Surbiton is a suburban area of south-west London within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Surbiton is situated next to the River Thames, 11.0 miles south west of central London. urbiton was formerly within the County of Surrey, but became part of Greater London in 1965 following the London Government Act 1963, together with many areas including neighbouring Kingston and Richmond. Surbiton possesses a mixture of Art-Deco courts, more recent residential blocks and grand 19th century townhouses blending into a sea of semi-detached 20th century housing estates.
Surbiton railway station opened in 1838, and was originally named Kingston-upon-Railway. It was only renamed Surbiton to distinguish it from the new Kingston railway station on the Shepperton branch line, which opened on 1 January 1869. The present station has an art deco façade. As a result, Kingston is now on a branch line, whereas passengers from Surbiton (smaller in comparison) can reach London Waterloo in about 15 minutes on a fast direct service; as well as places further afield, including Portsmouth and Southampton. It was once home to Surbiton Studios which were owned by Stoll Pictures, before the company shifted its main production to Cricklewood Studios.
Surbiton is served by a number of regular bus services. London Buses routes 71, 281, 406, 418, 465, K1, K2, K3 and K4 and Surrey Bus Routes 514 and 515 all serve the area. Surbiton railway station provides rail links with London (Waterloo), Surrey and Hampshire.
Surbiton station features in the 2009 film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Blood Prince, with actors Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore. Surbiton is popularly remembered as an icon of suburbia in such British television programmes as The Good Life.

10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Kingston upon Thames (hyphenated until 1965, colloquially known as Kingston) is a town in the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames, South West London, England. It is situated on the River Thames and 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Charing Cross. It is notable as the ancient market town in which Saxon kings were crowned and today is the administrative centre of the Royal Borough.
Historically in the county of Surrey, the ancient parish of Kingston became absorbed in the Municipal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, reformed in 1835. From 1893 to 2021 it was the location of Surrey County Council, extraterritorially in terms of local government administration since 1965, when Kingston became a part of Greater London.
Today, most of the town centre is part of the KT1 postcode area, but some areas north of Kingston railway station are within KT2. The United Kingdom Census 2011 recorded the population of the town (comprising the four wards of Canbury, Grove, Norbiton and Tudor) as 43,013, while the borough overall counted 175,470. Kingston is identified as a metropolitan centre in the London Plan and is one of the biggest retail centres in the UK, receiving 18 million visitors a year. It is also home to Kingston University.

This time we want to talk about the 10 best towns to live in Northern Ireland. Before we begin, we have to be quick in saying that towns in this region of the UK are generally cooler than those you would find near London, Manchester, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. However, it would be unfair to believe that they are less sophisticated. After all, towns in Northern Ireland are expected to be influenced by the cities nearby. We now invite you to pay more than usual attention to this video.
10. Portstewart
We feel so good beginning this in Portstewart. This is a small town in County Londonderry with a population of 8,003. It is a seaside resort beside Portrush. Portstewart has a good-looking harbor and scenic coastal paths that form an Atlantic promenade that leads to a two-mile beach popular with holidaymakers all year round, not just during summer. Victorian middle-class families are in love with this town as a holiday destination. It has a long, crescent-shaped seafront promenade that is sheltered by rocky headlands. Portstewart is a reasonably prosperous town. You can thus live there and make good fortunes. Most of it is contained in the Strand electoral ward which is counted as one of the most affluent areas in the region.

Castlewellan is a small town in County Down. The town in the southeast of Northern Ireland is close to the Irish Sea and beside Castlewellan Lake and Slievenaslat Mountain. It is also 11 miles southwest of Downpatrick. The town was originally designed for the Annesley Family by a French architect. As one of the 10 best towns to live in Northern Ireland, it has a wide main street running through two main squares lined with chestnut trees. One of the beautiful features of this town is Drumena Cashel, a small stone-built farmstead enclosure situated two miles southwest of Castlewellan, off the A25 road to Rathfriland. Castlewellan Forest Park and Castlewellan Lake also deserve to be mentioned in this town. Though the Castlewellan Castle is not generally open to everyone, the sight of this Scottish baronial beautiful and tranquil castle of 1856 is enough to add flavor to each day of life in the town.
8. Larne
Larne is a town with a population of 18,755 on the east coast of County Antrim. This town is a major passenger and freight roll-on roll-off port administered by Mid- and East Antrim Borough Council. It is also a civil parish in the historic barony of Glenarm Upper. Larne rose from the lowest spot during the course of The Troubles to become one of the best places to live. The significant paramilitary presence in the town has ensured the safety of residents. The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and Ulster Defense Association (UDA) are helping to ensure that it sustains the peace for which it is presently known.
7. Newtownards
Also in County Down is Newtownards, a town lying at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough. Located on the Ards Peninsula, it’s just 10 miles east of Belfast in the civil parish of Newtownards. The town with a population of 28,050 is beautified by the 100-foot Scarbo Tower overlooking it and built as a memorial to Charles Stewart, the third Marquess of Londonderry in 1857. It also has Movilla Abbey, Somme Heritage Center toward the north which is a unique attraction of international significance telling the historical reality of the Great War including its effects on the community at home.

Famous for the Good Life in the 1970s sitcom, Surbiton is commonly seen as the epitome of suburbia, earning the nickname ‘Suburbiton’. It is even arguably the world’s first commuter town brought into being by the trains, devised during the 19th Century to offer country living just a train ride away for London commuters. This is a town that issued season tickets and suffered with congested Monday morning railway services over 100 years ago!

London walk: Lock down walk Southborough – South West London/Surbiton/Surrey - narrated walk
It’s a quarantine walk in Southborough, which is part of Surbiton in South West London. As lock down continues, it’s time to take our hour of exercise walking through these tree-lined suburban roads. But not before a quick peek at my office set-up in the attic.
It was over 200 years ago that the Nash family commissioned Southborough House, designed by the architect to Buckingham Palace John Nash, to be built among the fields and uplands south of Kingston upon Thames, and that was to become one of the earliest areas of commuter town Surbiton. They couldn’t have possibly have known the changes about to occur as the key London to Southampton railway line became routed through the area and some of the first ever commuter homes came into being. Thomas Hardy was one of the 19th Century residents who took lodgings in this fast-growing area as a newlywed on the cusp of publishing Far From The Madding Crowd.

Walking in London: London walk in Kingston upon Thames town centre
This London walk takes place in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey – a 30-minute train ride from Waterloo Station. This 17-minute walk takes you from Kingston Bridge into Kingston town centre via the ancient market square, Clattern Bridge, Rose Theatre and Kingston Town Hall. I then turn down through the main shopping area to end at Kingston’s Red Telephone Boxes architectural installation. The train station to London Waterloo is just around the corner from there. Part 1 of this walk takes you along Kingston Riverside.

The two combined walks – Kingston Riverside (Part 1) and Kingston Town Centre (Part 2) - work very well in reverse, starting at the telephone boxes and ending at Ravens Ait where a pub or two is around the corner for refreshment before the return walk. Or you could continue to Surbiton (around 20 minutes) and get a train to Waterloo from there (I can provide route information or a new walking video on this). From Surbiton you can also take a train to Hampton Court (King Henry VIII) and either walk back along the tow path to Kingston (a good 30-45 minutes, especially if you are tired by then!) or take the train again. In summer, boats also run along this stretch to Kingston and Richmond.

For vlogging to camera, I use my Canon G7X Mark ii. One day I hope to buy a proper camera gimbal so as to use the Canon for the actual filming, but this will take a bit of saving up for, and then a bit of learning!
