Lille! Getting to know this fantastic city in northern France!

Lille is a fantastic place and I really enjoyed getting to know this part of northern France. In this video I go to the Wazemmes, the Palais de Beaux Arts and the beautiful train station. The city has very much its own feel and culture, being situated so close to the boarder with Belgium. It was a real treat getting to know this city and all of the incredible culture that it has to offer.

Things to do in Lille in France!

Here is our Top 10, enjoy!

Lille is a city located in northern France, near the border with Belgium. It is the capital of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region and is known for its rich history, culture, and architecture. Lille has a population of around 230,000 people, and it is one of the most important economic, cultural, and educational centers in the region. In this essay, we will explore the history, culture, economy, and attractions of Lille in detail.

History:

Lille has a long and complex history that dates back to the Roman era. The city was originally called L'Isle, which means the island in French, because it was located on an island in the Deûle River. Over time, Lille grew into an important trading center, and it became a key part of the textile industry in the 16th and 17th centuries.

During the 18th century, Lille underwent a period of modernization and expansion. The city was occupied by the Austrians during the War of the Spanish Succession, and it was later annexed by the French in 1667. Lille became the capital of the Nord department in 1790, and it played an important role in the French Revolution.

During World War I, Lille was occupied by the Germans, and the city suffered extensive damage. However, it was rebuilt after the war, and it continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century.

Culture:

Lille is known for its rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in its architecture, music, and art. The city is home to many museums, galleries, and cultural institutions, including the Palais des Beaux-Arts, which is one of the largest art museums in France.

One of the most famous cultural events in Lille is the Braderie de Lille, which is an annual flea market that takes place in September. The market attracts millions of visitors from around the world, and it features a wide range of antiques, food, and entertainment.

Lille is also known for its architecture, which combines elements of traditional French design with modern influences. Some of the most famous buildings in Lille include the Palais Rihour, the Old Stock Exchange, and the Hospice Comtesse.

Economy:

Lille has a diverse and thriving economy that is driven by a range of industries, including manufacturing, technology, and services. The city is home to many international companies, such as Auchan, Leroy Merlin, and Decathlon.

The city is also known for its trade fairs, which attract thousands of visitors from around the world each year. Some of the most popular trade fairs in Lille include the International Agricultural Show, the International Motor Show, and the International Tourism Fair.

Paris - City Video Guide

On the banks of the river Seine in northern France, Paris attracts 42 million visitors a year, making it the most visited city in the world.

Beginning at the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées runs along the Historic Axis. This grand avenue is where Parisians come to eat, drink, shop, enjoy the theater and celebrate life. It merges into the largest square in Paris, the Place de la Concorde.

A short stroll away is the world's most visited museum, the Musée du Louvre, and modern art at the Centre Pompidou. The neighborhood of Montmartre, with its winding streets, was once home to Picasso, Dali and Van Gogh

There's no more famous Parisian icon than the Eiffel Tower, which can be seen from all over the city. Other unmissable landmarks include the Notre Dame Cathedral and gleaming white Sacré-Cœur Basilica.

The city's many attractions are never far apart, and in between visitors can enjoy a serene stroll through picture-postcard streets of Paris.

Places to see in ( Lille - France ) Lille Streets

Places to see in ( Lille - France ) Lille Streets

The streets of the North may have created the famous Paris-Roubaix road race, but it’s something gentler that awaits you in ‘Le Vieux-Lille’. It is a great way to explore the streets, squares and alleyways which create the charm of the city today. Peddling against the wind, you pass an uninterrupted succession of magnificent 17th and 18th century façades and prestigious brands from ‘La Rue Grand Chaussée’ to ‘La Rue de la Monnaie’. Two stops are essential: one by ‘l'Huîtrière’ (a stunning Art Deco building), and the other by the‘Hospice Comtesse’. This is one of the most beautiful places in Lille. Go down past the weaver’s cottages in‘La rue Pétérinck’ until you reach the small ‘Place aux Oignons’ - which you will love. Visit ‘La Treille’. You will like the colourful houses with their wooden bridges.

You can explore all the small streets of the ‘La Treille’ district, such as ‘La Rue Doudin’, ‘La Rue Jean Jacques Rousseau’ and the narrow ‘Rue Coquerez’. Then cross ‘La Rue Royale’ with all its individual hotels to explore Sainte Catherine church square - a charming place. Traces of the old canal network are not far away. The water which flowed through the old town can still be seen in the architecture today and is remembered in evocative names. Take the magnificent, narrow ‘Rue de la Halloterie’ which is not that easy to spot. Follow ‘Rue de la Baignerie’ and turn into ‘Rue du Quai’. You will arrive in ‘Les Quais de Wault’. This is a place from another time that evokes an old Lille when barges would have moored here at your feet. One turn of the pedals and you arrive at the citadel.

The citadel is a perfect place for cycling. Cycle paths and tree-lined avenues make touring by bike very pleasant. There is no better way to explore the defences designed by Vaubin and to enjoy this beautiful, natural area. You will not disturb the herons beside the water, or the Soay sheep on top of the ramparts. And if two large horns appear over the tall grass - don’t worry. It’s only an impressive, but gentle, Irish bull naturally maintaining the green surroundings. This is a place not to be missed, where you can cycle beside the water along the shaded Mathias Delobel avenue. Go over Ory bridge and follow the ‘Le Bois’ path. You will come to the picturesque ‘Quai Géry Legrand’ with its moored barges.

Go down the ‘Bd de la Liberté’ admiring the ‘Place de la République’ and the Fine Arts Museum in passing. ‘La Porte’ and ‘Rue de Paris’ are at the end where all the unmissable landmarks in Lille are located (the belfry, ‘l'Hospice Gantois’, ‘La Noble Tour’.). The ‘Bd Jean Baptiste Lebas’ and its central park is nearby. Cycle along the ‘Wazemmes’ and ‘Moulins’ districts, which have kept their popular vibe, by following the boulevards ‘Victor Hugo’ and ‘Montebello’. There is so much evidence of the philanthropic city to explore - the last ‘courées’ (workers’ houses), markets, etc. Finally, on the last leg, the ‘Boulevard Vauban’ and the amazing Catholic University - a vision of Oxford or of Hogwarts - it’s up to you! Last stop, the beautiful ‘Jardin Vauban’ before returning to the citadel.

( Lille - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Lille . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Lille - France

Buy me a cup of coffee:

At under 1 hr 30 mins from London by train, 230 km from Paris, 110 km from Brussels, Lille is the perfect place to visit for a day trip or a short break. You can spend the morning shopping in the old town, drop into Meert for coffee and waffles, have a hearty plate of Moules Frites (mussels and chips) for lunch, then pop into the massive Carrefour hypermarket, next to the station, to stock up on fabulous French produce, and still be home in time for dinner and your favorite soap.

There’s plenty to do in Lille for longer stays too. Culturally, Lille has lots to offer, with its Gothic churches, 17th-century old town, and the largest fine-arts museum in France after the Louvre, all within easy walking distance of the station.

Lille is also home to the biggest flea market in Europe, which takes place throughout the town over the first weekend in September. The Braderie de Lille attracts over two million visitors every year, so make sure you book well in advance if you fancy browsing the stands for undiscovered masterpieces and future family heirlooms.
