9 Things NOT To Do in Nigeria

There are many misconceptions about Nigeria, it's not a poor country, it has a rich culture and cuisine, and not every man there is a prince who wants to give you money. Although Lagos, Abuja, and Calabar seem like well-established tourist locations, there are a few things we should avoid doing when we visit.

1. Don't Flash The Cash.
Most places accept credit cards, so the need for cash is low. Avoid carrying cash if possible and if you have to carry cash, avoid showing it. Keep your wallet and phone in your front pockets and don't wear any expensive jewelry or watches.

2. Don't Make Assumptions.
Although most Nigerians speak English and almost half are Christians you shouldn't assume their culture is the same. Over half of Nigerians are Muslim and the Nigerian culture is an amalgamation of multiple ethnic groups.

3. Don't Forget Your Vaccines!
In addition to your routine vaccines, it is recommended that you get vaccinated for Measles, Yellow fever, Polio, Hepatitis A, Malaria, and Typhoid. It is also a good idea to carry proof of your vaccinations with you as you may be asked for this at the airport.

4. Don't Forget Your Visa.
Unless you are a citizen of a neighboring country, you are going to need a visa to enter Nigeria. Start the process at least a month before your trip because it is quite a lengthy process and requires a lot of paperwork. it is also quite expensive, so be prepared!

5. Don't Be Afraid of The Cuisine!
Nigeria offers all types of international cuisines but their own is delicious (it maybe a bit spicy!) try Bolli which is roasted Plantain Jollof rice and Suya which are spicy kebabs.

6. Don't say you Love Africa!
Nigeria is a country, Africa is a continent. Going to Nigeria and telling a Nigerian you love Africa is like going to Cuba and saying you love North America!

7. Don,t Go Out Alone At Night
Taking walks or going out clubbing alone at night is not recommended. Get a guide or befriend a local, also avoid public transport and book cabs in advance from reputable companies!

8. Don't Forget Your passport
Get photocopies of your passport to carry around with you for identification and only show the original at the airport.

9. Pack Carefully!
Make sure you pack some necessities in your hand luggage, hold luggage can be delayed or even disappear so to avoid spending days in the same clothes, put some in your carry-on bag. Pack a torch and a battery pack too, as power outages are a common occurrence.

Which country should we do next?

SOME OF AFRICA'S 10 GREAT STREET FOODS

By Avellon Williams and Ekeomah Atuonwu

A trip to a new country is incomplete without sampling the local street food. Across Africa, you can choose from more than 50 countries, each with its own delicious cuisine that will leave you spoilt for choice.

In addition to being flavorful and spicy, African street food has a long history and is very diverse, having been influenced by people of African, Latin American, European, and Asian ancestry since the time of the Pyramids of Giza.

It is through street food that you can truly get a sense of the culture and people of a particular country, which is a cuisine that is made and sold by people who called that country home.

From across the Caribbean, in Trinidad and Tobago, AEM’S Nigerian correspondent and I have compiled a list of some 10 of the best African street foods you can enjoy on any given day.

1. ATTIÉKÉ - Ivory Coast (Cote D'ivoire) ????????
The first African street food on our list is the traditional Ivorian couscous called “attiéké”. This meal is made with crushed, fermented cassava roots.

2. WAAKYE – Ghana ????????
The rice and bean meal known as waakye is currently eaten all over Ghana, despite its origins in the country’s north.
This dish can be made as desired by adding an almost infinite number of accompaniments, whether it is eaten for breakfast or lunch.

3. MAHJOUBA – Algeria ????????
The traditional pancake known as mahjouba is one of Algeria’s most well-liked street foods and also tops number three on our list of African street food.

4. SUYA – Nigeria ????????
This well-known Nigerian meal uses thin slices of beef or chicken that are highly seasoned and then roasted over open charcoal grills. It is thought to have originated among the Hausa people.

Each suya must have the dry spice mixture known as suya or yaji, which is created by mixing pulverized red peppers and peanuts. The spice mixture is adaptable and may include different extra components depending on the locale.

5. SARDINES – Morocco ????????
Sardines are one of the most popular street foods in Morocco, which also happens to be the world’s largest exporter of them.

Sardines are deep-fried after being flavored with a paste comprised of tomato, coriander, chile, garlic, paprika, cumin, olive oil, and lemon juice, and are known as Marrakech’s take on fish and chips. It comes with bread and the option of adding chips.

6. SHAWARMA – Egypt ????????
Shawarma is a delicious Middle Eastern meat dish that is marinated and spit-roasted. Its name, which refers to the rotating skewer on which the meat is cooked, is derived from the Arabic pronunciation of the Turkish word çevirme (lit. to turn; turning), which can be traced back to the Ottoman Empire era.

The main ingredients in shawarmas are lamb, turkey, chicken, beef, or a combination of these meats. The meats are slow-cooked for many hours and basted in their own juices and fat to achieve an unrivaled succulence, but the marinade is the actual key to superb shawarma.

7. NYAMA CHOMA – Kenya ????????
The unofficial national cuisine of Kenya is called nyama choma, which is Swahili for grilled meat. Across the nation, from roadside shacks to fine dining establishments, the meat is typically served roasted and is either goat or beef.

It frequently goes with regional beer and side dishes like ugali. There’s no way this wouldn’t have been on our list of best African street food. It is worth trying out whenever you visit Kenya.

8. KUSHARI – Egypt ????????
A simple yet savory national meal of Egypt, kushari is made of rice, pasta, and lentils. The word “khichri,” which describes a rice and lentil dish in Hindu, is the source of the name.

When in Egypt, it is sufficient to hunt for warm, delectable pyramids on sizable, glossy metal platters, as it is also a very well-liked street snack. Rice and tiny yellow lentils are cooked slowly in a hearty broth with crunchy fried vermicelli and butter-browned onions.

9. BRIK – Tunisia ????????
Popular Tunisian food called brik uses flaky pastry stuffed with a variety of delicious ingredients. Brik is often made using malsouqa dough, but more readily accessible phyllo pastry is frequently used in its place.
To obtain a crispy, layered texture, laminated pastry layers are typically used in the preparation of brik.

10. BUNNY CHOW – South Africa ????????
The South African bunny chow is a well-liked street food that originated in Durban, in the province of KwaZulu Natal, and has been modified by locals to suit their own culinary preferences. The Durban bunny chow is made of hollowed-out bread that is filled with spicy curry. Other options include stuffing the bread with whatever you like, including fried chips!

Meat Kebab Suya Street Food Sunyani Ghana 4K

A 4K video of the street food Meat Kebab on the Little wood avenue road at Sunyani Nkwabeng Zongo in the Bono Region of Ghana.

Kebabs refer to Middle Eastern dishes that contain grilled meat, which are sometimes placed on wooden skewers, but not always. Traditional kebabs can consist of either fish, lamb, or beef meat that are grilled on skewers with vegetables and/or fruit. They may also be grilled without skewers or prepared in a pan on the stove or in the oven. Pork versions are usually excluded due to religious reasons in Middle Eastern cooking.

Shish kebab (or shishkabob) is the Americanized version of kebabs that are usually prepared on skewers and may include chicken, beef, fish, pork, and/or vegetables.

Join me as we try some mouthwatering Suya at a popular joint near the University of Ibadan. The crowd is buzzing, and the variety of meats, from chicken to liver, promises an exciting culinary experience. I share my impressions of the Suya, comparing it to the renowned Lagos Suya.

The unique blend of sweet and spicy flavors, along with the tender meats, makes Ibadan's Suya a standout!. I had to go and see what the Ibadan street food night scene is looking like with Patootie Sparkles. ( Here is the link to her channel )
