Welcome to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya (Chechen Republic). The Chechen Republic is a Muslim majority autonomous republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia. Unfortunately it is better known for the conflicts of the 1990's and early 2000's, which earnt Gronzy the title of 'the most destroyed city on earth'. Despite the stigma, and the Foreign Office warnings, the Chechnya of today is much changed from the one that hit the headlines a couple of decades back. We went in to get a look at real life in Chechnya and find out what Russia's most infamous republic is really like.

Grozny (Chech. Sölzha-GӀala - named after the river Sunzha (Chech. Sölzha) + gӀala “city”) is a city in the North Caucasus, in the south of Russia, the capital of the Chechen Republic, the center of the Grozny district. A city of republican significance, it is not part of the district, forming the city district the city of Grozny. The city is located on both banks of the Sunzha River. The city of military glory of Russia (since April 6, 2015).
One of the largest cities in the North Caucasus: second in terms of area and third in terms of population (297 137 people in 2018, which makes up 20.39% of the republic’s population).

Grózni (em russo Гро́зный, transl. Grozny, em checheno Solj Ghaala) é a capital da Chechénia. Sua população em 2002 era de 223 mil habitantes. Situa-se nas margens do rio Sunzha, afluente da margem direita do rio Terek.Grózni foi fundada em 1818 e cresceu devagar até aos início do século XX. Mais tarde tornou-se num importante centro industrial. A cidade situa-se no centro geométrico dos campos petrolíferos da Rússia.
A cidade pode ser dividida em quatro zonas: Lenínski, Zavodskoi - ambas áreas residênciais, Staroprompslovski e Oktiábrski - onde se situa a zona industrial. Contudo, Grózni foi quase completamente destruída ou seriamente danificada durante as guerras na Chechénia.
A cidade tinha uma universidade e era a sede do clube FC Terek Grozny.
Grózni foi capturada pelo exército russo durante a primeira guerra na Chechénia, mas as operações da guerrilha a partir das montanhas conseguiu provocar a retirada daquelas em 1996. Desde a segunda guerra chechena que Grózni voltou a estar sobre controlo russo.

The Heart of Chechnya Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world. It was opened on October 17, 2008 and named after Akhmat-Hadji Kadyrov, the mufti of the unrecognized Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and the first president of the Chechen Republic.
The mosque is located on the picturesque bank of the Sunzha River, in the middle of a huge park (14 hectares) and is part of the Islamic complex, which, in addition to the mosque, includes the Russian Islamic University named after Kunta Haji and the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Czech Republic.
The mosque was built in the classical Ottoman style. The central hall of the mosque is covered with a huge dome (diameter - 16 m, height - 32 m). The height of four minarets of 63 meters each is one of the highest minarets in the south of Russia. The external and internal walls of the mosque are decorated with travertine marble, and the interior is decorated with white marble.
The area of the mosque is 5000 square meters, and the capacity is more than 10 thousand people. The same number of believers can pray in the summer gallery and square adjacent to the mosque.
The Blue Mosque in Istanbul was used as the basis of architecture.
During the construction of the mosque, the latest technologies were used.
The external and internal walls of the mosque are decorated with marble - travertine, and the interior of the temple is abundantly decorated with white marble, which is mined on the island of Marmara Adasa in the Sea of Marmara (Turkish province of Balikesir).
The masters from Turkey painted the mosque. Synthetic and natural paints with special additives were used for the pattern (the patterns were made in the style of traditional Chechen ornaments “boosts”), due to which, according to experts, the mosque will retain its color scheme for the next 50 years. To write patterns and ayahs (texts) from the Koran, the masters used a high-grade gold dusting.
The mosque has 36 chandeliers. In their forms, they resemble three shrines of Islam - 27 of them imitate the Kubbatu-as-Sahra mosque in Jerusalem, 8 are modeled on the Rovzatu-Nevevi mosque in Medina, and the largest, 8-meter-long chandelier repeats the Kaaba shrine in Mecca in shape. The creation of the collection took several tons of bronze, 2.5 kg of gold of the highest standard and more than 1 million details. Chandeliers have a Chechen ornament, which was specially selected by designers. Chandeliers are made of Swarovski crystals by the Turkish company USTUN AVIZE.
The prayer niche in the wall of the mosque is the mihrab (8 meters high and 4.6 meters wide), made of white marble, facing Mecca, indicating the direction to the faithful during prayer. The niche itself creates the illusion of an infinite deepening of intersecting spaces. Inside the mosque, the art of calligraphy is used. Ayats from the Koran are skillfully woven into the general ornament of the architectural decoration of the mosque. The vault of the main dome of the mosque is crowned with surah 112 “Ihlas” (purification), which translates as “He is Allah, the one, Allah is eternal. He did not give birth and was not born, and there is no one equal to Him. ”
The lighting concept of the Grozny mosque was made of three levels. The first level is flood lighting, providing even illumination of the lower part of the structure and minarets. The second level is accent lighting of the architectural elements of the building. The third level is festive lighting. Such a lighting solution allows you to visually raise the height of the minarets and make dynamic lighting on the central dome.
The useful area of the mosque is 5000 m², the height of the minarets is 63 meters. The total area of the Islamic center is 14 hectares.
The temple building has increased seismic resistance. Several fountains have been installed in the adjacent territory, places for rest, alleys have been broken.

The Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque (Russian: Мечеть Ахмата Кадырова, is located in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. The masjid is one of the largest in Russia and is officially known as The Heart of Chechnya
The masjid is named after Akhmad Kadyrov, the first president of the Republic of Chechnya and father to the current president of the Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. The construction of the mosque was commissioned by the mayor of the Turkish city of Konya. The masjid's design includes a set of 62-metre (203 ft)-tall minarets which are based upon those of the early seventeenth century Sultan Ahmed Mosque (known also as the Blue Mosque) in Istanbul.
On October 16, 2008, the mosque was officially opened in a ceremony in which Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov appeared and conversed with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
The mosque is located on the picturesque banks of the Sunzha River in the middle of a huge park (14 hectares) and is part of an Islamic architectural complex, which in addition to the mosque, consists of the Russian Islamic University, the Kunta-Haji, and the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Republic of Chechnya.
