Jaunmoku Castle was built in 1901 as a summer residence for the mayor of Riga, George Armistead. It combines two types of architecture: Neo-Gothics and Art Nouveau.
During the wars of the 20th century, the castle was exploited as a military school, radio station and hospital. In the 70s, the castle was abandoned and took about 10 years to renovate.
Nowadays, one can find here a centennial tiled stove with images of Riga and Jurmala from the beginning of the 20th century, a forest museum and a historical exposition in the observation tower as well as a hotel and a restaurant.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE Latvian countryside is an unusual structure bound to pique the curiosity of anyone who happens upon it. The “Tilts uz nekurieni,” or “Bridge to Nowhere,” is a narrow-gauge railway bridge leading nowhere at all, surrounded on both ends by nothing but a lush green meadow.
The concrete span across the Abava River, just 180 feet long (55 meters), was built in 1940, intended to be part of the new Tukums-Kuldiga rail line that was under construction. It was one of a number of ambitious projects planned by the newly independent and quickly developing republic of Latvia. Then World War II broke out.

Classy Durbes Castle! Located in ???????? Tukums, Latvia

Durbe Manoris one of the most interesting castles of classicism style in Kurzeme. It was built in the year 1671 and has been reconstructed on several occasions. The castle obtained its current appearance in the period from 1820–1923 according to the reconstructions designed by the architect J.G.A.Berlitz.

You can go for a lovely walk on a steaming summer day or when the leaves turn colourful in autumn in the scenic park with architectural monuments – a rotunda and a stone bridge over the ravine – which was created next to the castle at the beginning of the 19th century.

At this time, the renovated exhibition halls the 1st floor of the manor offers expositions of the interior of countryside manors, however the 2nd floor halls offers various expositions about manors in the 19th century.

Is it worth visiting small towns in Europe? In this Budget Travel Vlog, we take a train from Riga to Sigulda, Latvia. The train took about an hour and cost less than $4 per person! Making this one of the best ways to get around Europe on a budget.

The first thing to do when arriving in a new city is to go to a local cafe. We ate breakfast at a local bakery and each ordered a pastry, which came out to less than $5. The food in the Baltics and Latvia is affordable.

We tried to visit the Sigulda bobsleigh track, one of the unique attractions in this small town in Europe. Unfortunately, it was closed for the next couple of hours. Instead, we visited Gauja National Park in Sigulda and took a cable car ride across the valley. Hiking in Gauja National Park in the winter is a unique sight to see in Europe. After Crossing Gauja National park’s snowy landscape and we eventually made it to Gutmanis Cave, which is the largest cave in the Baltics.

One of the highlights was visiting the Sigulda bobsleigh track, it cost us less than $15 per person and it was one of the more memorable activities we’ve done in Latvia! The bobsleigh track was built in 1986 and is one of the only bobsleigh tracks open to pros and tourists!

6 Things NOT To Do in Latvia!

Latvia is a small country with a population of less than two million. While people are generally relaxed and tranquil there are some things which will offend. Here are 6 Things Not To Do in Latvia!

1. Don’t mention the Russians!
Latvia has a complex relationship with Russia. Many Latvians feel the Russians don’t accept them as their own independent country and many Russians living there don,t feel accepted as Latvians. Neither like an ignorant tourist voicing their opinion about it!

2. Don’t ignore their language!
The Latvian language was suppressed during the Russian occupation so try to learn some simple words.

Ardievas (goodbye)
Paldies (thanks).
They know they’re never going to be a global language but they really appreciate you trying.

3. Don’t avoid the local dishes!
Latvians are proud of their culture and cuisine. Try the local dishes and beverages and give your opinion, especially if you like them. From fried garlic bread to fresh fruit jams, Latvia has a varied cuisine with excellent domestic beers.

4. Don’t be aggressive (unless you’re driving!)
Latvians generally have a calm and “each to his own” lookout on life so don’t be brash or too bold, unless you’re behind the wheel, then it really is each to his own!

5. Don’t turn up empty-handed!
If you get invited to someone’s house always bring an odd number of flowers, an even number is associated with death, some food or beverages
and remember to take your shoes off just inside the door.

6. Don’t disrespect nature!
Half of Latvia is still virgin forest. Most Latvians are nature lovers and still follow many pagan traditions. They will show you how to make crowns from flowers and tea from the local herbs. Join in respectfully and they will appreciate it.

Already in 1869 Baltic German researcher A. Bielenstein indicated that the Tukums cemetary Hill (Kirchhofsberg) is to be considered the shrine of the nearby Tukums Hillfort. The hill and its individual parts have been described by different names over the time: Kapsētas (Cemetary), Kapellas (Chapel), Kapličas (Mortuary), Karātavu (Gallows) kalns (Hill), Lielais kalns (Big Hill) etc. The hill is situated in the W part of Tukums town, it is detached, oriented in the N –S direction, almost 1 km long – a distinct hill which has since long been used as a punishment and burial site. The hill is divided into two parts with a belt. Recently both sides of the hill in the belt were slightly pushed down; no traces of the cultural layer were found. The smaller N part of the hill is the so-called German Cemetary. This is the old cemetary of Tukums town which is now used just partly, however is looked after and maintained. The surface of the hill has been flattened. From here there is a view to the Tukums Hillfort, which lies almost half a kilometre westwards. To the S from the belt there is the biggest part of the hill where the Kalns Cemetary currently used by Tukums inhabitants has been arranged. This part of the cemetary has several elevations and from the hill the Tukums Hillfort can be viewed on one side as well as Tukums town centre with the church spire on the other side. There are legends on the Devil’s activities related to the hill. The situation that there are shrines close to the respective hillforts is rather common in Kurzeme and it is possible that also Tukums Cemetary Hill has once been the shrine of the Tukums Hillfort. The big size of the hill and its later modification – the cemetary arrangement and exploitation does not allow for more precise localization of the ancient shrine.
