Places to see in ( Ayr - UK )

Places to see in ( Ayr - UK )

Ayr is a large town and former Royal Burgh situated on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland, United Kingdom. It is the administrative centre of the South Ayrshire Council area and historic county town of Ayrshire. Ayr is currently the most populated settlement in Ayrshire and is the 12th most populous settlement in Scotland. The town adjoins the smaller town of Prestwick to the north, forming a single continuous urban area with the town.

Ayr was established as a Royal Burgh in 1205, serving as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the Medieval Period and remaining a well-renowned port across the Early Modern Period. On the southern bank of the River Ayr sits the ramparts of a Citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell during the mid-17th Century. Towards the south of the town is the birthplace of Scottish poet Robert Burns in the suburb of Alloway. With the expansion of the railway during the 19th Century Ayr soon developed into a seaside resort. This remains the case today with tourism occupying a significant sect of the local economy in Ayr through the opening of a Butlin's holiday park on the southern headlands of the town and through the continued presence of the Gaiety Theatre, which ran various shows across the late 20th century attracting performers from across the United Kingdom.

Politically, Ayr is considerably more Conservative-voting than the remainder of Scotland, being represented by a Conservative MP continuously for a period of 91 years – from 1906 (as part of the Ayr Burghs constituency) until 1997. The town forms part of the Ayr constituency in the Scottish Parliament, the first Conservative constituency seat in the Parliament, which has been represented by Conservative MSP John Scott since a by-election in 2000. In the UK Parliament Ayr is situated within the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency.

Ayr is one of the largest retail centres along the south of Scotland and was recognised as the second healthiest town centre in the United Kingdom by the Royal Society for Public Health in 2014. Ayr has hosted the Scottish Grand National horse-racing steeplechase annually since 1965. The town also accommodates the headquarters of the Ayr Advertiser and Ayrshire Post newspapers and the West FM radio station.

The Ayr railway station has regular services to Glasgow Central station, Edinburgh Waverley, Stranraer, Girvan and Kilmarnock]. All services are operated by Abellio ScotRail. The town is served by the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport just 2 miles (3 km) north from Ayr, which offers regional and domestic air services across Europe and the British Isles. Ayr is served by three major motorway systems.

Clan Kennedy Castle On Visit To Ayrshire Scotland

As requested by a subscriber, Tour Scotland travel video of Culzean Castle, a Scottish castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Maybole, Carrick, with Scottish music, on visit to the Ayrshire coast. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy. Culzean Castle was constructed as an L-plan castle by order of the 10th Earl of Cassilis. He instructed the architect Robert Adam to rebuild a previous, but more basic, structure into a fine country house to be the seat of his earldom. The castle was built in stages between 1777 and 1792.Dwight D. Eisenhower first visited Culzean Castle in 1946 and stayed there four times, including once while President of the United States.

The surname Kennedy was first found in Ayrshire, Gaelic: Siorrachd Inbhir Àir, formerly a county in the southwestern Strathclyde region of Scotland, that today makes up the Council Areas of South, East, and North Ayrshire, where the earliest record of them dates from 1185, during the reign of King William the Lion, when a Henry Kennedy was reported to have been involved in a rebellion in Galloway but died in battle. The Kennedys derived from a branch of Celtic Earls of Galloway, not to be confused with Galway, which is in Ireland. Their power and influence in that region was great. In fact, there is a rhyme handed down through clansmen and bards from the year 1300 which runs as follows: Twixt Wigtown and the town of Ayr, Portpatrick and the Cruives of Cree. No man need think to bide there, unless he court with Kennedy.

Day 21 Scottish Road Trip: Edinburgh to Lisbellaw via Dunlop 07/04

A real time drive around the coastline of the United Kingdom - Day 13

Join us as we make our 5,108 mile real time drive by road, around the coastline of the United Kingdom. Full disclosure – we haven’t completed Northern Ireland yet but when we do we’ll add that to the total mileage.

The intention was to take the longest possible route, driving as close to the coast as possible and never using a Motorway! We tried to see as much of our coastline as we could.

The journey had some dark and drizzly days to begin with, but many were sunny and truly beautiful, especially the west coast of Scotland.

The journey took about 30 full days to complete. Our campervan ‘Minty’ served us very well; he is a 2005 Timberland Independence with a 2.8L Fiat Ducato manual gearbox.

In order to find the route closest to the coast we needed to use Google Maps, hence the constant verbal navigation by whomever wasn’t driving. Oh, and sorry about Bev’s occasional swearing!

On days 1 and 2 we learned that even in UK conditions the GoPro Hero 9 could not handle 4k and overheated a number of times, hence the occasional editing fades and the noise produced by the vents trying to cool the camera. We resolved this by changing to 1080p and had no further overheating and therefore very few edits.

I gave lots of thought to producing silent videos or to leave all voice and background noise in and unedited. If you don’t like our noise, please turn us down!

We had lockdowns, breakdowns, flat tyres, closed roads, golf courses, the occasional wrong turn and all manner of friendly disagreements but, overall, we loved the adventure.

It’s a long ride, so buckle up!!

Jon, Bev and Charlie

‘Random Journeys: New Zealand’ by Trevor Cree. (eBook £1.99 + VAT) (Non-Fiction)

‘The concept of travelling in a random manner is not new but what if the 5, 10 or 50 places to be visited have been chosen by drawing letters of the alphabet from a hat to identify the first letters of each location? And then and only then are the actual place names revealed and their location on the map identified. And to add a necessary degree of discipline each and every place must be visited however uninteresting or remote it may seem to be. No convenient substitutions allowed, no deletions, no ifs or buts. A recipe for disaster surely? At least a waste of precious time and precious funds?’

Sometimes their paths interact with each other in unexpected ways and strangers may become friends, lovers and even victims in an environment which can show its many faces within a single day. ` Set against the backdrop of the majestic Southern Alps 'Track' follows the story of three such people and the relic of an earlier era, Te Rana.
