Tunis, the capital of Tunisia | Best Places to Visit in Tunis, Tunisia

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia, a country in North Africa.
It is located on the Mediterranean Sea's Gulf of Tunis, behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette.
Founded by the Libyans in the 2nd millennium BCE, and over time occupied by Berbers and Numidians.
The city of Tunis has been controlled by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arab Muslims, Ottomans, the Spanish, the French, and the Germans, and finally achieved independence as the capital of Tunisia in 1956.
This history has made Tunis a city of wonder with the largest cultural contrasts.
Tunis is divided into the World Heritage Listed old city and the new city, or ville nouvelle in French.
The city has many ancient buildings and a captivating mix of North African and French architecture.

Jugurthine War battlefield (Numidians vs Romans): exploring Tunisia's north-west

Welcome to my latest travel VLOG here in Tunisia, North Africa. Join me as we explore the hot spring in the functional Roman baths of Hammam Mellegue. We then climb up Jugurtha's Table, a mesa that gives incredible views of the Ez-Zghalma plain in Kef Governorate. You can even see into Algeria from the top! We end the adventure by heading to Haïdra, right on the Algerian border, which used to be called Ammaedara, one of the oldest Roman cities in Africa. I hope this video encourages travel to Tunisia!

Kasserine Pass WW2, Thelepte & Cillium: World War II, Archaeology & Insurgency in Tunisia's West

Today we head to Kasserine Governorate in the west of Tunisia to visit the location of the Battle of Kasserine Pass. Here, in February 1943, was the first major engagement between US and Axis troops in North Africa in World War II. Rommel's Afrika Korps killed over 3,000 American troops, leading to George S. Patton replacing Major General Lloyd Fredendall as Commanding General of the US II Corps. After seeing the war memorial, we head past Jebel Chambi National Park, then Thelepte Airbase, before arriving at the archaeological site of Thélepte. We end the day investigating the Ancient Roman remains of Cillium in Kasserine town itself, including the amazing Mausoleum of the Flavii.

SAFETY NOTE TO VIEWERS: There is an ongoing insurgency in Kasserine Governorate, concentrated in the mountainous regions around Jebel Chambi, Jebel Mghilla and Jebel Salloum (which are all very close to the town of Kasserine). I discuss this in the video. Be sure to check travel advisories before heading to this part of Tunisia, and take appropriate safety precautions.

The Battle of Zama: where Hannibal was defeated in Punic Wars! Finding the battlefield

In today's travel VLOG we explore three archaeological sites in Tunisia's Siliana Governorate. First we head to the ruins of Kbor Klib, which may have been built by infamous Roman ruler Julius Caesar. Then, we track down the mysterious mausoleum at Kasour Toual Zouamel. Lastly, we walk around Zama Minor (Zama Regia), which is likely near the site of the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE. This was where Scipio Africanus defeated Hannibal and his elephants to end the Second Punic War.

Tunis to Tabarka: road trip / enjoying life in Tunisia, North Africa (Travel VLOG / Tunisia VLOG)

This week in my Tunisia VLOG I have been exploring Tunisia's far north-west, over by the Algerian border in North Africa. My first stop in Jendouba Governorate was Tabarka, a beautiful coastal resort town in the Kroumirie mountainous region. The drive over there took me through the fertile (and hot) plains around Béja, which have been agriculturally significant since before Ancient Roman times. We then climbed up into the cork oak forests, which look very Alpine and are a lot cooler during the summer months than Tunis.

It wouldn't be a Scafidi Travels road trip without some kind of mechanical problem, but in the end the Mitsubishi and I made it in one piece and got to enjoy the town's main beach, overlooking the 16th century Genoese fortress. I will definitely be heading back to Tabarka soon for two reasons: firstly, I still need to review La Cigale, which is a luxury hotel on the coast that friends tell me is one of the best in the country. Secondly, the beaches around town had some serious surf potential, and I need to try surfing in Tunisia! Life in Tunisia is great!

Stay tuned for more videos of my most recent road trip, as I head south from Tabarka to Aïn Draham, Beni 'Mtir, Hammam Bourguiba, Jendouba, Bulla Regia and Chemtou!

Coast North of Sousse

Today we are exploring some coastal tourist sites north of Sousse. We begin with the very tourist-friendly Port El Kantaoui, complete with golf course and modern marina. We then drive north 10km to reach Sebkhet Halk el Manzel, an amazing salt lake that is home to a large flock of Greater Flamingo. This is designated as a Ramsar Site, because it is a Wetland of International Importance. We then drive another 10km north to Plage El Madfoun, a beautiful sandy beach on the north side of the quaint seaside town of Hergla (which has loads of great eating options!) From Hergla, we head 30km north to the archaeological site of Uppenna, where we find a Byzantine fortress and also a basilica with mosaics and Latin inscriptions. We finish the exploration driving 20km northwest to Takrouna, for a rather sad update on the situation at the popular Amazigh Café Le Rocher Bleu.

Libyco-Roman ruins at Dougga (Thugga) UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tunisia, North Africa: travel VLOG

Today we tour the incredible Ancient Roman site of Dougga in Tunisia, which is one of the country's eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The others sites listed by UNESCO are: the Amphitheatre of El Jem, the Archaeological Site of Carthage, Kairouan, the Medina of Sousse, the Medina of Tunis, the Punic Town of Kerkuane and its Necropolis and Ichkeul National Park (all of which will eventually have videos here on Scafidi Travels!)

Amazingly, I had Dougga all to myself for a private two hour video tour! The archaeological site of Thugga/Dougga is located in the North-west region of Tunisia, perched on the summit of a hill at an altitude of 571 m, dominating the fertile valley of Oued Khalled. Before the Roman annexation of Numidia, Thugga had existed for more than six centuries and was, probably, the first capital of the Numidian kingdom. It flourished under Roman rule but declined during the Byzantine and Islamic periods. The impressive ruins which are visible today give an idea of the resources of a Romanised Numidian town. Tunisia's Star Wars filming locations: Mos Espa Slave Quarters in Ksar Ommarsia, Medenine

Today we take a walk around Ksar Ommarsia in Medenine City, southern Tunisia. This ksar, which continues to function as a pedestrian walkway, served as the filming location for the Mos Espa slave quarters street scenes in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Amplifying the authenticity of the historic Amazigh site to create a futuristic setting, crews dressed all four of the ksar’s walls with fresh plaster and paint, added faux doors for the majority of the ghorfas (grain storage silos pictured in my film), as well as door-frame ribbing, door control panels, cooling/heating pipes and other fixtures. Crews also stationed one moisture evaporator prop in the southwest section of the narrow courtyard and covered the at stone courtyard floor with sand, to depict the desert Tatooine climate.

We also do a 1 minute room tour of the Hotel Ksour Medenine, which is a good place to stay if you want to explore Medenine's Star Wars sites.

Hello Snow

The image of Tunisia is very rarely associated with that of the snow. Yet it snows almost every year in some areas of Tunisia (especially in the northwest). The recent days have known an unusual amount of snow falling even in the heart of the Tunisian desert in the South.
These photos were taken in February 2012 in Thala (Kasserine governorate).

CWGC Commonwealth War Graves in Béja & Medjez-el-Bab, Tunisia, North Africa (Armistice Day 2020)

This Armistice Day, we take a short tour of the beautifully maintained Commonwealth War Graves in Béja & Medjez-el-Bab here in Tunisia, North Africa. While there were no military operations in Tunisia during World War I, thousands of Tunisian troops were mobilised to fight abroad as part of the French war effort. We also find five Commonwealth World War I burials in Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, brought in from Tunis (Belvedere) Cemetery or Carthage (Basilica Karita) Cemetery in 1950.

During World War II, Tunisia was the scene of Operation Torch (8 November 1942 – 13 May 1943), which was the Allied invasion of North Africa. The fighting in Tunisia led to the capture of over 250,000 German and Italian troops, including most of Erwin Rommel's famous Afrika Korps. Crucially, it also opened up another front against Nazi Germany, which brought some relief to Soviet troops fighting the pivotal Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943).

Tunisia is home to eleven Commonwealth cemeteries and one memorial. These are all carefully looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). You can find more details on their website:

I will be visiting all of these cemeteries as part of my project to write the Bradt Travel Guide to Tunisia (1st Edition). I will create a dedicated playlist as I film them, and will include full historical details in the guidebook. Likewise with the French war graves that I visit around the country, such as at Enfadaville (modern day Enfidha).

Tunisia is also home to cemeteries for the Axis soldiers, including a very large German military cemetery at Borj Cedria. I will also be including tours of these lesser-visited war cemeteries on my channel.
