine, such as the Old Winery Wine Bar.

4. Explore nearby Perast
The Bay of Kotor is dotted with picturesque villages, but nearby Perast might be the most charming one.

3. Go on a boat tour in the bay
During a 3-hour tour you visit the church on the man-made island of Our Lady of the Rocks, pass through a cave where submarines used to be hidden, spot the old prison on Mamula Island, and swim in the magical Blue Cave.

☑️ Boat tour of the Bay + Blue Cave from Kotor:

2. Hike the Ladder of Kotor
The Ladder of Kotor is an old caravan trail that used to connect Kotor with the old capital of Montenegro. The switchback trail offers some breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor.

1. Drive the serpentine road to Lovćen National Park
From Kotor, it’s a short 45 minute drive to Mt Lovćen National Park via a narrow serpentine road that takes you up to the mountains. Driving this road is a thrilling experience and you can stop at one of the many viewpoints.

Ulcinj is a famous multi-ethnic and tourist town in the South of Montenegro. According to historical data Ulcinj is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic coast. It is thought that Ulcinj is more than 2.000 years old. In this area for centuries the cultures of Orient and the West collided.

Ulcinj, as the southernmost city at the Montenegrin coast, is also the owner of the longest beach at the Adriatic Sea. This is the Long Beach or Velika Plaza which is 14km long. Other beautiful and very popular beaches in Ulcinj are Ada Bojana (a unique river island with marvellous sandy beaches), Valdanos (a bay with old olive trees along the coast), Short Beach or Mala Plaza in the centre and many more.

The Old Town – Kalaja - in Ulcinj is one of the most beautiful old towns worldwide. It is newly recovered and surely worth visiting. In this part of the city you can find a lot of cafes, hotels and restaurants.

In Ulcinj you can find a lot of religious objects, like mosques and churches. The most important of them are the Sailor Mosque, Namazgjahu Mosque, Pasha´s Mosque, Kryepazari Mosque, church-mosque St. Maria, Church St. Nicholas, St. Joseph Church, St. George Church and few others.
