10 Best place to visit in Theunissen South Africa

x

S1 – Ep 359 – Theunissen – Captivating Sights and a Mix of Emotions!

Our visit to Theunissen in the Free State was filled with captivating sights and a mix of emotions. As we ventured into the town, we were immediately greeted by the awe-inspiring presence of a magnificent steam locomotive. Its imposing form stood as a testament to the town's rich history. One notable highlight was the train station, even though its active days seemed to be behind it. It was heartening to witness the presence of diligent security guards, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the town's heritage and infrastructure. Moving forward, our exploration led us to the Voortrekker Memorial, an important landmark situated in front of the Town Hall. This significant piece of history was being carefully safeguarded by dedicated security personnel as well. The sense of reverence and appreciation for the past was palpable, and I felt privileged to have the opportunity to wander through this meaningful space. As we continued our journey through Theunissen, the local school caught our eye. Its expansive grounds and impressive facilities were indicative of a community that prioritises education and values its youth. As our visit drew to a close, we encountered the town's sports fields, a stark contrast to the vibrant memories they likely held. These fields, which once echoed with the laughter and cameraderie of games, now remained untouched, a poignant reminder of the shifting tides of time. Our time in Theunissen was a blend of admiration for its historical significance, a tinge of sadness for its neglected spaces, and an appreciation for the enduring spirit of its people. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #theunissen

S1 – Ep 360 – Winburg – Incredible History with a Profound Sense of Connection!

Our visit to Winburg was an incredible experience filled with a blend of historical charm. Arriving in the town, we bought a delightful meal before the sun dipped below the horizon, preventing us from exploring the town fully. Our lodging, nestled on a farm a short distance beyond the town's borders, was a true gem that held echoes of a rich heritage. The farm's allure was steeped in history. The next morning, we embarked on a journey to uncover some of the treasures of the town. The awe-inspiring churches and the elegant old stone buildings stood as testaments to Winburg's architectural legacy. Driving through the wide streets, we caught sight of endearing houses that seemed to have sprung from a storybook. Our adventure led us to the remarkable Voortrekker Monument with a great story. A majestic structure that, even though its gates were closed, left an indelible impression on us. The grandeur of the Rietfontein Dam left us breathless. Exploring the time-honoured graveyard unveiled a glimpse into the past, with one of the oldest graves we've encountered during our travels thus far. The captivating history of Winburg wove a tapestry of intrigue, enriching our visit with a profound sense of connection to the past. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #winburg

My Favourite Adventures in Africa and The UK

My favourite adventures for the first part of the 2020's. It's a totally personal selection with no winner and it's not in any particular order of preference. There are full videos of most of the destinations, in some cases more than one, links are below. So without further fanfare, here is my Top 10.

1). Zanzibar - a stunning tropical island off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. There are several islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago, the main island, commonly known as Zanzibar Island, is officially called Unguja, and it’s been inhabited for at least 20 000 years.

2). Matjiesfontein - visiting this green oasis in the vast emptiness of the Karoo, is to take a step back in time, to the days of Anglo-Boer War and the reign of Queen Victoria. The entire village was declared a National Monument in September 1975.
Video:

3). Victoria Falls Zimbabwe - also known as Mosi Oa Tunya, (translated as The Smoke That Thunders), on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, it's neither the widest nor the highest waterfall in the world, but it is one of the world's Big 3. David Livingstone, who viewed the falls in 1855 wrote that scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by Angels in their flight.
Video:

4). Narrowboat Life - for 4 months in 2020 we spent the summer cruising a small part of the 3500 km of the English canals. Living the narrowboat life is a slow one, best enjoyed at a maximum of 4 miles per hour, and the summer of 2020 will always occupy a very special place in my life.
Video (episode 1):

5). Africamps - late in 2020, after originally having to postpone the project due to lockdowns, we undertook an epic 5000km overland road trip over 6 weeks, visiting all 11 (at that time) Africamps across South Africa.
Video (episode 1):

6). Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - 250km north of Upington in the Northern Cape, the Kgalagadi is real wilderness. It’s a harsh environment, and totally unforgiving, with no cell phone reception and no tar roads it really is the last remaining truly really wild part of South Africa.
Video (part 1):

7). Southern Namibia - a 10 day overland road trip. Visiting the Fish River Canyon, Luderitz and the diamond mining ghost towns of Kolmanskop (Kolmannskuppe in German) and Elizabeth Bay. From there we turned north to Sossusvlei, an incredible and special place where the Tsauchab River finds it's way to the ocean blocked by the desert sands.
Video:

8). Kruger National Park - a popular overlanding destination in South Africa, ideal for day trip visitors with easy access from several entrance gates from the far North to the extreme South of the park. We've travelled the entire 360km north to south distance a couple of times, and will no doubt do so again.
Video (part 1):

9). Gamkaskloof AKA Die Hel - located in a remote valley in the Swartberg mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was entirely cut off from the outside world until 1962, when the road; actually a steep, windy and sometimes dangerous gravel track, was built.
Video:

10). A 2000 km round trip, over 7 nights through the beautiful Wild Coast which stretches over 250km of the most stunning coastline. Bad roads and incredible scenery are the order of the day.

Clifton Beach, Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town's spectacular Clifton Beach was rated as one of the Top Ten Beaches by the Discovery Travel Channel in 2003 and 2004 and has received Blue Flag status. In 2005 and 2006 it was rated by Forbes at number 8 in the Top 10 Topless beaches in the World. Clifton is neighbored by the suburbs of Camps Bay and Bantry Bay.

Llandudno Beach, Cape Town, South Africa

Llandudno is a stunning seaside hamlet on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape, South Africa. There are no street lights, shops or commercial activities, and the town has some of the most expensive residential property in South Africa.Llandudno Beach is one of the Cape's most naturally diverse beaches, surrounded by large granite boulders and overlooked by mountains. It is a popular surfing spot, but the swimming can be treacherous, with rough seas and extremely cold water. Llandudno has lifeguards on duty during the summer season, operated by the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving club. It is also the access point for the walk to Sandy Bay, an isolated beach still popular with nudists. On 26 September 1903 the valley was declared a township and named Llandudno after the North Wales seaside resort of Llandudno, which means Parish of Saint Tudno in the Welsh language. The striking similarities between Kleinkommetjie Bay in which the valley resides and Llandudno in Wales were noted as reasons for choosing this name. LESS

Birds of Kruger National Park, South Africa

South Africa's Kruger National Park is one of the world's largest and most iconic conservation areas. Habitats range from wide-open savannah and rugged thornveld to broadleaved woodland. This variation in habitat allows an incredible diversity of some 520 bird species.

Namaqua Daisies. A poem by Candass. Touwsrivier, Cape Town, South Africa.

While at Aquila Game Reserve, we met Candass Theunissen, a local poet from Touws River.
She read us one of her poems called Namaqua Daisies, from her book Deur my Oë - Through My Eyes.
I have added a transcript below in English & Afrikaans.

Oranje kombers so ver as wat kan sien
besaai is jy, gaan jul ons bedien?
met jul prag en praal
want julle is to nie in 'n kraal.

Namaqua Daisies so ver van jul huis
dankie tog maak jul gerus tuis
ons kyk en keer
sonder te oor en weer.

'n Foto of twee later
kyk net na al die skater
jy het daai effek
ek dink vir jou is ek gek

Namakwa Daisies

Orange blanket as far as can see
are you sown, are you going to serve us?
with all your splendor
for you are not in a compound.

Namakwa Daisies so far from your home
thank you, please feel free to make yourself at home
we look and turn without
having to look over and over again.

A photo or two later
just look at all the blades
you have that effect
I think I'm crazy about you.

S1 – Ep 372 – Pietermaritzburg – The Town Hall has a Breathtaking Design!

Our trip to Pietermaritzburg was an astonishing experience. We had heard about the city's stunning historic buildings, but witnessing them in person was truly unbelievable. The Town Hall left us in awe with its breathtaking design, and the old station, which we initially thought had succumbed to destruction, surprised us by standing immaculately-preserved. Walking along its platform was a delightful experience. Spotting the sign for Scottsville Racecourse excited us, prompting a visit to witness the immense stretch the horses cover during races, a truly mind-boggling sight. The following morning, amidst dealing with a flat tyre, we felt compelled to explore the old jailhouse where President Nelson Mandela had spent a night following his arrest. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #pietermaritzburg

#Stormsvlei Poort Pass is situated close to the main trunk routes as it descends down from the Bonnievale area to the tiny hamlet of Stormsvlei. The pass is 6,19 km long with an altitude drop of 195m. The poort is tarred. From Stormsvlei you can reach the Robertson Wine Valley via the Stormsvlei Poort.

#Riviersonderend is a small farming village with a peaceful rural atmosphere, situated on the main Garden Route between Cape Town and Mossel Bay on the N2 - 160 km from Cape Town, and is surrounded with farms. The town offers the tranquility of beautiful mountain and river scenery, a nine hole golf course and a host of other activities. The town is also only an hour away from several beaches.

There is uncertainty about the origin of the name Riviersonderend.

Willem ten Rhyne, who visited the cape in 1673, referred to the river, with it's source in the mountains, as the sine fine flumen (river without end).

In 1707 Jan Hatogh, a horticulturist employed by the Dutch East India Company and a seasoned traveller, referred to the river as the Kanna-kan-kann. This word was possibly derived from the Hessequa word Kamma-kan Kamma which, roughly translated, means water, endless water. The Hessequa were a local tribe of herdsmen.

Thus the believe that the name of the town was derived from the perennial Sonderend River at the foot of the Sonderend mountains. Riviersonderend, or Rivier Zonder End as it was known in earlier days, was established in 1923 when Miss Edith S V McIntyre sold the farm Tierhoek for 6000 pounds to the church council of the local Dutch reformed Church when the congregation was established.

Riviersonderend is a convenient base from which to explore the surrounding countryside and several Tourist busses make this a stopping point, when passing through the town. Nature lovers will delight in the magnificent views across the Riviersonderend Valley. Enjoy the beautiful wildflowers, fynbos, fresh air, mountains and scenic views that Riviersonderend Mountain has to offer.

#Greyton is a small town in the Overberg area in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Early history
Sir George Grey
Before Greyton was established in 1854, the verdant plains and forested ravines of the area were home to the Hessequas Khoikhoi tribe who had their kraals near the Gobos river, which they named after their ancestral chief. Their many thousands of cattle and sheep were the reason why Ensign Schriver of the Castle of Good Hope was sent here in the late 1600s to barter with their head man, Captain Stoffel Koekson. So rich did Koekson become from this bartering that he eventually took his people to live in the Boschmanskloof, where he built them proper mud-brick houses, the foundations of which still lie under the old houses of Boschmanskloof today.

Weltevreden farm
In 1793, Koekson's tribal lands were given to the young Dutchman, Marthinus Theunissen, who built a homestead (no longer standing) on his farm Weltevreden. He did not stay long because he could not resolve the constant disputes with his neighbours at Boschmanskloof and Genadendal over boundaries and straying cattle.

Subsequent owners of Weltevreden included two wealthy brothers of the famous Cloete family from Constantia who bred horses. Marthinus Theunissen himself became a very wealthy man in Stellenbosch, owning Vergelegen at one time.

Episode 9 What makes the Eastern Free State lekker?

In this episode we feature the Mafube Municipal region (Frankfort, Tweeling, Villiers) and show some more stunning places in the Eastern Free State.

Cape Town - Worth waiting for (2021)

Credit: Cape Town Tourism
Take a look at a few of the many great things to experience in and around Cape Town:

BLUE FLAG BEACHES
The Blue Flag program is not only an identifier of which beaches are the best to visit, but also helps to improve tourism and facilities, and boosts coastal ecosystem management and awareness. Since 1987, the international Blue Flag operation has become the most well-known eco-label of its kind, with almost 4 000 Blue Flag beaches and marinas in the world.
Highlights:
The internationally recognized award given to beaches that meet global standards of excellence
Beaches are rated yearly according to safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and environmental management
South Africa boasts more than 30 Blue Flag beaches

TABLE MOUNTAIN AERIAL CABLEWAY
The ride is a gentle one, the rotating state-of-the-art cable car taking visitors from the lower station to the top in around 5 minutes. It operates seven days a week and trips occur within 10 to 15 minutes of each other. The time of the day’s last excursion varies throughout the year. Atop the mountain is a self-service buffet cafe while you can always pack a picnic and enjoy what still is part of a national park.
You will be 3,500ft above the city and here, in this unique location, you will find rock hyrax, lizards, butterflies and the odd porcupine. There is also a wide array of birdlife from eagles to sunbirds flying above great patches of fynbos, the Cape’s indigenous flora.

V&A WATERFRONT
The V&A Waterfront is one of Africa’s most visited destinations with more than 24 million visitors annually. Situated in the oldest working harbour in South Africa, with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop, makes the V&A Waterfront is a favourite for local and international visitors.
Highlights:
Variety of attractions and activities that includes helicopter rides, leisure boat cruises, stand-up paddling, live entertainment, Two Oceans Aquarium Cape Wheel and much more.
Watershed – Africa’s new home for craft and design with 150 tenants and 360 local brands
-Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) – Africa’s most significant museum in over a 100 years
-NuMetro Cinema – first 4DX cinema in Africa.
-Over 500 retail stores – diverse offering of local and international brands that guarantee something for everyone shopping in Cape Town, irrespective of taste or budget.
-Over 80 eateries – Whether you are looking for a quick bite from our world-class food market or a more leisurely experience at some of our unique fine dining restaurants
-V&A Waterfront is home to 22 historical landmarks.
-Visit Battery Park – dedicated skate park, basketball courts and a grassed area for picnics and other recreational activities.
.
BOULDERS BEACH
Visiting the quirky penguins at Boulders Beach, between Simon’s Town and Cape Point, is a unique experience.
The colony, which lives incongruously in the middle of a residential area, is one of the few sites where African penguins – previously called Jackass penguins because of their braying call – can be observed at close range, as they wander freely in a protected natural environment.

SANBI – KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS
Stroll down meandering paths that explore the meticulously crafted and maintained flora, it contains many examples of fynbos. This plant exists as a huge part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and is unique to this part of the world. Tired of walking beneath the boughs and leaves, you can always relax on the lawns and indulge in a picnic of wine and cheese. There are also two restaurants and a shop, with an indigenous nursery and a sculpture garden. Finally, the Boomslang is an amazing canopy walkway which provides visitors with brilliant vistas of the surrounding nature.

ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM
Now, Robben Island is a World Heritage Site and museum, offering daily tours. The tour begins at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront with a multimedia exhibition, museum shop and restaurant, after which, guests hop onto the ferry for a scenic trip to the island. Once on Robben Island itself, the tour is guided by a former political prisoner of the island, for unique and incomparable insights into the island’s history.

GROOT CONSTANTIA: A WINE LOVER’S PARADISE
Wine lovers travel far and wide to experience Groot Constantia – South Africa’s oldest wine estate. Groot Constantia has been producing wine of outstanding quality uninterruptedly since 1685 with its award-winning wines still celebrated around the world today.

The estate’s historic Grand Constance – a sweet wine from the Napoleonic era – is a source of great pride and can be purchased at the Cloete Cellar, the only place where it was ever produced. The Cloete Cellar also hosts a tasting room and a museum where a 195-year-old bottle of Grand Constance, brought back to its birthplace, is on display. Two more tasting rooms play host to decadent chocolate and wine pairings in addition to award-winning wines on offer.

Ep. 14: Camping at Erfenis Dam / Dept. of Tourism, Environmental and Economic Affairs / Rustic

Episode 14: Camping at Erfenis Dam
Welcome back to my channel. In this episode I am camping at Erfenis Dam near Theunissen. It is roughly 120km from Bloemfontein.
Erfenis Dam is a government park and it falls under the Dept. of Tourism, Environmental and Economic Affairs. Unfortunately the camping site is a bit neglected, but if you enjoy fishing and you are not looking for 5 star ablution facilities, then you will probably enjoy your stay.
The last 9 kilometers to the dam is a gravel road which is not is a very good condition. If you drive a bakkie and you tow an off-road caravan you shouldn't have any problems.
I will say that although the ablutions need a lot of TLC it is kept clean.
You can definitely check out Erfenis Dam if you are in the area, but do not expect too much. I enjoyed peace and quiet while I stayed there.
Thank you for watching.

950 gold miners trapped underground in South Africa February 01 2018 This Day in History

950 gold miners trapped underground in South Africa February 01 2018 This Day in History

About 950 gold miners were stuck underground in South Africa on this day in 2018 after a power cut, the mine's owner said, though the workers were not reported to be in immediate danger.

The Sibanye-Stillwater mining company said a massive power outage caused by a storm had prevented lifts from bringing the night shift to the surface at the Beatrix gold mine, in the small town of Theunissen near the city of Welkom.

The depth where the miners were trapped was uncertain, but the mine has 23 levels, going down to about 1,000 metres (3280 feet) below ground.

One cable was restored during the day and 272 workers were rescued, but 955 remained trapped by early evening, the company said.

They have been underground for over 24 hours and nervous family members patiently gathered along the road to the shaft, kept a distance by security guards. A generator at the shaft had started working.

Earlier Wellsted had said that engineers were struggling with a software fault to get emergency generators to operate and re-start the lifts following the storm.

August 2017 five mineworkers died after sections of a gold mine collapsed outside Johannesburg.

The country possesses rich mineral reserves and has some of the world's deepest gold mines.

Gold was for many decades the backbone of South Africa's economy, but production has declined sharply due to depletion of reserves.
