Which MN North Shore Campground is the BEST?

Here is what you will learn:

If you're planning a North Shore camping trip, you're in for a treat. There are nine Minnesota campgrounds located along the shores of Lake Superior and each one is unique to offer a different camping experience and adventure.

Gooseberry Falls State Park offers the most accessible waterfalls, creating an amazing waterfall experience. However, be aware that the parking lot can get quite crowded, especially on weekends and holidays.

The campground at Gooseberry Falls State Park has 70 semi-private campsites with trees. Note that these campsites do not have hookups, including electric hookups.

Split Rock State Park boasts a lighthouse, and you can take lighthouse tours from the History Center. Pebble Beach is a great spot for kayaking, nestled in a protective Cove.

Some of the campsites within the Shipwreck Creek Campground in Split Rock State Park have unique rock formations.

The Black Beach Campground in Silver Bay is a short walk from a stunning black sand beach, and this beach is a rarity in Minnesota. A few campsites here offer full hookups.

Tettegouche State Park boasts four magnificent waterfalls, with the High Falls of the Pigeon River plummeting 120 feet. Trails to the waterfalls can be challenging but offer spectacular views.

Tettegouche State Park's small campground of 34 sites provides a private experience with trees separating most sites. It's a popular destination with over half a million visitors annually.

The Lamb's Resort offers about 70 campsites and 18 cabins for rent. It features some of the most desirable Lake Superior waterfront campsites, though reservations for these can be hard to come by.

Temperance River State Park boasts riverside trails along the impressive Temperance River Gorge. Whether you're staying at the upper or lower Campground, visiting the gorge is a must.

Cascade River State Park is known for its cascading waterfalls, including the impressive Cascade Falls. With 39 campsites, about half with electric hookups, it's a popular spot for nature enthusiasts.

Grand Marais Campground is the largest on the North Shore, with 300 campsites. While the campsites are closer together, its location offers easy access to Downtown Grand Marais for shopping, dining, and more.

Judge C.R. Magney State Park is famous for Devil's Kettle waterfall. The campsites are average in size and none have hookups, but the stunning waterfall hike is a must-do.

Bonus Tips & Things to Know Before You Start Planning Your North Shore Trip!

- Plan ahead for your North Shore camping trip, as campgrounds fill up quickly. Consider visiting during the week to avoid weekend crowds.

- Highway 61 can get congested, especially on weekends. Consider arriving on a Sunday or planning your activities during weekdays to avoid heavy traffic.

- Hike the trails in the morning to avoid crowds and secure parking.

- Cell service may be limited, especially in remote areas.

- While Grand Portage State Park doesn't have a campground, it's worth a visit for Minnesota's tallest waterfall, located right next to the Canadian border.

TEMPERANCE RIVER STATE PARK | Hiking & Waterfalls | Minnesota’s North Shore on Lake Superior

Temperance River State Park is so unique and one of my favorite state parks on Minnesota’s North Shore. The river flows deep within a gorge which makes the hiking trails so great because the waterfall trails run right along the river gorge. There are several small falls along the length of the gorge. It's an easy hike to go along the river and see the water churning. You do not need to pay to enter the state park if you park along highway 61—so be sure to stop and enjoy the beautiful views and great hikes!

If you want to see more vlogs like this be sure to give this a thumbs up!

The Ultimate Minnesota North Shore Waterfall Tour

Minnesota Waterfall Season is almost here ✨

(Send to a friend you want to road trip with)

After this current round of snow not only are we getting much needed moisture, it’s also going to help our waterfall season. Here’s 10 I think you should check out:

1. Jay Cooke State Park: walk the swinging bridge over the rapids
2. Tettegouche State Park: explore the Cascades Trail, Shovel Point Trail, High Falls and Illgen Falls
3. Gooseberry Falls State Park: (this is the most accessible park to visit) visit the upper, lower and middle falls
4. Beaver Falls: park at the Beaver Bay Rest Area and see the falls from the bridge
5. Caribou Falls: park at the Caribou River Rest area and hike to the set of stairs that leads you down to the falls
6. Temperance River State Park: hike up the river to see the rapids and “hidden falls”
7. Cascade River State Park: hike to Cascade falls
8. Fall River: located along the expansion of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, located at the Grand Marais Recreation area
9. Judge C.R. Magney State Park: hike to Devil’s Kettle Falls and see if you can figure out where the water goes
10. Grand Portage State Park: take the trail to the High Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in all of Minnesota

*note there are so many more that are more hidden and require some additional research but due to their lack of infrastructure (I.e. parking, rangers, bathrooms I won’t be sharing them in this list.)

If you want a link to one of my favorite Minnesota waterfall books that help me plan my spring adventures comment “waterfalls” and I’ll send it to you!

Save money by buying a MN State Parks yearly pass vs. the day pass and also be prepared with layers, waterproof clothing, hiking spikes and boots!

Be sure to follow @taytakesatrip for more Minnesota coffee, brews, stays and views.

Temperance River in July
-----------------------------------------

Patty M.'s Review on The Dyrt:

▶︎ Beautiful North Shore campground
Upper campground is right on Lake Superior. Sites are partially shaded and the undergrowth is tall enough in July to provide lots of privacy. It's a short hike to the rocky shoreline. We visited twice this year. In the early spring during waterfall season, you could hear the roar of the Temperance River from the campground. In July, the river had returned to normal and was great for swimming and cliff diving.

Temperance River Gorge

Feeling the flow in Temperance River State Park! This is just a 30 minute drive north of us, and it's worth every minute it takes to get there.

These falls are some of the most unique. The gorge cut into the rock is both fascinating and eerie. There a several small falls along the length of the gorge. At the far end of the gorge is a waterfall, with a drop of 10 feet or so. Beyond that the river is strewn with rocks, and if the water is low enough you can cross the river without getting your feet wet. You may catch a glimpse of thrill-seekers rock jumping around or into the river. We don’t recommend tempting mother nature.

Video of Temperance River State Park, MN from Sara P.

climbing again!
-----------------------------------------

Sara P.'s Review on The Dyrt:

▶︎ Awesome hiking and right on the North Shore
We LOVE this campground, as it's an awesome place to to call home base for a bit and take day trips around the North Shore. We camp every summer with three other families and this week we ended up in the lower campground of Temperance River State Park. The sites were nice and private with paths between so we could go see our friends next to us. The only downfalls were: the showers were across the river and up a LOT of steps and our site was just down from Hwy 61, so was a bit noisy with traffic at times.
Day trips:
Lutsen for alpine slides, gondola rides and hiking
Grand Marais for shopping, mini golf, hiking, and breweries
Hike the Temperance River trail (although sketchy with a lot of small children who like to go too close to the edge)
Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center - a small gem where the kids got to learn about rocks and the geology of the North Shore. maybe a bit above their heads, but the adults loved it!
Just throwing rocks in the lake from large boulders just down from our campground
Highly recommend this as a place to stay for short or longer periods of time due to how much there is to do around the area!

Minnesota's Crosby Manitou and Temperance River state parks

While traveling along the North Shore of Minnesota, we checked out Crosby Manitou State Park and Temperance River State Park to see the unique experiences they offer.

Crosby Manitou had some nice trails leading to pretty waterfalls. And while we didn't know what we were going to see at Temperance River, we walked away declaring it a must-see along the North Shore.
