Koktobe is the hill on which stands the TV tower which services all of Almaty, it replaced the smaller tower next to the main square. It bears a striking resemblance to black mountain tower in Canberra, both in terms of the tower and it's relationship with the city. The view of the mountains was spectacular, but the city was covered with cloud and smog. Fortunately the setting sun made this look like a sea of white and probably improved the view. The cable-car which takes you up the mountain from the end of Abai street, near the KIMEP university, is relatively new as the previous one was destroyed in an earthquake. Each 15 minutes the two cars swap places and a ride costs 500Tenge ($5AUS) each way. At the top of the hill there is a well built look-out area, a number of resturants and souvenier stores. The three or for cars that I saw at around 4-5pm where all full and the place seemed quite popular both with young couples, other locals and tourists. The Koktobe hill was probably the most 'tourist friendly' area of Almaty that I have seen, you can even buy a Kazakhstan Key-ring, fridge-magnet, t-shirt etc.
