Oh, Spoleto. You are a beautiful city. One of the great hill towns of Italy, located in the region of Umbria in the center of the country. It's on a hill, so there are many steps in Spoleto, and also some little lanes in this pedestrian zone at the heart of town.
We are going to take you on a walking tour through this delightful historic center, which you can experience during the daytime and after dark when the town comes out for its evening stroll for the classic Italian passeggiata.

The pedestrian town center has a special character, with inviting cobblestone lanes and alluring medieval alleys.
This is an in-depth look at the real Spoleto getting beyond just the tourist monuments of the churches and the museums, which are practically the only sites that you'll read about in a typical guidebook. In fact it is hard to find a guidebook that has a lot of useful information about Spoleto. The Umbria guidebooks might have a small chapter that covers the churches, museums, restaurants and hotels. But they really don't tell you much about where to walk when you're here, and what to see.
From the Roman period to the present day, the charm of Spoleto history has seduced visitors through the ages. With an excellent state of preservation the old town is not very different from the 18th and 19th century.
Spoleto has so many little lanes, and staircases, and historic buildings, and vistas that you'll probably want to spend a couple of days here.
The old town is about a square mile, so it's a manageable size, chock-full of restaurants and shops, of course, and museums and old palaces. It makes a great place for walking.
Spoleto is convenient because it's located on a train line, and there's a public bus that takes you to the old town for a very modest fee, or you could take a taxi.
Most people are familiar with Tuscany, with its famous capital of Florence and below it is the city of Rome, and while Umbria is less well-known, it's every bit as beautiful as Tuscany.
Umbria has lots of these small, beautifully preserved, historic towns that are just waiting for you to visit. And they are not crowded because they're not nearly as well-known as many of the cities of Tuscany.
Starting out at Piazza Della Liberta. It's a good place to begin because now you're on the edge of the old town, ready to explore, and city buses will bring you directly here from the train station. Also there's a parking lot down below for automobiles connected up by escalators.
Corso Mazzini extends out from the piazza and is one of the main streets of the city. It's a broad pedestrian Promenade lined with shops, hotels and restaurants, with alluring side streets.
Corso Mazzini is quite different than most streets in the old town because it's wide and straight. Most of the streets in the old town are narrow and curved, dating back centuries, but Corso Mazzini was created in the mid-19th century, an effort to make the old town more accessible.
It's also delightful to stroll in the evening when locals are out shopping, talking, enjoying their stroll – the passeggiata. We will be showing you quite a bit of Spoleto at night as well as during the daytime.
They even have some little buses that can navigate these side streets.
There is a mix here of some streets that are for pedestrians only, and others that allow some cars, but are still easy to walk on. This is a very safe place to be, for visitors and locals alike.
The Town Hall, with its Roman House, we will show you in our other movie, and right next to it, Piazza Del Mercato, the center of town for more than 2000 years. The Romans established their settlement here in the year 241 BC.
And this was the main central square of those ancient Romans. It was their forum, surrounded by temples and palaces and lively activity like shopping, eating and drinking, and that is still going on today.
A favorite spot here is Café Degli Artisti. It's a terrific place for a drink, try the local wine. While Tuscany is famous for its wines, like the Brunellos, Chiantis the super Tuscans, Umbria also produces quality wine.
Around the corner, there is a major Roman site, the arch of Monterone, one of the 5 main gates through the ancient Roman defensive walls.
This leads us to the via delle Felici which has its own arch leading into the street. There are lots of the street arches in Spoleto.
It leads to via Brignone and then to Piazza Campello where you'll see the Mascherone Fountain.
There are some benches in this little park, so it's a good place to sit and plan your next move.

Orvieto, Italy- a Charming Hilltop Town! Located in Umbria Italy
Orvieto is located in the Umbria Region of Italy and was the perfect stop for us to explore as we traveled from Rome to Florence. Orvieto was the alternate offered to our tour group since the visit inside the colosseum was canceled. This town has so much to see I was disappointed we only had about 1-1/2 hour to roam the town. The Orvieto Cathedral: Duomo Di Orvieto was the most stunning cathedral I have ever seen!
Orvieto is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Italy dating back to the Etruscan civilization that settled here in the 9th century. I recently learned that there is a series of tunnels and caves all underneath Orvieto available for touring.

Spello, Umbria, Italy, complete tour
Spello is an ancient town in Italy's Umbria region, filled with fascinating sites that we shall explore as we wander the little lanes of this charming place, often called one of Italy's most beautiful villages, up on a hill with an old Roman and medieval wall around it, and narrow peaceful pedestrian lanes that are ideal for wandering. Plus we will see, one of Italy's important art masterpieces painted on the wall of the church by Pinturicchio, and some splendid old historic buildings such as the Town Hall.

From above, you'll see how tightly clustered these old buildings are, forming a dense community ideal for exploring on foot. There is one main street that goes through the middle of town, and many more little lanes branching off on both sides. We will take you to some of the best places, as we will show you walking from one end of town to the other.
The gate leads right into Spello's main street, which changes names several times. Here it's called via Consolare.
You'll notice some intriguing little side lanes leading off, with potted plants and flowers. It's actually one of the prettiest parts of town called via Borgo San Sisto, so by all means dive in, take a little detour enjoying short meandering wander through these quaint little lanes. The winding route takes you back to the main street, and then you can reenter the next lane of this labyrinth. It provides a nice preview of many similar sites coming up.
The town has lots of cats. It's a sure sign this is a calm, peaceful town, and these cats know how to get around. They've got their little nooks and crannies and hiding spots.
Continuing along, we get to an intersection of several streets. Our main street is now called via Cavour and brings us closer to the center of town. Running alongside it we've got Piazza Matteotti, with some outdoor restaurants.
Also, here is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which contains the most important attraction of Spello, a series of frescoes by Pinturicchio. We will bring you inside for a closer look later in the program. For now we continue our walking exploration.
Entering through this archway leads us to a scenic vista on the other side of the parking lot.
Just down below, we can see the remains of the ancient Roman forum, that was the center of town, which would have been quite extensive stretching for several hundred meters with many buildings. This is all that's left now.
We have arrived at Piazza della Republica, the center of Spello. It is a relatively modest space because this is a small town. There's a fountain, there's room for cats to roam, there are benches to sit on. It's the central gathering place for locals as well as visitors, with some shops and restaurants around it. There are various attractive pedestrian lanes leading out from the piazza, and one very impressive major building, the Town Hall called Palazzo Comunale, with a museum inside that will show you later, and we'll come back to the piazza after exploring more of the wonderful streets of town.
Our main road has changed names again to via Garibaldi, named after that great hero, the unifier of the country. Every respectable town has a main Piazza or street named after Garibaldi, showing the importance of this stretch of the road.
They do love their cats here, and will see more of them as we wander these little lanes.
You'll find just a few shops and galleries scattered through town.
At the end of the a Garibaldi it widens to form what's called Lago Mazzini, with a few shops and there's some gelato here – a perfect spot for a break.
Now we face a three-way intersection. You might go straight through that arch to via Torre Belvedere. We will show you that neighborhood coming up in a bit, but we're going to turn right and continue along the main street, which is now called via Giulia.
There's even a bus stop. They offer a free shuttle bus that runs along this main lane of the old town, then extends out into the newer part of town.
Now we are finally going to depart from the main street and venture into the little side alleys, going up the via Arco Di Augusto. It looks quite intriguing up there and the way is nicely paved with this brick and stone path that acts kind of like a ramp.
As we reach the end of our journey you can look back and see that this was a very rewarding place to visit. Spello is not one of the most famous cities of Italy, but it certainly is one of the prettiest of the small hill towns.
Spello is a place that you'll always want to see again.

We are visiting Umbria in Italy, traveling by train to the city of Spoleto where we are going to spend some quality time on the main pedestrian Street showing you the people the shops and the grand tradition of the passeggiata the evening stroll. You'll also find out how to play tennis with your feet using a soccer ball.
The province of Umbria is located in central Italy, with many fine towns in one of the most interesting is Spoleto easy to reach because it's connected along one of the main lines of the Italian rail system, which is always a comfortable way to travel or you could drive a car and you'll find plenty of public parking lots in the city.
Some of the nice little towns in Umbria are not connected by train you how to get there by bus and that works out okay. Also, but here take the train and when you get out of the train station you step right in front and there are shuttle buses that will take you to the old town.
This video was photographed during the off-season, in the month of November, which turned out to be a great time to be here in Spoleto because the weather was still quite mild, just jacket weather. Even in the evening.
And there were no other tourists are you going to be walking along the main lane here at a peak time of day, and you'll notice while there are plenty of people out strolling. There do not seem to be any other tourists here, except for me who is taking the pictures.
So that is quite nice and refreshing in this day and age of over-tourism where really popular cities get super crowded places like Florence and Siena in this central Italy area are very popular and wonderful places to see, but other towns like Spoleto which are also really quite attractive and a fine destination to visit just are not crowded with tourists.
At this time of year in Italy. The twilight arrives fairly early in the evening and as that happens, more people come out for the stroll. It's the classic passeggiata.
The Italian parade of people just strolling along at a leisurely pace doing a little window shopping. It's a big pastime in Italy. Come on out dress up see your friends say hello catch up on the latest news.
People of all ages take part in this sociable performance from the youngest babies in their strollers to the oldest members of the community some of them just take it in from the sidelines.
All too often we fly through our lives as if there is no tomorrow in some kind of supersonic speed, but here in Italy in the evening and the passeggiata people are not in a hurry they are just slow down and relax.
It's a fun way to fill some time after work and before dinner, and while some snack shops and pizzerias are open this early. It's not really a time for dinner yet that comes afterward.

Spoleto in Umbria, Italy, is famous for the ancient bridge and castle up on the hill, along with the Cathedral, Roman monuments, and museums. We see it all in this special look at the historic monuments of Spoleto, Umbria, in central Italy.
We'll take you inside the castle and show you the historic exhibits from the Middle Ages.
The other great landmark of Spoleto is the Cathedral that dates back to the Romanesque days. We'll have a visit inside.
We'll also go into an ancient house dating back to the Roman days, and have a look at a Roman arch and a Roman theater, with a little museum, next to it, showing some artifacts of the ancient Roman life – sculptures, weapons and jewelry. And meet some students out on a field trip studying their history.
This will be a tour of the monuments, museums, the castle and Cathedral of Spoleto.
We're starting our visit into the past at the great Rocca. It's a castle up on the hill overlooking the city. Fortunately, you don't have to walk all the way up the hill. There is an escalator and there is an elevator that will bring you right up. That is a free service provided by the city of Spoleto. They've got 3 different escalator systems in the old town and this convenient elevator. It will take you to the top of the hill, which is quite helpful. After all we're in Umbria, famous for its hill towns like Spoleto.
Ponte delle Torri was built in the 13th century, and the architect built it on top of the foundations of an earlier ancient Roman bridge. This medieval bridge is really an incredible engineering feat. It's 80 meters high above the valley floor and the bridge spans 230 meters. It's huge!
The bridge reaches across the ravine, linking the fortress with the slopes of the Monteluco mountain. On the far and you see the tower of a smaller fortress.
Two columns in the middle are hollow inside. See two small windows for what had probably been the rooms of a guardhouse, and those of the tallest columns, reaching down to the stream.
You can go back downhill the same way, using those escalators if you like, but it's actually a very short walk that we're taking now from the fortress to the Cathedral.
It's called the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta. It was built in the Romanesque style between the years 1175 and 1227.
The interior evolved over the centuries with a mix of Renaissance and Baroque style, with many important works of art, featuring sculpture, painting and beautiful architectural details.
Behind the altar are the most important paintings in all of Spoleto, featuring stories of the Virgin. Her coronation, the Annunciation, Nativity scene, and the Death of the Virgin.
It's the final masterpiece of Filippo Lippi, who died here while painting these frescoes – buried here in a tomb designed by his son Filippino Lippi.
A few blocks away, just beyond the main market square is another great Roman structure, the Arch of Druso and Germanico, dating from the year 23 A.D. It's on a busy little street with two-way traffic going right through it.

Spoleto (/spəˈleɪtoʊ/,[3] also US: /spoʊˈleɪtoʊ, spoʊˈliːtoʊ/,[4] UK: /spoʊˈlɛtoʊ/,[5] Italian: [spoˈleːto]; Latin: Spoletum) is an ancient city in the Italian province of Perugia in east-central Umbria on a foothill of the Apennines. It is 20 km (12 mi) S. of Trevi, 29 km (18 mi) N. of Terni, 63 km (39 mi) SE of Perugia; 212 km (132 mi) SE of Florence; and 126 km (78 mi) N of Rome.
Spoleto was situated on the eastern branch of the Via Flaminia, which forked into two roads at Narni and rejoined at Forum Flaminii, near Foligno. An ancient road also ran hence to Nursia. The Ponte Sanguinario of the 1st century BC still exists. The Forum lies under today's marketplace.
Located at the head of a large, broad valley, surrounded by mountains, Spoleto has long occupied a strategic geographical position. It appears to have been an important town to the original Umbri tribes, who built walls around their settlement in the 5th century BC, some of which are visible today.
The first historical mention of Spoletium is the notice of the foundation of a colony there in 241 BC;[6] and it was still, according to Cicero[7] colonia latina in primis firma et illustris: a Latin colony in 95 BC. After the Battle of Lake Trasimene (217 BC) Spoletium was attacked by Hannibal, who was repulsed by the inhabitants[8] During the Second Punic War the city was a useful ally to Rome. It suffered greatly during the civil wars of Gaius Marius and Sulla. The latter, after his victory over Marius, confiscated the territory of Spoletium (82 BC). From this time forth it was a municipium.
Under the empire it seems to have flourished once again, but is not often mentioned in history. Martial speaks of its wine. Aemilianus, who had been proclaimed emperor by his soldiers in Moesia, was slain by them here on his way from Rome (AD 253), after a reign of three or four months. Rescripts of Constantine (326) and Julian (362) are dated from Spoleto. The foundation of the episcopal see dates from the 4th century: early martyrs of Spoleto are legends, but a letter to the bishop Caecilianus, from Pope Liberius in 354 constitutes its first historical mention. Owing to its elevated position Spoleto was an important stronghold during the Vandal and Gothic wars; its walls were dismantled by Totila.[9]
Under the Lombards, Spoleto became the capital of an independent duchy, the Duchy of Spoleto (from 570), and its dukes ruled a considerable part of central Italy. In 774 it became part of Holy Roman Empire. Several of its dukes, mainly during the late 9th Century, rose to wear the crown of that Empire. Together with other fiefs, it was bequeathed to Pope Gregory VII by the powerful countess Matilda of Tuscany, but for some time struggled to maintain its independence. In 1155 it was destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa. In 1213 it was definitively occupied by Pope Gregory IX. During the absence of the papal court in Avignon, it was prey to the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, until in 1354 Cardinal Albornoz brought it once more under the authority of the Papal States.
