Flood in southern Pakistan
On Sept 8, I visited Sukkur, Thul, Ghauspur and Kandhkot for the coverage of flood relief efforts mounted by the UN and other relief agencies in southern Sindh province where flooding has affected some seven million people.
Devastating floods in Pakistan have affected some 21 million people and killed nearly 2,000 others.
The weather was extremely hot and humid in these areas wondering how the poor souls were surviving there. Almost all of us were severely exhausted during the field trip and helicopter journey.
It was hearth-wrenching to see the plight of flood survivors especially children and women.
We started from Islamabad airport around 8 am on a chartered ATR, reached Sukkur in one hour 50 minutes. After a briefing in VIP lounge, we boarded a UN helicopter and traveled towards Thul, Ghauspur and Kandhkot. Kandhkot is district headquarter of Kashmore. Returned to Sukkur and after visiting relief camps in Sukkur, around 7.00 pm we started for Islamabad and reached their before just before 9 pm.
People living in tents in intense heat and humidity complained about lack of relief but at the same time expressed desire to return to their villages and rebuild their homes.
Mohammad Ramzan, 24, who came swimming in flood water with the help of an empty plastic Jerry can in the town of Ghauspur said that It took me one and half hour to reach from my village to this road to get ration for my family back in the village. The roads and tracks leading to my village some two miles away are still under water, but people have started returning, despite all difficulties.
Administration chief of Kashmore district Syed Abid Ali Shah said that We provided clean drinking water to flood hit people, that is why there is no case of cholera.
At a tent school outside the town of Kandhkot, some 200 boys were taking lessons in their native Sindhi language and national language Urdu. Only half of the children were sitting on benches, while rest were sitting on shabby mats in the roadside school. Vaccinators were giving them anti hepatitis C shots as the children as young as five crammed from books.
In Sukkur, some 100 angry flood affected men blocked the main highway for about one hour and broke window glass of a bus to protest non-payment of five thousand rupees cash, announced by government.The protesters wanted payment of 5,000 rupees before Eid, but on persuasion by authorities they dispersed peacefully wowing to stage another protest on Thursday. A senior army official said that troops were deployed here about one month ago and with untiring efforts and planning they were able to save Sukkur. Round the clock reinforcement of embankments saved Sukkur from a major catastrophe, the army official said.

Buddhist Stupa | Gumbat Balo kali Stupa the Oldest Example of Gandhara Architecture Swat Historic
Gumbat Stupa is a 2nd-century Buddhist stupa located in Swat valley in Pakistan. It is situated about 9 kilometres south of Birkot in the Kandag Valley of Gandhara.Coordinates: 34°41′22.3″N 72°11′05.9″E
The stupa was first recorded by A. Stein in 1930 in which the main stupa and the votive stupas were identified. Later, other archaeologist also excavated the area.
The remains of the stupa are scattered over a range of 1500 m wide and 1000 m breadth.The ruins was restored in 2011-2012 and about 25% of the terrace was excavated in 2011. The radiocarbon dating estimates the shrine and buildings were built in 2nd century.
The main stupa is located in the lower zone which has a plinth with length of 17 m in each side and a projection of about 3.7m. Above the dome exists remains of Harmika and umbrellas. The stupa has two terraces and a monastery and the dome is a double-domed cupola and surrounded by more than 20 smaller stupas.

Kasara ghat (also called as Thal Ghat or Thul Ghat) is a ghat section (mountain incline or slope) in the Western Ghats near the town of Kasara in Maharashtra. The Kasara Ghat is located on the busy Mumbai--Nashik route, and is one of the four major routes, rail and road routes, leading into the Mumbai. The railway line, which passes through the ghat is the steepest in India with a gradient of 1 in 37.
Thul Ghat (incline) is a series of mountain slopes in the Western Ghats traversed by the Bhusawal-Kalyan line. From Kalyan to Kasara, the line covers a length of 42 mi (68 km) and rises to an altitude of 948 ft (289 m) above sea level at Kasara. The next section from Kasara to Igatpuri is 9.5 mi (15 km) across Thul Ghat and within that distance the line rises from 289 ft (88 m) to 1,918 ft (585 m) the gradient in the section being 1:37. The line negotiates this steep incline with the help of curves. The Ehegaon viaduct along this line is 719 ft (219 m) long and 180 ft (55 m) high. According to IRFCA, The viaduct is situated in a steep valley nestling in the midst of hills that skirt around it in the tunnels and then is carried across the yawning chasm on a tall imposing structure... Some of the viaducts and tunnels on this line are considered outstanding achievements in Civil Engineering and are among the finest works in the world.

Thar Desert - Sindh - Pakistan
Tharparkar region derives its names from Thar and Parkar. The name Thar is from Thul, the general term for sand region or sand ridges and Parkar literary means “to cross over”.
There is no stream of fresh water in the region. However, in Nagarparkar there are two perennial springs, namely Anchlesar and Sardhro, as well as temporary streams called Bhatuyani River and Gordhro River which flow during the rainy season.
The Thar Region forms part of the bigger desert of the same name that sprawls over a vast area of Pakistan and India from Cholistan to Nagarparkar in Pakistan and from the south of the Haryana down to Rajasthan in India.
The desert's part in Pakistan also has a rich multifaceted culture, heritage, traditions, folk tales, dances and music due to its inhabitants who belong to different religions, sects and castes.
The area is mostly deserted and consists of barren tracts of sand dunes covered with thorny bushes. The ridges are irregular and roughly parallel, they rise to a height of about 46 metres and often create valleys.
When there is rain these valleys are moist enough to allow cultivation and when not cultivated, grass grows. The extraordinary salinity of the subsoil land and consequent shortage of potable water renders many quite picturesque salt lakes which rarely dry up.
The only hills are in Nagarparkar, on the Northern edge of the Runn of Kutchh, which belong to quite a different geological range. It consists of granite rocks, probably an outlying mass of the crystalline rocks of the Arravelli range.
The Arravelli range belongs to the Archean system which constitutes the oldest rocks of the earth's crust. This is a small area quite different from the desert.
The principle range Karoonjhar is 19 km in length and attains a height of 305 m. Smaller hills rise in the east, which is covered with jungle and pasturage and gives rise to two springs named Anchlesar and Sardhro as well as temporary streams called Bhatyani and Gordhro after the rain.
