Discover Tawau

Have you seen Tawau?
Here's a video of the in and around Tawau town and the attractions in Tawau. Just look at the seafood galore!

The Peaks Tawau - 15 Things You Need To Know Before Going

If you are into view from 1234 ft above sea level, looking to Tawau Town from 8km away. This is the place for you. Make sure to be here around 5 onwards to catch the sunset.

Please check the weather condition first before going as if it is cloudy or raining, you might not see anything at all. I came here twice to shoot but unable to get good sunset pictures. Will try again.

Entry fee is quite expensive at RM10 per pax. This does not include any drinks or snacks. You will have to pay for those inside. And the food can be quite expensive also.

Those asides, it is a very calm space to unwind while taking in fresh air and soak the sunset view. If you manage to stay until night time, you will be able to see the place in another view once all the lights start coming.

The 12 things you need to know before going to The Peaks
1) Waze The Pearks in order to go there. or take a grab
2) Located 18km from Tawau
3) If you choose to drive, be careful as the road is quite narrow
4) Open daily except on Tuesday
5) Opening hour 12pm to 8pm
6) Last check in is 7pm
7) No time limit. You can literally all the 8 hours there
8) Ticket Price is quite expensive at RM10/ adult. RM5/child and FOC for children below 2 years old
9) Elevation at 1234 ft. Nice number
10) Good for photo enthusiast
11) Surau, Camping site and BBQ facility are available
12) You can watch Tawau town from an 8km view. Better view during night time
13) Cafe available for snack, ice cream and drinks but be warned slightly expensive
14) Mystical sunset view but only when the weather permits
15) Night light is amazing. Worth to wait. But be careful driving back in the dark

TAWAU, an Indonesian vibe in Sabah? - Backpacking Borneo (5 of 9)

WANT MORE? DON’T MISS THE NEXT VIDEO - SUBSCRIBE NOW!!! ????

This time we decided to explore the world’s third largest island... Borneo! Intrigued by its ancient equatorial rainforests, spectacular jungle wildlife, rich indigenous culture and culinary melting pot, we were looking for something wild - Borneo sure did not disappoint!
Come on an adventure with us as we explore Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo. We discover untouched primary rainforests, where you feel like you are in the Jurassic lost world; catch a glimpse in the dense canopy of wildlife such as the endangered orangutang and the cartoon like proboscis monkey; learn about the heritage and old traditions of the Murut and the Kadazandusun tribes and admire the wide range of delicious cuisine of this magnificent island.

On our way to the Danum Valley, we laid over in the 3rd largest city of Sabah, after Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. It is located on the Semporna Peninsula in the southeast coast, besides the Celebes Sea. Thanks to this location, Maliau is well-known for providing the best seafood of the island.
Completely bombarded by the Brits in 1944 to force out the invading Japanese army, the architecture of the town won't stick in your mind. However its food specialities with a strong Indonesian, Philippine and Chinese inspiration and its friendly locals are worth the stopover.
Tawau is also the gateway to the awesome Tawau Hills Park, a smaller and cheaper alternative to Danum, where you can encounter if you're lucky, some pigmy elephants, horned bills and some Gibbons and soak in some natural hot sulphur springs, perfect to detox your skin!
Have a look! And let's get lost!

Tallest Tropical Tree in Tawau Hills Park, Sabah Malaysia Borneo Nature Travel 婆罗洲游踪斗湖国家公园沙巴马来西亚旅游景点

Location : Tawau Hills Park, Tawau Division, Sabah, Malaysia

We had ended our 10 day Kalimantan trip and entered Tawau through Indonesian Nunukan by express boat ( Dragged our luggage for about 100m to Ming Hing coffeeshop for a sip while I contacted the car rental guy Mr Chua (+60163451881). With the help of the GPS app in my phone, we slowly maneuvered our way out of town and hit Kuhara Road for the 30min drive to Tawau Hills Park. It was not difficult to locate even for first timers like us.

Along the way, we gave two pregnant Bugis mothers with six kids a lift. They were walking under the hot sun after visiting their fathers in the lockup, obviously illegal migrant workers. Dropped them off at Gudang 4 oil palm estate. Felt sorry for them.

It was a pleasant surprise to arrive at a nice carpark and noticing an obviously well organized park complete with visitor’s booth, canteen, friendly staff to answer our enquiries, hostel accommodation, picnic spot, multiple trails for hiking and of course the 900m trail to the ‘Tallest Tropical Tree’. Paid RM3 each (RM10/foreigner), given a map and off we went in search for the ‘tallest tree’ or so we thought.

The dry gravel trail was breezy and shaded by trees of dizzying heights, 60m tall or more. The ‘anti slip’ wire mesh on the wooden bridges was just brilliant.

Half way along the trail I thought I heard up in the foliage as if someone was sawing a tree. Stopped to check but saw nothing. The same noise intermittently continued as we walked along. Later, I caught sight of who was making those noises, hornbills! It was the flapping of their wings. So many of them, mostly Pied plus some Rhinoceros ones. If only we had time we would have tied our hammocks and stayed here all day long just to watch them.

Finally we reached the spot where the giant yellow meranti tree was standing. The size of its buttress was nothing extraordinary. We have seen bigger ones in Mulu and elsewhere in Kalimantan during our many hikes. It may not have the girth but its height made it the king of the tropics.…..at least for a few years.

Little did we know that it was not the tallest anymore. It became the pretender to the crown in June 2016 when the real Yao Ming was discovered some 120km away to the west in Maliau basin. Scientists using laser mapping accidentally noticed this gentle giant which is also a yellow meranti towering over all the other pretenders in the Maliau Basin. The local climber was attacked by an eagle and bees before he could tape measure it at 89.5m. But as of 10th Novermber 2016, it was announced that yet another taller tree was discovered in the Danum Valley, a runaway winner at 94.1m (World’s Tropical Tree Discovered). So far, the tallest ever recorded in the tropics although temperate trees could do more than 115m.

Upon checking online reviews of Tawau Hills Park, things were not as rosy as we perceived earlier on. There were attacks of blood sucking horseflies and leeches. Blocked trails due to fallen trees and overgrown bushes. No signage to indicate crossing a stream to the hotspring. Dried up hotspring or not hot at all, season depending. The most shocking negative news in Wikipedia was the increasing number of mysterious disappearance of visitors to the park. Shudder. My guess is in such a heavily forested place many victims must have been swept away and killed by flash mountain floods while soaking in the waterfalls and rivers. Maybe I will just stick to day trips for my future visits. The flora/fauna and the prana was too good, especially the good prospect of spotting the 6 types of hornbills that thrive here.

Bombastic Borneo shows you the gateway to indigenous lifestyle, culture and nature of Borneo.

Tawau Hills Park, Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia/ Taman Bukit Tawau

Tawau Hills Park lies 24 km NW of Tawau and was gazetted to protect water catchment resources for Tawau Town and the Semporna Peninsula. At least 7 major rivers originate here. The Tawau River flows through the middle of the 27,972 ha park and forms many natural deepwater pools and waterfalls, for example, the Table Waterfall.

In this video, i get to stand just next to the ex-world's tallest tropical tree, Seraya Kuning Siput(88.32M) here at Tawau Hills Park, Sabah, Malaysia.

The world's tallest tropical tree at the moment is called Menara (100.8M) , found in Danum Valley conservation area, also in Sabah, Malaysia

Both trees come from the same species Shorea faguetiana.

How do we feel when planning on Tawau?

To be honest at first, we started wondering why Tawau has always get sidelined by travelers? Typically, they’ll just heading straight to Semporna or Mabul Island after the touch down and take off right after the trip.
