THE SAFEST WAY TO LOOK AT NORTH KOREA IS FROM CHINA AND THE YALU RIVER
Despite our apprehensions as Americans, we rolled the dice on a tour of the North Korea coastline on the Yalu River. It ended up being a great experience. We got to see real life in North Korea. We got the boat ride in Dandong, China for 50 CNY.

Quanzhou Travel Guide | Southwest China Landscape
Quanzhou, alternatively known as Chinchew, is a prefecture-level port city on the north bank of the Jin River, beside the Taiwan Strait in Fujian Province, People's Republic of China. It is Fujian's largest metropolitan region, with an area of 11,245 square kilometres (4,342 sq mi) and, as of 2010, a population of 8,128,530. Its built-up area is home to 6,107,475 inhabitants, encompassing the Licheng, Fengze, and Luojiang urban districts; Jinjiang, Nan'an, and Shishi cities; Hui'an County; and the Quanzhou District for Taiwanese Investment. Quanzhou was China's 12th-largest extended metropolitan area in 2010.

Dandong: Exploring North Korea From The Yalu River
The Yalu river (Known in Korean is Amonkgang) runs 790km along along the border of China and North Korea. In both Chinese and Korean its name means “duck green,” which refers to the color of the river. Visitors to the Yalu are often struck by the fact that China and North Korea are only a few meters from each other in some places along the river.
In the early years of both the PRC and DPRK, North Korea was perhaps the most industrialized country in East Asia, owed in part to heavy industrialization by Japan during its occupation of Korea (1910-1945), as well as heavy Soviet investment and subsidies after 1945. At that time, the North Korean side of the river was the more developed and it was common for ethnic Koreans living in China to return to North Korea for better living conditions.
Since the 1970s, however, the Chinese side of the Yalu has seen tremendous growth. Today, the Chinese border city of Dandong is bustling with traffic and construction whereas the opposite North Korean city, Sinuiju, remains – shall we say – unspoiled by bourgeoisie and capitalist ideologies.
As we covered in our last video on the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and Broken Bridge, Dandong is a popular destination for tourists wanting a closer look at China's enigmatic neighbor. Along the river near the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, there are a number of companies offering boat tours which will can bring you a little nearer to the North Korean side of the river where one can see details about the daily lives of Koreans. In this video, we decided to check out one of the Chinese-North Korea Boat Tours ourselves and to take you along for the ride.

Trip to China - North Korea - Russia border - Changbai mountains & Heavenly Lake
A trip to China-North Korea-Russia 3 country border scenic area and beautiful mountains of Changbai and Tianqi Heavenly lake. TianChi Lake is 13 km in circumference but cannot be walked around owing to the border with North Korea. The border with North Korea is not clearly marked and there have been arrests by North Korean border guards of foreigners. The terrestrial boundary between Russia and North Korea runs along the fairway of the Tumen River and its estuary, while the maritime boundary separates the two countries' territorial waters in the Sea of Japan. The principal border treaty was signed on April 17, 1985. A separate, trilateral treaty specifies the position of the tripoint of the borders of Russia, North Korea, and China. Because the theoretical tripoint is in the middle of the river, where it would be impractical to install a border monument, the agreement provides instead that the three countries install border monuments on the riverbank, and that the position of the tripoint be determined with respect to those monuments. The Hidden Korean Region in China | Yanji City - The Korean Enclave in China (延吉市)
I took a trip to a part of China that very few people know about - a 'Korean' part of China up in the northeast - a region called the 'Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture' (延边朝鲜族自治州, Yánbiān Cháoxiǎnzú Zìzhìzhōu) in eastern Jilin Province, right on the North Korean border.
As a person who has traveled extensively throughout China, I can easily notice a different atmosphere when walking through the streets of Yanji City (the capital of this Korean Automous Zone).
When you walk down the street, you'll hear locals chatting in Korean (they use the 'Hamgyong dialent' which is quite different to what is spoken in South Korea) and you'll see signs for Korean foods everywhere. Lengmian (cold noodles), kimchii, rice sausage, etc.
In this video, I show you around Yanji City and give some personal feelings and insights about the area.

Today in Chicago, I had the pleasure to meet a young North Korean girl named Evelyn. 6 years ago, when she was 15 years Evelyn, she escaped North Korea with her mother for a better life. Both without passports, they spent 1 month traveling by foot across China, Laos and Thailand - where the South Korean government officially recognized her as a refugee and she was granted permission to migrate to the United States of America.
In this eye-opening interview, Evelyn tells me her escape story and how she has managed to integrate so well into American society. She lives all by herself and just bought her first car (with her hard-earned income!).

Tumen City: Where China and North Korea meet | 吉林省, 延边的图们市
In this travel vlog we take a journey up to a lesser known area of China within the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture region which shares a border with North Korea.
We take a trip up to Tumen City, Jilin Province (吉林省，图们市) and literally touch the edge of North Korea (Namyang City, DPRK, to be specific). We try some of the local foods and take in the sights as well as the overall atmosphere of this border city.

On a moon lit sky, River Tumen was gorgeous. In order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of modernity of Yanchi, the river banks were decorated with lights and a special water fountain was constructed. This was not the same place in September when I visited Yanchi. Development in China id phenomenal.
