Day of the Dead, Giant Kite Festival | Sumpango, Guatemala

[ Video shot and edited by Dan Perez Films ]
The magnificent Giant Kite Festival takes place every year on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Sumpango, Guatemala. The practice of flying kites during the Day of the Dead goes back several thousand years. It is believed that the kite (or barrilete) creates a connection of communication between the spirits of the dead and their families here on Earth.
In Sumpango, kite makers (barrileteros) work for months from after work to late in the evening to prepare the kites (some as large as 20 meters) for the festival, which takes place on November 1.
The kites resemble giant paintings, similar to a giant mural you would see in Miami's Wynwood Art District or the Bushwick Collective in New York. They are made, however, using layers of hand-cut, colored paper, the same type of thin paper used to line gift boxes(!). The kites are then folded up and taken to the festival where they are fastened to large bamboo poles for display or for flying. I traveled to Sumpango this year with my teenage daughter to capture a few images from this remarkable festival with my Lumix GH4.
Enjoy.

You Have To See These Fascinating Places in Guatemala ❤️ | Curiosity Juice | Country Tour #69

You will definitely would wish to travel to Guatemala after watching this video. Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites.

Maya ruins are the key attractions in the country and the most notable are El Mirador, perhaps the cradle of Maya civilisation, and Tikal.

Cities and towns
Guatemala City — Capital and largest city with many amenities
Antigua Guatemala — Colonial Spanish capital of Central America, a World Heritage site, and the most popular among tourists
Flores — Island capital of Petén, good starting point to access Mayan ruins of Tikal.
Melchor de Mencos — Border town which is the main crossing point to Belize
Panajachel — Gateway to Lake Atitlán, a beautiful and busy tourist area
Puerto Barrios — Caribbean seaport with speedboats to and from Belize
Puerto San José — Pacific seaport
Quetzaltenango — Second largest city, in the western highlands. Commonly called Xela.
Sayaxché — River gateway in Petén
Coban — Town with a rich culture and a great launching point to travel to Semuc Champay

Key Destinations
Lake Atitlán — Beautiful lake region in the mountains surrounded by many picturesque villages and volcanoes, which is becoming more and more touristic
Monterrico — The beach closest to Guatemala City and Antigua, volcanic sand.
Semuc Champey — Stunning natural monument in the heart of the Mayan world, located about 11 km from the town of Lanquín. Trips usually include a few hours in the local river cave system, a hike to the lookout point above Semuc Champey, and the opportunity to swim in the pools.
Rio Dulce — Known as a ‘one of a kind’ ecological and cultural heritage for humanity, and home of one of the largest bridges in Central America, the area surrounding this emerald Sweet River has many sites to see and things to do. From jungle hikes to the Hot Springs Waterfalls (Rio Dulce is home to Finca Paraiso), visiting Castillo San Felipe de Lara, sailing & water sports, seeing the colourful, friendly surrounding villages & landscapes to taking a Lancha tour through the Majestic Canyon from Livingston. There are plenty of places to stay, including some sweet spots right on the water. Rio Dulce is also a huge hub of access to not only places within Guatemala, such as Antigua, Tikal, Cobán, Semuc Champey and more, but is equally a point of access to the surrounding countries of Belize, Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Maya ruins
El Mirador — massive early Maya site, perhaps the cradle of Maya civilization. Still being uncovered and studied; less developed for visitors than the other largest Maya sites.
Tikal — long considered the largest of Maya ruins (although the ongoing investigations of El Mirador may challenge this claim), this huge and impressive ancient Maya site is probably worth the trip to Guatemala by itself. Stay in the park or in nearby Flores the night before in order to organise a early morning trip to Tikal, to see the sun rise over the ruins. Tours are easily organised from the surrounding areas.
Aguateca — some of the best-preserved Mayan ruins in Guatemala where you are more likely to encounter archaeologists at work than tourists with cameras
El Peru (Waká) — a three day trek/boat trip from Flores and identified as the source of many looted Maya artefacts
Iximché — ruins in the Central Highlands, an easy day trip from Guatemala City or Antigua.
Nakúm — an impressive Classic Maya site
Yaxhá — ruins with more than 500 structures, between Flores and Melchor de Mencos

Did I miss any place? Let me know in the comments below :D

Santa Cruz La Laguna LAKE ATITLAN | GUATEMALA Travel Video Guide | Maya Village, Volcano View & Food

Travel with us to Santa Cruz La Laguna Lake Atitlan Guatemala! In this Guatemala Travel Video Guide we show you this Maya village which offers the best lake and volcano view, delicious Guatemala food, local culture and colourful street art murals.

Santa Cruz Guatemala, located next to Lago de Atitlan is a charming and peaceful village overlooking the gorgeous lake and the three majestic volcanoes: Volcano San Pedro, Volcano Tolimán and Volcano Atitlán. See them in this Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Vlog!

We explore this Guatemalan Maya village three times. It could be the best place Guatemala offers. We have our drone with us. The local kids love it! If you want to travel Guatemala 2020 we recommend you to consider bringing a drone to capture this beautiful country from the air.

To watch all our #dreamytravelstory #guatemala videos check out our Guatemala Travel Vlog 2020 playlist:

Santa Cruz La Laguna is situated on the steep mountainside of #lakeatitlan in the western highlands of Guatemala. The indigenous Maya of Santa Cruz are part of the Kaq’chikel ethnic group.

You reach Santa Cruz La Laguna by taking a boat or hiking Lake Atitlan trails. From the dock to the main village of Santa Cruz you can either take a tuk tuk or walk.

We visit CECAP in Santa Cruz La Laguna, which has an important role in the town, and we highly recommend you to visit it. Here you find Amigos de Santa Cruz, a non-profit organization educating and empowering the Santa Cruz community.

If you would like to go shopping in Guatemala Manos Cruceñas artisan store is the place. Indigenous Mayan women artisans from Santa Cruz offer beautiful handmade products with the most stunning view over the lake.

You also find a rooftop restaurant Café Sabor Cruceño which is run by young CECAP Culinary Program graduates. Delicious Guatemala food with beautiful view! We visit this Lake Atitlan restaurant three times.

We bring our new friends and fellow YouTubers Matt & Marti, which are also our neighbours here at Lake Atitlan, to a special buffet event at Café Sabor Cruceño. We are both staying in Airbnbs on the hill between San Pedro and San Juan. We decide to end our amazing day here in Santa Cruz La Laguna with our friends drinking some Guatemalan craft beer at La Iguana Perdida!

We are spending more than one month on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and also according to many people the best place in Central America. It lies in a caldera, formed by a volcano eruption.

I Went to a Kite Festival in Guatemala

Tapping the THANKS button under the video is a MASSIVE help in supporting this channel. Thank you for your support!

I went to the Sumpango Kite Festival in Sumango, Guatemala (about an hour away from the popular tourist destination, Antigua). This festival usually coincides with Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebrations on the first two days of November but, due to the weather, it was postponed to the week after.

If you're in Guatemala during this time, it's definitely worth checking out. Most hostels or hotels can organize an easy and convenient bus for you to take, which costs about $15 USD and picks you up at either 7am or 10am, depending on your preference.

Once you get there, plan on staying until about 4pm, eating plenty of delicious street food, taking a bunch of photos and videos of all the amazing and gigantic kites, and buying some souvenirs and gifts.

Here is a Link Tree to many of the things I've mentioned in my other videos:

Day of the Death 2018

Incredible Drone Video about the Giant Kites Festival in Sumpango, Guatemala.
That is how people in Guatemala celebrate the day of the death in Sumpango Guatemala.

According to Guatemalan culture, flying a kite is a way to honor and get closer to your lost loved ones. In Sumpango, north of Antigua, they take it so seriously that they build up giant kites, so big that they can’t even fly!

Thanks to our friend Joaquin of Cuscun for the experience!

Giant Kite Festival 2016 Sumpango, Sacatepequez Guatemala. Regarded as No. 1 among the most beautiful and impressive International Kite Festivals.

In this video Noctis, the charismatic and legendary black puppy with white paws, my great friend of the soul, which already has its own giant kite with his face.

This colorful ancestral Festival is celebrated on 1st November of each year to commemorate the Day of All Saints. The main message of these kites is respect for Mother Earth, all Nature and all its creatures. Likewise, respect for the rights of children, women and the guatemalan traditions. Legends say that flying kites is a way to get closer to our loved ones who have left this world and deliver our messages to them, plus the sound that kites produce with the wind, drives away spirits that cause discomfort.

Sumpango Festival is considered as Cultural Patrimony of Guatemala and has many local and foreign visitors.
So ¡TIME TO FLY!
