Au fil du Rhône 10/13 : Secrets de Vienne
Une fois n'est pas coutume, c'est dans une ville que notre périple au fil du Rhône nous emmène, celle de Vienne, située dans la Vallée du Rhône à 30 kilomètres au sud de Lyon. On la dit riche de quelque 2000 ans d'histoire, avec plus de 40 sites et monuments classés. Ce qui lui a permis, depuis 1990, d'être labellisée Ville d'art et d'histoire par le Ministère français de la Culture.

The twin towns of Tournon and Tain l'Hermitage in France nestle on each side of the Rhone river. Not only are their wines world famous but a visit to the Valrhona chocolate factory is a pleasing final stop.

Segundo a lenda, a primeira capela foi erguida na Idade Média com o nome de São Cristóvão, padroeiro dos viajantes e barqueiros. Hoje, no topo da colina de Hermitage ainda resta uma pequena capela reconstruída em 1864 sobre um dos socalcos da colina no meio das vinhas. Teria sucedido a um templo romano dedicado a Hércules e, de acordo com a tradição local, o cavaleiro Henri-Gaspard de Sterimberg teria se retirado para a colina de Tegna (Tain l'Hermitage na Antiguidade) após retornar de uma cruzada contra os Albigenses, no século 13. Ele passou o resto de sua vida em sua encosta cultivando suas vinhas para oferecê-las aos peregrinos, daí a origem da vinha de Hermitage. No interior, o altar é encimado por uma estátua com a efígie de São Cristóvão, padroeiro dos viajantes, reconhecível pelo menino Jesus que carrega nos braços. A capela é agora propriedade da casa Paul Jaboulet Aîné.

A visit to Tournon-sur-Rhône a commune in the Ardèche department in southern France where we go through a lock on the Rhone River. Tournon is on the Rhone River opposite the Tain-l'Hermitage vineyards.

Tournon-Sur-Rhone, Chocolate and Halloween in France
None of the offered AMAKristina excursions excite so we just walk around Tournon-Sur-Rhone, and across the bridge to Tain l'Hermitage. Tain is filled with wine production and chocolate. Particularly famous Valrhona Chocolate used by bakers around the world. Entrance is free and we are offered a nibble which leaves us, Not impressed.
It seems Halloween in France is as big a deal as in the US and the ship goes all out. Staff is forbidden to take off eye masks, covid masks, costumes all evening! Our long-suffering server, Richard, is close to heat stroke over dinner. (Please don't forget to Share, Like and Subscribe! Thanks...)

Tournon was one of our stops on the Uniworld Burgundy Provence river cruise we went on. Our highlights of this stop were wine tasting with beautiful views and Chef Bob getting inducted into the Wine Brotherhood which was a surprise for him!
