Canal du Midi - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Canal du Midi is an incredible infrastructure project, dating from the 17th century. It was part of a colossal effort to connect France's Atlantic coast with the Mediterranean coast, to speed up shipping and avoid a dangerous sea voyage around Spain. Although the dream was never fully realised, this 200km stretch between Toulouse and the Mediterranean coast is still intact, and stands as a testament to the ambition of its builders.

France: Le Pont Canal de Digion

The Digoin Canal Bridge is a canal bridge that allows the Canal Latéral à la Loire to cross the Loire. It allows the side channel to connect a little further with the channel of the Center (Canal du Centre), at the Campionnet port in Digoin. It ends with a lock from which it is separated by a short crossing basin. Only boats or pedestrians have access.

It is one of the first major canal-bridges in France, with 243 meters long. It is the engineer Pierre-Alexandre-Adophe Jullien then aged only 29, who is the author, as well as that of Guétin, under the direction of the engineer-in-chief Jean Joseph Pierre Vigoureux.

Opened to navigation in 1838, at the same time as the canal1, it was expanded in 1870 and it was rebuilt between 1890 and 1896 by the engineer Léonce-Abel Mazoyer as part of the Freycinet channel gauge. It was thus deepened by raising its crowning.

Specifications
- Eleven arches having 16 meters opening.
- Ten pillars 9 meters thick at the base of the vaults.
- The pillars are anchored at a depth of 3 meters below the low waters of the Loire.
- The bottom of the canal is located 8.30 meters above the Loire.
- The canal is 6 meters wide and 2.30 meters deep.
- Haul road 1.75 meters wide on each side of the canal.

Places to see in ( Narbonne - France ) Canal de la Robine

Places to see in ( Narbonne - France ) Canal de la Robine

Classed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Canal de la Robine is the main thoroughfare which gives the town its heartbeat. La Robine takes its name from the Occitan word Roubine which means Canal. Part of its route lies in what was once the riverbed of the Aude, called the Atax in ancient times and whose course was diverted after a series of floods in the 14th century.

In 1681, the Canal du Midi opened for business but it took another hundred years before the Robine was connected up to this major waterway by the Junction Canal. 32 km (20 miles) long, la Robine stretches from the Junction Canal, which links it to the Canal du Midi, all the way to the sea near the protected island of Sainte Lucie, passing straight through Narbonne on the way.

Lovers of calm waters can rent electric boats. Some may prefer the wonderfully tended banks of the canal in the shade of the centenary plane trees, for a delightful walk or bike ride. La Robine accommodates pleasure craft all year round along 2.5 km of moorings split into four quays

The Central Quay (Quai des Barques), in the heart of town, reserved for short stays.

Places to see in ( Narbonne - France ) Horreum romain

Places to see in ( Narbonne - France ) Horreum romain

These underground galleries from the 1st century before our era consist of a network of corridors leading to a series of small rooms. They were originally underneath a building that has since disappeared, probably a market or a public warehouse (Horreum in Latin). The walls, very well preserved, are evidence of the general architectural expertise and know-how of the ancient Romans. It is the only ancient monument that still remains at Narbonne.

The Horreum is the only building dating from classical times that can still be seen in Narbonne. It is a former underground warehouse and dates from the end of the first century BC and was probably the below-ground section of a market. Two of its galleries can be visited and the sound and light show that has been installed creates an atmosphere rather like that of a market-day.

Stone remains have been put on display in the alcoves that open off the north wing to remind visitors of the splendours of Narbo Martius, the capital of the Narbonne region. You can buy a Pass Ticket, which is valid for 15 days and gives you entry to all the monuments and museums.

The Horreum romain, recognized as a museum in 1975 during its opening to the public is the only metropolitan example of Gallo-Roman underground warehouses of goods preserved almost in its entirety.

Its construction dates back to the 1st Century before J.C., and corresponds to a time when Narbonne was considered as an observatory and rampart of the Romans (Cicéron). It served as a warehouse for grain, wine and oil, and also to stock weapon because of the military importance of the city at this time.

****************

Canal du midi - the wordwide unique 9 locks of Fonseranes near Beziers France in 4k

In this film I show you the worldwide unique 9 locks of Fonseranes on the Canal du midi near Beziers from the 17th century which were planned and built by Pierre-Paul Riquet, the builder of the complete Canal du midi. The staircase of locks in the Canal du Midi is the most visited sight in Beziers and is classified as Monument historique. Today, 6 chambers are still in use one after the other and overcome a height of 13.6m. Passing the locks takes a little longer than an hour and is for every houseboat fan the crowning glory of the vacation, you feel a bit chosen when you maneuver your houseboat through the locks in front of all the tourists at the edge behind the barrier.

The remaining chambers were no longer needed because in the 19th century it was decided to build a water bridge for the Canal du midi over the Orb because it had a very irregular water level. You can also see this bridge in this video. On the drone footage you can also see a strange construction right below the locks - this is a ship lift that was built in 1983 for the larger cargo ships. However, because of its susceptibility to errors and because of the discontinuation of cargo shipping on the Canal du Midi, the water wedge lift was taken out of operation in 2001. I could not get closer with the drone because the whole region in front of the drone is a no-fly zone.

The Canal du midi - with a length of 240km it connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean Sea at Sète and was completed in 1681. It brought progress and the way to modernity to the region and was important for the transport of people and goods until the end of the 20th century. At peak times, 110 million ton kilometers of goods were transported.

A technical masterpiece that the master builder Pierre-Paul Riquet had built here with many obstacles and problems after the French King Louis XIV had approved the project in 1666. With its 98 lock basins the canal overcomes

Together with the Canal de Garonne, it provides a navigable link from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, avoiding the arduous journey around the Iberian Peninsula. Already the Romans thought about building a canal, in the Middle Ages even Leonardo da Vinci was involved in the planning work, but they failed to supply the canal with water.
