Bottomless Otjikoto Lake near Tsumeb in Namibia, southern Africa

Video of Otjikoto Lake, located in Namibia, 20 km from Tsumeb, in southern Africa.

#Lake #Namibia #SafariAfrica

Otjikoto Lake:

Otjikoto Lake is the smaller of only two permanent natural lakes in Namibia. It is a sinkhole lake that was created by a collapsing karst cave.It is located 20 kilometres north-west of Tsumeb and only 100 meters from the main road B1. The lake was declared a national monument in 1972.

The diameter of the lake is 102 metres, its depth is supposedly a maximum of 91.44 meters plus according to scans. According to a Namibian tourism information organisation, the depth varies from 62 meters at the side to 100 meters in the center, and in some places leading off from the side depths of 100 meters have been recorded, while an article in the Allgemeine Zeitung explains the depth problem: the lake tapers into a lateral cave system making it impossible to determine its exact depth, estimated to be in access of 142 meters.

The lake was known to the San under the name Gaisis (ugly). When the Herero moved into the area, they named it Otjikoto (Otjiherero: deep hole). Namibia's Oshikoto Region, in which the lake is situated, is an alternative spelling of Otjikoto and derives its name from that of the lake. The first Europeans to discover the lake were Francis Galton and Carl Johan Andersson, who during their search for Lake Ngami came upon Otjikoto Lake in 1851.

The lake was a dumping ground for German Schutztruppe during World War I, in June 1915 German troops dumped war materials in the lake before surrendering to stop the South African and British troops from using them. Most of the larger pieces have been recovered and are displayed in Tsumeb Museum, but at least two cannons, along with quantities of ammunition, are still in the lake and can be viewed with a special diving permit. According to legend, the Germans also dumped a sealed safe into the lake. The search for it and the 6 million gold marks it is said to contain has as yet not been successful.

Botanist Kurt Dinter visited the lake in 1911 and collected several hitherto unknown species of plants, among them grass of the genus Rottboellia. Tilapia guinasana, a species of cichlid fish which naturally was only found in Otjikoto's sister lake, Lake Guinas, was introduced to Otjikoto Lake. The claim that Lake Guinas is connected to Lake Otjikoto by caves is frequently made but not proven as yet.

SWAKOPMUND, NAMIBIA: Africa's MOST BEAUTIFUL Town? Travel Guide to ALL SIGHTS

Welcome to Namibia! And welcome to part 3 of an incredible road trip through one of the least populated countries in the world. This country about 1,5 time the size of France mainly consists of desert landscape. In the previous two episodes we traveled along the coast of South Africa from Cape Town, to visit the first highlight of the country and the absolute number one sight: the Sossusvlei. After that we drove through no man's land to the industrial port city of Walvis Bay. We spotted flamingoes crossing the dunes in the endless desert and visited pink salt lakes.

In this episode we continue the drive along the coast to another tourist hot spot on the ocean shore. The town of Swakopmund is the most beautiful preserved colonial town, with a lot of German influences. The architecture is outstanding, but Swakopmund has more to offer. It's the beating heart of Namibian culture. We also visit the National Marine Aquarium, some shipwrecks on the so called Skeleton Coast and thousands of seals at Cape Cross. Up next will be Etosha National Park for some safari drives.

Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines. Zanzibar and Tanzania are already destination number 21 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for a year. Follow us on this world tour, first in Tanzania, from Zanzibar to the safari parks on the mainland and then to many more beautiful destinations in Africa! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

Namibia, Otjikoto Lake

in the middle of nowhere - or as locals would say, about 10km north west of the town of Tsumeb in northern Namibia ;-)

EXPLORING USAKOS TOWN IN ERONGO REGION OF CENTRAL NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Usakos is the last town on B2 highway from Windhoek to the west coast of Namibia and resort town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay deep sea harbor.

#Usakos #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Usakos:

Usakos (Damara: grab the heel, Otjiherero name: Okanduu) is a city on the banks of river Khan, 140 kilometres north-east of Swakopmund in the Erongo Region of Namibia. It is located on the B2 (Trans-Kalahari Highway), the main road between the Walvis Bay and Johannesburg. The town has 3,000 inhabitants and owns 58 square kilometres of land. Usakos was scheduled to be downgraded to town status before November 2010.

The settlement was founded in 1900 as a watering station for locomotives when railway construction workers from Otavi Minen- und Eisenbahngesellschaft (Otavi Mining and Railway Company) (OMEG) arrived here on their way from Swakopmund to Tsumeb. Surrounded by mountains, Usakos is quite picturesque. Certain spots around the town show the longest uninterrupted horizon in the world. It is the closest town to the Spitzkoppe, often referred to as the Matterhorn of Namibia.

Development and infrastructure
Usakos is the junction of the branch railways to Tsumeb and the Angolan border, Outjo and Grootfontein from the line to Windhoek.

Politics
Local authority results, 2010
In the 2010 local authority election, a total of 1,029 votes were cast in the city. SWAPO won with approximately 47% of the vote. Of the three other parties seeking votes in the election, UDF received approximately 31% of the vote, followed by RDP (17%) and COD (4%).

Notable residents
Usakos is the hometown of prominent politicians Alpheus !Naruseb and Tsudao Gurirab. Michael Goreseb represented the town politically as well.
The first town in the east of the Namib Desert on the main B2 road from Swakopmund, Usakos lies on the southern bank of the Khan River, nestled in the last hills before the Namib, at the edge of a vast expanse of gravel plains. The town originally developed around the railway workshops which were built to service the narrow-gauge Otavi line, completed in 1906. Unit 1960, the town prospered. Nowadays the town's main role is one of service centre to vehicles plying their way to and from Swakopmund / Walvis Bay and Windhoek. As a reminder of the town's heyday, Locomotive No. 40 stands in front of the railway station, one of three Henschel steam trains built in Germany for her colony's narrow-gauge railway.

Video lists and shows major sights and attractions in and near Atlantic coast resort town of Swakopmund in Namibia, southern Africa. Part 1 of 4. The town is rich in history and is one of the main attractions of the country.

Swakopmund is located in the Namib Desert and boasts to be an adventure centre of Namibia. The town also has plenty of places of interest and sights in and near it as well as offers a lot of tours and adventure activities run by local tour operators.

Swakopmund is a beach resort and an example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa. As of the 1970s, German influences remained evident, including German street names, a German daily newspaper, and the German language being spoken by some residents, prompting The New York Times to describe it as more German than Germany. A 2008 New York Times article describes the town as having the dislocating feel of a Baltic Sea resort set in the tropics.

Prominent colonial-time vintage buildings in Swakopmund include the Altes Gefängnis, a prison designed by Heinrich Bause in 1909. The Woermann Haus, built in 1906 with a prominent tower (Damara tower), is now a public library, Kaserne, Prinzessin Rupprecht Residenz - now a small B&B establishment, Hohenzollern House, Swakopmund Hotel (1900s-built railway station), 1905 Hansa Hotel, 1899 Fachwerk Biergarten, Villa Wille, German school, Otavi Bahnhof building, a Lutheran Church and many other fine buildings.

Other attractions in Swakopmund include a Swakopmund Museum, the National Marine Aquarium, Crystal Gallery, and spectacular sand dunes near Langstrand south of the Swakop River. Outside the city, the Rossmund Desert Golf Course is one of only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world. Nearby is a farm that offers camel rides to tourists and the Martin Luther steam locomotive, dating from 1896 and abandoned in the desert due to breakdown.

My trip to Namibia :D
