Olympia is the state capital of Washington, and it's is one of the most popular tourist draws in the Pacific Northwest. While Portland and Seattle might be bigger cities, and they certainly get most of the attention, they can't compete with the small-town college vibe that Olympia has going for it. It's a cultural hub that is a breeding ground for artists and musicians and has a culinary scene that is downright incredible.

Forget whatever you think you might know about Olympia because unless you've been there, you really can't real idea of what it's like. Even so, we'll do our best to describe its best features in this roughly 8-minute long video.

Olympia sits at the southern tip of the Puget Sound, where the Deschutes River meets saltwater and features the breathtakingly beautiful and majestic Mt. Rainier off in the distance, one of the most impressive mountains in the region.

The city is also historically significant. Because of this fact, it has some of the best landmarks in the entire state. There are many fun and thrilling attractions to visit that are well-suited for just about anyone regardless of their interests.

The Evergreen State College can be found in Olympia and its campus is worth visiting even if you have no plans on attending. Olympia has been endearingly nicknamed Oly by its inhabitants, and it's known for being a lively, diversified, and beautiful city.

Olympia has a lively waterfront district and a historically significant downtown. The weather is mild, and temperatures rarely ever fall below freezing even in the coldest winter months. Although if you do plan on visiting during this season, you might want to consider packing a rain jacket as it can get a little bit wet. But even on the rainiest days, you'll have plenty of indoor activities to choose from as Olympia is home to a number of museums, shopping centers, and top-tier restaurants.

Fort Steilacoom Park has become a regional draw boasting more than 1 million visitors annually. . “It is also rich in history. The park, and surrounding land that is now developed, was used by the Nisqually and Steilacoom Indian tribes as a food source and gathering place before settlers and fur traders moved into the region.
The park property also was the site of a military fort in the 19th century and was used as farmland that was cultivated by patients at nearby Western State Hospital.

Road Tour Drive of Lakewood & Steilacoom, Washington - Steilacoom Blvd. - Scenic View of Puget Sound

The drive starts in the Tacoma suburb of Lakewood and ends in the small coastal town of Steilacoom, which sits on Puget Sound.

LAKEWOOD

Lakewood was officially incorporated on February 28, 1996. Historical names include Tacoma/Lakewood Center and Lakes District (this name was used by the U.S. Census in the 1970 and 1980 Census). Lakewood is the second-largest city in Pierce County and is home to the Clover Park School District, the Lakewood Water District, Fort Steilacoom Park and Western State Hospital, a regional state psychiatric hospital. Thornewood Castle was built in the vicinity of Tacoma in the area that is now Lakewood.

STEILACOOM

The Steilacoom people, a Coast Salish tribe, lived in what became the city of Steilacoom. Their main village was called Scht’ləqʷəm, later anglicized as Steilacoom. William Bright says the name comes from the Southern Coast Salish subgroup /č'tílqʷəbš/, anglicized as Steilacoom. European-American settlement at Steilacoom began with Lafayette Balch, a sea captain from Maine, and the town was officially incorporated in 1854. It is the oldest incorporated town in Washington. It has four individual buildings and sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the oldest Catholic Church in the state, the first Protestant Church north of the Columbia River, as well as the Steilacoom Historic District, with 68 contributing properties.
Steilacoom's main source of early prosperity was the processing and export of lumber to San Francisco. When the United States Congress established the Washington Territory on March 2, 1853, Governor Isaac Stevens chose Steilacoom as the seat of Pierce County. Steilacoom had the first jail in Washington and the first sawmill. The City of Lakewood has developed next to it, and the city is home to one of the two major state-run mental health facilities, Western State Hospital, on the site of what was once Fort Steilacoom.

Best Sunset At Saltar's Point (Secret Beach) Steilacoom, WA

I got lucky on this day and caught one of best sunsets at Saltar's Point Beach in Steilacoom, WA I have ever seen! This beach is kind of a secret because of its location but it has some of the best views of the sound especially at sunset. And if you like watching trains you can get great views from the bridge and also from the beach and a few go by an hour. Saltars Beach is my favorite beach in the Puget Sound.
