Calabria, Italy. Caribbean of Europe - this is how tourists call Calabria. The region is located in the very south of the Apennine Peninsula and is washed by the waters of the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The entire coast of Calabria is a continuous beach area and therefore there are always a lot of vacationers here. Fascinating landscapes and hills with vineyards, mountain peaks and magnificent nature. Everywhere, among the hills, there are small cozy towns with ancient temples and historical monuments. All this charm can be seen on the video clip on youtube, which was filmed from a drone in 4k, located at a bird's eye view. Capital
The capital of Calabria, Catanzaro, is located in the southern part of the region, right on the coast of the Ionian Sea. Catanzaro is considered one of the largest tourist centers with excellent infrastructure and equipped beaches. And yet, there are many museums, cathedrals, palaces and other attractions.
How to get there
Calabria can be reached by various means of transport. The region has airports that receive aircraft from many European countries. Also, trains run to different cities along the railway lines and along the coast throughout the region. Since Calabria is washed by the waters of two seas, you can get here by ferry. All five provinces of the region are connected by bus service (it is possible to purchase a single ticket). But, there are provinces that can only be reached by car. Many tourists rent it right at the station.
Climate in Calabria
Calabria is a warm region with an annual rainfall of up to 800 mm. The climate in the mountains is very similar to the Alpine. The climate near the sea coast is hot in summer, moderate in winter with little rainfall. The temperature in summer reaches 35*C, and in winter - up to -10*C.
Major cities
In the region of the Tyrrhenian coast, on the mountain slopes, the town of Tropea nestled comfortably. It is buried in flowering alleys of fruit trees, in a mist of fog and the sea. Tropea is an old town. According to archaeologists, the town existed in the 4th century BC. It can be reached by one road by car or on foot, or by hard-to-reach trails. On the territory of the town you can admire the Franciscan monastery, the Duomo Cathedral, the Vescoville Palace, next to the rock. There is a small beach area in the hill area. And to see all the beauty of Tropea, you need to go up to the observation deck.
Not far from Reggio di Calabria is the town of Scylla (Schilla). It can be conditionally divided into three zones - the Old Town, the fishing village and the beach area with shops, cafes and other infrastructure. The old city was built right on the rocks and the Cathedral of Immacolata, Ruffo's Castle deserve attention. Nearby is the village of Bivongi with a masterpiece of architecture from the Byzantine era - the monastery of San Giovanni Teristis.
What to see
There are a lot of magnificent towns in the region, where the atmosphere of antiquity hovers. For example, the town of Tropea, built right on the rocks, is called the Coast of the Gods with stunningly beautiful beaches and clear, turquoise water. Right above Cape Scylla rises the old fortress of Rkffo. At one time it even housed a monastery. Then, the tower of the fortress was used as a lighthouse. Today in the fortress there is a museum, where there is a real sample of a boat from which swordfish were caught.
In the area of the mountain peak of Golgotha, there are buildings of an abandoned village surrounded by rocks. This place is called the ghost town of Pentedattilo. Today tourists come here to feel how time can stop for a moment.
