Family Simm - Steffisburg Rundweg

Steffisburg is a small town a short ride from Thun in the Bernese Oberland. It is nestled in the foot hills of the Swiss Alps.

The Rundweg (circular way) is about 7km long and tales around 2 hours. It follows the Zulg river for the first half before climbing 200m and returning towards Steffisburg. The climb in the middle can be a bit difficult if it has been raining, which when we did the walk it had been raining for days. The climb can be quite muddy underfoot in this situation so good footwear and polls would be advisable. In the dry it should be fairly easy.

There is a Hofladen just after the climb offering dried meats and apple juice which was appreciated during our walk.

On returning to Steffisburg there are several restaurants offering lunchtime deals at good prices. We visited Restaurant Bären which prides itself on sustainability. We had soup and fish goujons with polenta. All home made a very delicious.

Thun Switzerland - Discover The Hidden Secrets of This Beautiful City | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Thun is an excellent destination to travel to if you want to admire the beauty of nature in Switzerland. It is conveniently located in the centre of the Bernese Oberland region and it is a perfect mix of lake and mountain amidst mild weather that lasts well into autumn.

Thun’s most recognizable landmark is the Thun Castle, also known as “Schloss Thun”. With history going back all the way to when the first settlers arrived in the city in 2,500 B.C, this building has a lot of stories to tell. The castle’s fortification tower was built in 1180 and since then it has been converted into a museum with over five floors of cultural development. It houses historic artifacts from around 4,000 years, as well as medieval objects, weapons and uniforms from the 18th and 19th century. There is also the magnificent Knight’s Hall, restored in modern times but dating back to the 12th century.

The Old Town in Thun perfectly compliments the castle. With its raised pavements and museums you’ll feel like you have stepped back in time. In a way, the Old Town is highly traditional with the town church dating back to 1330, and the town hall erected in the 16th century. However, Thun has also caught up with modern times, as there are a few brand new cinemas in the town and many restaurants offering local and international cuisine. The top activity here, though, is shopping – with almost 1,000 shops offering anywhere from watches, sports equipment, and clothes to souvenirs, handicrafts, and art objects.

Geography

The historic city center is not directly on Lake Thun, but about 1.5 kilometers away on the Aare . The inner city consists of the Schlossberg, the lower town, the upper Hauptgasse and the Bälliz . The castle and the town church are on the castle hill . The Bälliz is an island in the Aare at the outlet of Lake Thun and has belonged to the city since the 14th century. It has been a pedestrian zone since 1988 . Today it is not only the most important shopping and market street in the city, but also the cultural island and center as well as a popular promenade.

The new city districts are located on the alluvial plain at the north-west end of Lake Thun, which was raised by the Kander before it was diverted into the lake in 1714.

While in the north the neighboring municipality of Steffisburg with the district of Schwäbis borders directly on the city centre, the municipality of Thun extends much further in the south and includes the former villages of Dürrenast and parts of Gwatt along the left bank of the lake , which today belong to the closed settlement area of the city. In the west of the community are the Lerchenfeld district , the Allmend , which is now primarily used as a military training area, and the Allmendingen district . In the east, the municipality extends into the hills and includes the village of Goldiwil. The Hünibach district on the right bank of the lake, which has grown together with the town, no longer belongs to Thun but to the municipality of Hilterfingen .
