OFF GRID On the Most Remote Island on Earth
This is the Hakaui Valley on the remote island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas, French Polynesia.
With the nearest continental mass over 3000 miles away, this is one of the most remote islands on earth, and the Hakaui valley cannot be reached by road, plane, or anything other than a boat or a 17km hike from the nearest town of Taiohae.
The island itself is a full 3 hour flight from the capitol of Tahiti!
For this adventure, I'm seeing if I can survive for 24 hours in this jungle without electricity (other than minimal solar light), refrigeration, communication with the outside world, and the basic comforts we take for granted. Here they live off the grid, mostly living off the land foraging, growing their own food, and hunting for what they eat. This is true farm to table! This is a unique opportunity to see what it's like to live off the land, to be in harmony with the environment, and to get a peek into Marquesan culture.

Nuku Hiva is home to Kumuihei Me'ae (ancient shrine or sacred place) with the largest Tikis in the Islands of Tahiti. Aranui 5 spent the day there with guests also visiting Taiohae (main town) before getting into many (many!!!) 4x4s to get up to the archaeological site

Exploring Nuku Hiva Ep. 94
After our thirty days at sea, we are anxious to explore the remote Pacific paradise of Nuku Hiva. We opt for a land tour with a local guide and hop aboard his 4x4 for a full day covering the entire island. We see ancient Polynesian ruins, sacrifice alters, Copra plantations, local artisans and even dine on the local specialty of wild goat in coconut sauce. It is a very full day with magnificent views in all directions and we return to Gargoyle exhausted but delighted by this wonderful place.

Marquesas Islands Travel - The Marquesas Islands are a group of volcanic islands in French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the southern Pacific Ocean. The Marquesas are located at 9° 00S, 139° 30W. The highest point is the peak of Mount Oave (French: Mont Oave) on Ua Pu island at 1,230 m (4,035 ft) above sea level.[2]
The Marquesas Islands form one of the five administrative divisions (subdivisions administratives) of French Polynesia. The capital of the Marquesas Islands administrative subdivision is the settlement of Taiohae on the island of Nuku Hiva. The population of the Marquesas Islands was 8,632 at the August 2007 census. Nuku Hiva is the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, and is therefore an overseas country of France in the Pacific Ocean. It was formerly also known as Île Marchand and Madison Island.
Herman Melville wrote his book Typee based on his experiences in the Taipivai valley in the eastern part of Nuku Hiva. Robert Louis Stevenson's first landfall on his voyage on the Casco was at Hatihe'u, on the north side of the island, in 1888
Western Nuku Hiva is characterized by a steep but fairly regular coastline, indented occasionally by small bays leading to deep valleys, which lead into the interior. There are no villages on this side. The coastline of the eastern part of the island has few places to land by sea and takes the brunt of the ocean swells. The north, on the other hand, is indented by deep bays, the largest of which are Anahō and Hatihe'u. 'A'akapa bay is not as large but has a village of the same name. The south has fewer bays, among which those of Taioha'e, Taipivai, Ho'oumi, Hakaui (the last three are parts of the larger Baie du Contrôleur), and the bays of Hakau'i and Hakatea, both accessed by the same narrow entrance. We sail into Taiohae's spectacular bay, a giant volcanic amphitheater dominated by towering cliffs streaked with waterfalls. As the Aranui unloads, you can explore Taiohae, the tiny Administrative capital of the Marquesas. Taiohae Bay is where a 23-year-old sailor , He man Melville and a buddy jumped a whaling ship in 1842. We follow their escape route by jeep along steep, winding dirt mountain roads to the village of Hatiheu to visit an archeological site. We'll have lunch at Yvonne's Restaurant, one of the best restaurants in the Marquesas, where the specialty is pig baked in an underground oven. You'll meet the owner-chef, Yvonne, who also happens to be the town's energetic mayor. After lunch, we will travel to the valley of Taipivai. The area is dotted with stone tiki gods and sacred ritual sites (me'ae) and immense stone platforms (paepae) where the Taipi built their houses. Enigmatic petroglyphs of birds, sacred turtles and fish are carved on huge boulders. The Aranui's whaleboats will sail down the river to return you to the Aranui, which is anchored in the bay.

Nuku Hiva island is yet another one of French Polynesia's wonderful islands. The island was extremely clean and very well kept. Like most of the islands it was found to be rather expensive. Two bowls of ice cream and two cans of coke cost 36US$. Other than that the island is a magical place to visit.
