Torpoint is a civil parish and town on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated opposite the city of Plymouth across the Hamoaze which is the tidal estuary of the River Tamar.
Torpoint is linked to Plymouth (and Devonport) by the Torpoint Ferry. The three vessels that operate the service are chain ferries – that is, they are propelled across the river by pulling themselves on fixed chains which lie across the bed of the river. The journey takes about seven minutes.
It is said that Torpoint's name is derived from Tar Point, a name given because of the initial industry on the west bank of the Hamoaze. However this is actually a nickname given by workers, Torpoint meaning rocky headland. Torpoint is an eighteenth-century planned town. The grid-based design for the town was commissioned by Reginald Pole Carew in the Parish of Antony in 1774. His family continue to have a strong influence in the area, having become the Carew Poles in the twentieth century, and still reside at their family seat, Antony House.
In 1796 Torpoint was the setting for a shooting battle between the crew of a government vessel, the Viper, and a large party of armed liquor smugglers, in which one person was killed and five people seriously wounded. Torpoint has a Non-League football club Torpoint Athletic F.C. who play at The Mill.

Torpoint Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cornwall, and directly opposite Plymouth on the west bank of the River Tamar, is the town of Torpoint (or Penntorr in Cornish).
The first recorded mention of Torpoint dates from 1734. It developed as a planned town with a grid-based street layout due to its role as a naval maintenance base and ferry point on the River Tamar.
Torpoint's growth was fuelled by the demand for workers at Plymouth Royal Dockyard, or HMNB Devonport as it is known today. Housing in Plymouth close to the River Tamar was limited at the time, thus a settlement on the west bank of the river was seen as a practical solution. Other sources of work in the area became available, including lime kilns, a wharf, a warehouse and a quay.
In 1791 the first regular ferry service across the River Tamar was introduced. Initially these were either rowed or sailed across. This changed in the 1830s when engineer James Meadows Rendel introduced a steam-powered chain ferry crossing, i.e. where chains secured on both ends of the river link up to the boat to guide it across. This is also referred to as a floating bridge. Regular ferry services run between Torpoint and the Devonport suburb of Plymouth to this day. These are free to use for pedestrians and cyclists, and a toll applies to motor vehicles.
In 1897 James Benjamin Ellis, a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy from Torpoint responded to a cry for help when four boys had got into difficulties whilst swimming. Ellis ran to the water and swam to their aid. Two boys managed to get to safety and Ellis held onto the other two. A passing boat picked up the two boys but Ellis drowned. A monument was placed in his memory at the intersection of Fore Street, Harvey Street and Antony Road, which stands to this day.

Riding the Torpoint Ferry to Plymouth | Full Crossing【4K】
The city of Plymouth and the town of Torpoint are separated by the River Tamar which, for most of its length, defines the boundary between Devon to the east and Cornwall to the west.
The town of Torpoint grew as a planned settlement in the 18th century in response to demand for housing close to Plymouth Royal Dockyard, or HMNB Devonport as it is known today. The first regular ferry service started in 1791, where ships were either rowed or sailed across. Then, in the 1830s, engineer James Meadows Rendel introduced a steam-powered chain ferry crossing, sometimes referred to as a floating bridge. This is where the boat is guided across the river by chains secured on both banks.
To this day, regular ferry services operate between Torpoint and the Devonport suburb of Plymouth. A toll applies to motor vehicles, but for pedestrians and cyclists it is free to use. This video demonstrates a crossing in real time, taking just over five minutes.

Saltash is a town and civil parish in southeast Cornwall, England, UK. Saltash lies in the south east of Cornwall, facing Plymouth over the River Tamar. It was in the Caradon district until March 2009 and is known as the Gateway to Cornwall. Saltash means ash tree by the salt mill. Saltash is the largest town within the East Cornwall area and is one of the largest in Cornwall.
Saltash is the location of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge, opened by HRH Prince Albert on 2 May 1859. It takes the railway line across the River Tamar. Alongside it is the Tamar Bridge, a toll bridge carrying the A38 trunk road, which in 2001 became the first suspension bridge to be widened whilst remaining open to traffic.
Saltash railway station is close to the town centre. It was hoped that the empty buildings could be restored as a visitor centre for the bridge, but they have instead been purchased by a property developer. The station is served by a regular train service, with some direct High Speed services to and from London Paddington.
Stagecoach South West, Plymouth Citybus, and Go Cornwall Bus operate bus services from Saltash, into Plymouth city centre, Launceston, Liskeard, Looe, and Polperro. The cottage of Mary Newman, Sir Francis Drake's first wife, can be found in Saltash on Culver Road downhill from Saltash railway station.
Nearby are the castles at Trematon and Ince, as well as the nature reserve at Churchtown Farm, where there are some wonderful walks, with stunning views of the river. Burrell House near Saltash was built in 1621 and has a wing dated 1636. The entrance side was altered in the 18th century.
The history of Saltash is linked to the passage, or ferrying place across the Tamar. The original ferry became established by fishermen for those passing to and from the monastery at St Germans and to Trematon Castle. After the Norman Conquest, Robert, Count of Mortain, who held the castle and manor at Trematon, took the market from the canons at St. Germans and established it at Saltash.
The Antony Passage Ferry, which is mentioned in documents as early as 1324, was situated within the St Stephens suburb of Saltash civil parish. The ferry belonged to the Daunay family in the 14th Century, in 1450 it passed to the Carew family, and by the end of the 18th century it was taken over by the Crosley family, who operated the ferry for several generations, until it fell into disuse in the early 1950s. The route linked Jupiter Point (part of the Antony Estate), Antony Passage and Passage Point (both part of Saltash).
Saltash hosts a number of annual festivals: Saltash Mayfair takes place in and around Fore Street during early May, and Saltash Town Regatta brings music and entertainment to the Waterside area in the summer. On the water there are intense Gig races with the best teams taking part, along with Flashboat rowing and dinghy racing, and the now infamous 'England and back' race between local organisations. For 2008 a new five towns challenge has been added to the list of events, pitting Saltash against Liskeard, Callington, Looe and Torpoint. Ashore you will find many stalls, music and marquees. Torpoint 20 mile Circular Walk (South West Coast Path South Cornwall)
Trev sets off to the South West Coast Path for a 20 mile Circular walk in the Torpoint area of South Cornwall - one last training hike before he attempts to walk Dartmoor in a Day.
Walking alongside Pymouth Sound, Trev's walk has skipped a few miles of coast but was a great location to get in another circular walk. Parking inland at Millbrook, he follows the estuary out to Cremyll, and then follows the South West Coast Path past the luscious and historical grounds of Mount Edgecumbe, the quaint fishing village of Cawsand, the ancient chapel on the summit of Rame Head, and the cliffs above Whitsand Bay.

Kingsand and Cawsand are twin villages in southeast Cornwall, United Kingdom. The villages are situated on the Rame Peninsula and in the parish of Maker-with-Rame. Until boundary changes in 1844 Kingsand was in Devon; Cawsand, however, was always in Cornwall. On the old county boundary between the two villages there is still a house called Devon Corn, which has the marker on the front of the house. The villages are popular with tourists but retain their traditional character.
The villages are well known for their smuggling and fishing past. Although the known smuggling tunnels have been sealed up, there are still old fish cellars and boat stores to be seen along the coast.
One notable former resident was John Pollard RN. He was a midshipman (later a Commander) in the Navy who served under Nelson and is the man credited with being Nelson's avenger, since it was he who shot the French sailor who killed the Admiral. Nelson himself has also been said to have visited the village and dined at The Ship Inn (now closed). Other notable residents have included Tabitha Ransome (Arthur Ransome's daughter) and also Ann Davison who was to become the first woman to sail the Atlantic single handed in 1953 and departing from Mashfords boatyard.
Kingsand lies on the shores of Cawsand Bay, with the South West Coast Path running through the village. The village coast, as well as the coast 1 km to the east forms the Kingsand to Sandway Point SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), which shows examples of extensive early Permian volcanicity. The South West Coast Path passes through Kingsand.
Kingsand is connected via the Rame bus link to Plymouth. The Rame bus link runs between Cremyll and goes to Plymouth via Torpoint. In Summer, the Cawsand Ferry runs a passenger service between Cawsand Beach and the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth for visitors to the Barbican. Walkers can reach the village by walking through Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
A key feature of the villages is the Clocktower along the seafront of Kingsand. It was erected to commemorate the coronation of King George V and the building it is attached to (locally referred to as the Institute) is used as a community hall. The Institute also contains a large cross-stitch tapestry picture of the two villages which was made by residents to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
There are three main beaches in the villages, which are separated by areas of rocks with interesting rockpools. Kingsand Beach is a mixture of sand and shingle which is located along The Cleave. Girt Beach is mainly shingle, but with some sand and can be found along Market Street. Cawsand Beach is mainly sand and is found along The Bound. A swimming beach known as Sandways lies a short walk out of the village across the rocks towards Fort Picklecombe.

A few weeks ago we answered our viewers questions about us, having a YouTube channel, or about Cornwall. One of the questions was about Hidden Gems in Cornwall and this stimulated a lot of comments, so we wanted to follow this up with a longer video.
Over the years, we have stumbled upon some exquisite coves, with views to die for and settings beyond compare. Most of these coves have been a delightful surprise whilst out walking, and have become favourite picnic spots, in and out of season.
In this video, we discuss what we think is a hidden gem, and list 10 Cornish coves or beaches that meet the criteria. After ranking them separately, we come together to discuss the merits of each and compile an ultimate list of 10 hidden gems Cornwall.
This list is our own opinion and intended to give you ideas of picturesque picnic spots, or somewhere to while away a lazy few hours. Please respect the peace and quiet of the local area and leave it as you found it for the next person to enjoy.
We have not visited every beach in Cornwall, and as our adventures continue, we may revise this list at some point in the future. Here's to finding more wonderful, unspoilt coves in Cornwall!
Please note that the coves and beaches mentioned in this video are off the beaten track, have little or no parking, no amenities (cafes and toilets) and no lifeguard. If you intend to visit some of them, please take great care, especially if you go swimming. Dog bans vary, for the latest information visit Cornwall Council website.

We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on YouTube, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.

Welcome to Matty’s diaries. Matty is a 15 year old complex character from the English Riviera who just so happens to be my son. Matty started time-lapsing and recording at the beginning of his isolation in March 2020. I have no idea where the idea came from, he just grabbed his IPad one day and started recording his jigsaw progress. This then expanded to diamond paintings, Lego and then our drives out. They became a way of Matty giving his news to loved ones and school friends who he no longer saw. As of today 16.10.2021 writing this update we have been isolating/Shielding 589 days so far. Matty’s just had his first vaccine and we hope to get him back to school in January once staff have retrained. Wrap around care is just me (Tracey) and Mattys dad Mike. I do the waking night shifts and sleep in the morning, this has given me hours of lonely time during the night to edit Matty’s creations and try and make them watchable. It’s almost become a therapy for Matty and I. I’m not going to list Matty’s health record but take away the obvious artificial airway he actually has more complex issues you can’t see. He is really a very innocent, unworldly 4-5 year old who thrives on routine and positive praise. So please be kind, we never imagined that anyone other than family would ever see the videos and to be honest the family stopped watching and commenting a long long time ago. However we have made some lovely YouTube friends who have been such a huge part of Matty’s shielding life. Each day Matty checks his comments to look for his regular viewers who he has come to rely on. They make him happy. Matty cannot reply to comments independently so as much as he reads them every night, I reply with him once or twice a week. We are grateful.
Matty’s drives are split in to smaller parts which makes them easier to find when he sends his weekly links to his class mates.
At this moment in time Matty is home schooled 5 mornings a week for 2 hours by his favourite TA from school, this stops and starts depending on Matty’s wellbeing and on covid/illness in school. This takes place In the garden or behind perspex to keep matty safe. The school have been amazing and we are very lucky.
Any questions please just ask me, I’m happy to answer. We travel within a 2 hour radius of Torbay and are happy to drive somewhere on request, it gives Matty a task and he loves a task.
Matty is in the van with headphones on watching/Listening to his beloved carnival dvds. It’s his happy place, the only place he doesn’t tic, rock, pick and pace. It’s also the closest Mike and I get to down time as Matty will be relaxed and not have any anxiety.
At the moment we stay in the van driving and people watching, rarely get out, Matty in general refuses to. We can be out for 3 - 4 hours on a longer drive so we purchased a Porto loo which is a bucket with a lid. Does the job and keeps Matty safe. It really is the basics and smallest things that are keeping us plodding along until we can be with loved ones again.
Seriously be kind please, we really are just winging it and I’m so exhausted that negative stuff effects me, it shouldn’t but it does.
Anyway stay safe, we hope you like our little videos, but if not that’s fine. We made them for Matty so as long as he is happy, life is good.
We watch the videos on tv everyday that we are stuck at home Which Is 90% of the time, they show us the outside world. So not for critics just for us to enjoy and reminisce and share with like minded souls.

Tregantle Beach - Whitsand Bay - Torpoint - Plymouth - Cornwall - Devon

Whitsand Bay, situated in south east Cornwall, England, runs from Rame Head in the east to Portwrinkle in the west. It is characterised by sheer, high cliffs, dramatic scenery and long stretches of sandy beaches. The South West Coast Path runs the length of the bay.
There is a fort at the beach as well. Tregantle Fort stands 360 feet above sea level. It is hexagonal in shape and is surrounded by a ditch on three sides. The fort was completed in 1865 and included a barracks designed for 1,000 men. It was intended to be armed with 22 7-inch guns but only seven were ever fitted. It was used for musketry training during World War I and gas warfare training and accommodation for US troops in World War II. It is currently part of the Defence Estate and is regularly used as a live firing range with red flag warnings and the path down to the beach closed. Tregantle Down Battery was also built a short distance from the fort between 1888 and 1894.
