NH: Concord, State Capital

The New Hampshire State House is the oldest state capitol in which both houses of the legislature meet in their original chambers.

We had a very good guide. She explained New Hampshire House is truly a “citizens legislature” with 400 members, it’s one of the most accessible in the country.

To be a New Hampshire Congress person, one must be a resident of New Hampshire for two years and be at least 18 years of age.

A conngress person receives just $100 per year as compensation! It’s not much, but then again, the low rate tends to keep career politicians out and minimizes the burden on taxpayers.

The New Hampshire Senate has been meeting since 1784. It consists of 24 members representing Senate districts based on population. Currently, there are 14 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

The Senate has to complete the work assigned on a particular day and must do so before the end of the day. If more time is needed, the clock in the room will be stopped at 12:00 AM and reset to regular time once the work completes.

Capital of the Granite State | Concord, NH

We're at it again in New Hampshire, however today we get to explore a different region of the state. The Merrimack Valley, as it's called, covers a large area of south-central New Hampshire where its namesake river runs before entering Massachusetts. Here is where one will find the most well known Granite State cities and where the population density is the highest. Among the places calling this region home, the third largest city of this beautiful New England state, Concord is our latest capital city to be visited on the Coverage Project. Our 10th capital city already? Hard to believe it but it's true! With a history spanning more than three and a half centuries and holding the seat of New Hampshire's government for over 200 years, this city of over 43,000 people has held much prominence and influence within the cultural sphere of New England. What's more, Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States, even lived in Concord for a number of years prior to his presidency. Today, we make haste to discover all the places of importance to this city's and the greater New Hampshire culture. We also come across a surprise festival in the downtown area that not even I knew about in advance! There's something really soothing about experiencing the sophisticated vibe of a capital city combined with the humble, colonial appeal of New England culture. Not often might this be the case, so see for yourselves right here in Concord, New Hampshire!

Amherst, New Hampshire Town Tour

- Exemplifying the town's colonial flair, Amherst's centerpiece is the Village Green. Visitors strolling past beautiful colonial-era homes and the magnificent town center, can feel the town's deep sense of history. One of only two towns in the country listed in its entirety as a Historic District, Amherst exemplifies late 18th- and early 19th-century architecture and charm.

The homes of Amherst signify appreciation for the heritage of the town, a heritage that goes back to its early days as a Narragansett township. At that time, land was granted by the state of Massachusetts for service rendered in the Narragansett wars. From this grant, Amherst began as part of Dunstable, Massachusetts, then became Dunstable, New Hampshire, and finally Amherst.Recreational facilities include several golf courses, tennis courts, and an outdoor skating rink. Baboosic Lake is available for swimming, boating, and fishing, while the 375-acre Joe English Reservation is a favorite for hiking and cross-country skiing. Annual local festivities include the annual lighting of the Christmas tree on the Village Green, the Fourth of July Parade, and the Amherst Antique Show and Sale in September.

While home prices here are higher, the town supports an excellent educational system, which includes the award-winning Souhegan High School.

Manchester, New Hampshire city tour

- Manchester is the state's commercial and industrial leader, as well as its largest city and the home of nearly 10 percent of its population. The city first gained national fame in the 1800s as the home of the massive textile mill of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Nearly 5 million yards of cloth were shipped weekly from the mill, which employed thousands of workers and covered more than 8 million square feet. The mill thrived until the 1920s, when competition from southern mills and obsolete technology took their toll. In 1935, Amoskeag went bankrupt. Despite losing its major employer,

Manchester rebuilt itself as a commercial and industrial center by diversifying industries. Today it is home to a melting pot of high tech companies, banks, business services

enterprises, retailers, manufacturers and health care professionals. Commerce is just one part of Manchester's appeal. The city is also the focal point of the state's cultural community and home to many of the region's eight colleges and universities. Cultural institutions such as the Currier Gallery of Art and Palace Theatre join with the new Verizon Wireless Arena and outdoor concert venues to attract world-class performers and exhibits to the city. Performances, exhibits, classes, workshops and lectures are offered to the general public at many of the area's institutions of higher education. Other city attractions include the Manchester Historic Association, Franco-American Centre and the SEE Science Center.

Concord is the capital city of the U.S. state of New Hampshire and the county seat of Merrimack County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 42,695, and, in 2020, the population was an estimated 43,924.

The village of Penacook, where Concord was initially settled, lies at the northern boundary of the city limits. The city is home to the University of New Hampshire School of Law, New Hampshire's only law school; St. Paul's School, a private preparatory school; NHTI, a two-year community college; the New Hampshire Police Academy; and the New Hampshire Fire Academy. Concord's Old North Cemetery is the final resting place of Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States.

The area that would become Concord was originally settled thousands of years ago by Abenaki Native Americans called the Pennacook. The tribe fished for migrating salmon, sturgeon, and alewives with nets strung across the rapids of the Merrimack River. The stream was also the transportation route for their birch bark canoes, which could travel from Lake Winnipesaukee to the Atlantic Ocean. The broad sweep of the Merrimack River valley floodplain provided good soil for farming beans, gourds, pumpkins, melons and maize.

The area was first settled in 1659 as Penacook. On January 17, 1725, the Province of Massachusetts Bay, which then claimed territories west of the Merrimack River, granted the Concord area as the Plantation of Penacook. It was settled between 1725 and 1727 by Captain Ebenezer Eastman and others from Haverhill, Massachusetts. On February 9, 1734, the town was incorporated as Rumford, from which Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford would take his title. It was renamed Concord in 1765 by Governor Benning Wentworth following a bitter boundary dispute between Rumford and the town of Bow; the city name was meant to reflect the new concord, or harmony, between the disputant towns. Citizens displaced by the resulting border adjustment were given land elsewhere as compensation. In 1779, New Pennacook Plantation was granted to Timothy Walker Jr. and his associates at what would be incorporated in 1800 as Rumford, Maine, the site of Pennacook Falls.

Concord grew in prominence throughout the 18th century, and some of the earliest houses from this period survive at the northern end of Main Street. In the years following the Revolution, Concord's central geographical location made it a logical choice for the state capital, particularly after Samuel Blodget in 1807 opened a canal and lock system to allow vessels passage around the Amoskeag Falls downriver, connecting Concord with Boston by way of the Middlesex Canal. In 1808, Concord was named the official seat of state government. The 1819 State House is the oldest capitol in the nation in which the state's legislative branches meet in their original chambers. The city would become noted for furniture-making and granite quarrying. In 1828, Lewis Downing joined J. Stephens Abbot to form Abbot and Downing. Their most famous product was their Concord coach, widely used in the development of the American West. In the 19th century, Concord became a hub for the railroad industry, with Penacook a textile manufacturing center using water power from the Contoocook River. Today, the city is a center for health care and several insurance companies.

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE Drone Video Tour

Welcome to New Hampshire's colorful capital city! This burgeoning town of more than 43,000 Concordians was home to the 14th President, Franklin Pierce, whose house you can tour while visiting (it's the Pierce Manse in this video). While here, check out the other sites in this video, including the State House, Legislative Office Building, State Library, Department of Justice, McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, NH Technological Institute, NH Historical Society, and the awesome array of shops in the city's commercial center.

More than one thousand years ago, a strong Native American people called Penacook inhabited present day Concord. In 1726, the English colonized the area, calling the town Rumford. The city earned its new name in 1765 after a bitter land dispute between the towns Rumford and Bow struck a concord. Concord was named capitol of New Hampshire in 1807, after Sam Blodget opened a canal there to allow logging boats from the Amoskeag Falls area to reach the Boston docks.

This town revolutionized America by contributing the Concord Stagecoach, which was the #1 way people traveled west during the American Manifest Destiny years. Another contributor to American science is teacher and astronaut, Christa McAuliffe, who died in the space shuttle Challenger disaster January 28, 1986. The city's science museum and planetarium are named after her and Admiral Alan Shepard.

Liquid Planet History | A Story of False Promises, False Advertising, and an Eccentric Owner

Liquid Planet was a small water park in Candia, New Hampshire that closed in 2015. The state shut the park down after finding bacteria and fecal contamination in the water and opening two speed slides without state approval. The park amassed nearly $1.5 million in debt and the owner chained himself to the slide complex in protest.

The park's website is still active with some interesting marketing claims. It advertises the world's tallest water slide, some attractions clearly not at the park, and even free tickets.

The park was sold to Jeff Woodward in 2016, who owns the highly popular Whale's Tale water park. The park has since been rebranded and revitalized as the Candia Springs Adventure Park.
