The district headquarters is located in the town of Pathanamthitta. The administration of the district is led by the District Collector, who is supported by five Deputy Collectors responsible for various areas such as general matters, revenue recovery, land acquisition, land reforms, election, and Disaster Management.
In the rural areas, Pathanamthitta follows a three-tier system of panchayat, consisting of one district panchayat, 8 block panchayats, and 53 grama panchayats. In the urban areas, there are four municipalities in the district, along with a census town called Kozhencherry.
According to the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order of 2008, Pathanamthitta has five Assembly constituencies, reduced from eight. However, the district has been consolidated into a single Parliamentary constituency, contributing one seat to the Lok Sabha. The Pathanamthitta parliamentary constituency includes all five Assembly constituencies within the district, as well as two additional Assembly constituencies from the neighbouring Kottayam district. The main political parties in the district are Congress, Kerala Congress, CPM, and CPI.
The district of Pathanamthitta, which is the thirteenth revenue district of the State of Kerala, is situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats and extends to the low-lying rice fields that border Alappuzha District. It was established on the 1st of November, 1982, as per G.O. (M.S) No.1026/82/RD dated 29.10.1982, with its headquarters located in Pathanamthitta. The district is bounded on the North by Changanassery and Kanjirappally Taluks of Kottayam District and Peerumade Taluk of Idukki District, on the East by the State of Tamil Nadu, on the South by Kunnathur, Pathanapuram and Kottarakkara Taluks of Kollam District, and on the West by Chengannur, Mavelikkara and Kuttanad Taluks of Alappuzha District. It is replete with natural beauty, including undulating hills, mysterious forests, exotic wildlife, and enchanting valleys.

Tourism in Kumarakom largely revolves -around the backwaters of the Vembanad Lake. Several luxury and budget resorts lined up on the shores of the lake provide tourists with facilities for boating, yachting and fishing, with panoramic views of the lake. The other major attraction is the Bird Sanctuary, which is open from 6 am to 6 pm and can be visited by canoes arranged by local fishermen at the entrance to the sanctuary. A two-hour rowing canoe trip is quite cheap, and is best undertaken in the evening or early morning to avoid the afternoon sun.
Furthermore, the Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall and its surrounding rubber plantation are a photographer's delight. There is also the Bay Island Drift Museum near the Kumarakom beach for history lovers, open from 10 am – 5 pm on Tuesdays – Saturdays and from 11.30 am – 5 pm on Sundays.

Tiruvalla, is a municipality in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, India. It is also the headquarters of the Thiruvalla taluk. The town is spread over an area of 25.5 km2 (9.8 sq mi) and has a population of 52,883, down from 56,837 in 2001. It lies on the northern banks of the Manimala River, in a land-locked region surrounded by irrigating canals and rivers. Thiruvalla lies at an altitude of 14 meters above sea level, along the north bank of the Manimala river. Thiruvalla is criss-crossed by many natural canals (known as thodu in Malayalam) like Chanthathodu and Manippuzha.
Thiruvalla and its adjacent areas has a great diversity in soil types due to its position between the low-lying Kuttanad region and the Midlands. The downtown area has riverine alluvial soil, the eastern parts (classified under the Southern Midlands agro-ecological zone) have a laterite loam, and the western parts near Niranam (classified under the Kuttanad agro-ecological zone) have sandy soil resembling that of beaches. The Niranam region has a sandy-type soil as before the reclamation of Kuttanad from the Vembanad Lagoon the area originally was situated on its shores. The Upper Kuttanad region also has the Karappadam type of soil. This soil resembles clay loam in texture, has high organic matter content, and is found in areas about 1–2 m above sea level.
