10 days, 7100km train journey across Australia, Cairns to Perth by rail

This is my ultimate guide to train travel in Australia. I spent 10 days in late June to travel over 7100km from Cairns to Perth via Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Cairns is the north-most railway station in Australia that is still regularly served by a government-run long-distance not-for-profit passenger train, and Perth is the western end of Australia’s standard gauge rail network. I would like to summarise and compare the different passenger trains in Australia in one video before I move on and show you the train journeys in other parts of the world. I hope you will enjoy the video. Let's go!

Historical Images : Gold Rush Era - Victoria Australia

The Victorian gold rush was a period in the history of Victoria, Australia approximately between 1851 and the late 1860s. It led to a period of extreme prosperity for the Australian colony, and an influx of population growth and financial capital for Melbourne, which was dubbed Marvellous Melbourne as a result of the procurement of wealth.

(A link to help you find GOLD today)

In the 1850s gold discoveries in Victoria, in Beechworth, Castlemaine, Daylesford, Ballarat and Bendigo sparked gold rushes similar to the California Gold Rush. At its peak, some two tonnes of gold per week flowed into the Treasury Building in Melbourne.

With the exception of the more extensive fields of California, for a number of years the gold output from Victoria was greater than in any other country in the world. Victoria's greatest yield for one year was in 1856, when 3,053,744 troy ounces (94,982 kg) of gold were extracted from the diggings. From 1851 to 1896 the Victorian Mines Department reported that a total of 61,034,682 oz (1,898,391 kg) of gold was mined in Victoria.

The rushes left Victorian architecture in towns in the Goldfields region such as Maldon, Beechworth, Clunes, Heathcote, Maryborough, Daylesford, Stawell, Beaufort, Creswick, St Arnaud, Dunolly, Inglewood, Wedderburn and Buninyong whose economy has differing emphases on home working, tourism, farming, modern industrial and retired sectors. With the exception of Ballarat and Bendigo, many of these towns were substantially larger than they are today. Most populations moved to other districts when gold played out in a given locality.[8] At the other end of the spectrum ghost towns, such as Walhalla, Mafeking and Steiglitz exist.

Australia: going back from Stawell

Going to Hall's Gap from Stawell on one of the marvellous Australian road.

HORSHAM / GIANT KOALA / HORSHAM VICTORIA / HORSHAM RIVERSIDE CARAVAN PARK / VANLIFE / G'DAY PARKS

#horsham
#GiantKoala
#campingvictoria

In this episode, we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, with our dog, to Horsham Victoria, Australia. We camped at Horsham Riverside Caravan Park Victoria, which I show you around in this episode.

Below lists the places we visited in this episode.
Horsham Riverside Caravan
The Giant Koala
Horsham Regional Art Gallery
Horsham Botanic Gardens
Silo Art
Myth Making exhibition

Horsham is the largest city in the Wimmera wheat growing and sheep grazing district in western Victoria. It is located between Stawell and Dimboola, on the main highway linking Melbourne and Adelaide. Horsham features a large commercial centre that lines much of Firebrace Street and extends into adjoining streets. Located within the town centre are a number of cultural attractions including the Horsham Art Gallery which specialises in Australian photography, and several performing arts venues.
There are several attractive parks and gardens in Horsham such as the Horsham Botanic Gardens, towards the southern end of Firebrace The Botanic Gardens, were established in 1873 and occupy a 16-hectare site along the northern side of the Wimmera River and consist of formal gardens, wetlands, shaded lawns, woodlands, a lake and recreational facilities.

Surrounding Horsham are vast wheat fields, pastoral land, and colourful fields of wildflowers. To the south-east, along the Western Highway, are the Wimmera Lakes which form part of the Wimmera-Mallee irrigation system. Green Lake, on the southern side of the highway, has a picnic area overlooking the lake and includes a boat ramp, jetty and swimming beach. Taylors Lake, a few kilometres north of the highway, is a recreational lake suitable for fishing, boating and swimming.

Horsham is a handy base to explore the region's nearby natural attractions. The northern extremity of the Grampians National Park is located 25 kilometres south-east of Horsham, while the the Little Desert National Park can be accessed via a number of small towns to the west and north-west. Mount Arapiles, less than 35 kilometres west of Horsham via Natimuk, is widely regarded as one of the top rock-climbing areas in Australia and is also a great location for bushwalking and camping.

Horsham Riverside Caravan Park
Horsham Riverside Caravan Park has a wonderful mix of outdoor activities in a range of wide open spaces. With cultural, recreational and leisure activities close to town, they’re perfectly situated to offer quality family accommodation at affordable rates in the Horsham area. They are per friendly too!

We also visit the Giant Koala, which is situated midway between Stawell and Horsham. The Giant Koala is one of Australia’s iconic “Big Things”. You can take a break, and stop for a snack or meal at the restaurant. There is a large range of savouries and gifts inside the Koala.

We hope you enjoy our channel. We enjoy part-time van-life, creating weekly episodes that are live at 5pm (AEST) Sundays, and sharing our experiences on our travels with our cavoodle, Twyla. In our episodes we stay at free and paid campsites, showing our tips and tricks on how to make life on the road easier and fun. Come join us on our adventures!
