Things to do in North Devon ???????????????????????????? : Trip to Exmoor National Park, Hartland Quay, Clovelly

In this exciting video, I'll take you on a journey through the stunning landscapes of Exmoor National Park and the captivating North Devon area in England. Join me as we revisit my unforgettable road trip from March 2022.

Our adventure begins at the iconic Tarr Steps, an ancient bridge that stretches majestically across the river Barle, resembling an enormous centipede. Discover the intriguing local legend about how the devil himself was involved in its creation, and how the fearless parson changed the fate of the bridge forever.

Next, we'll embark on a hike up Dunkery Hill, reaching the summit of Dunkery Beacon, Somerset's highest point. I'll share my experience of tackling this ascent, and the breathtaking panoramic views that awaited us at the summit.

Our journey continues as we head to Pollock Weir, where the world's second-largest tidal range makes for a unique visit. Explore the dried-up harbor and vast expanse of grey, rounded rocks on Pollock Beach, all while navigating the steep slopes and narrow roads that lead to this hidden gem.

We then embark on a scenic drive to Hartland Quays, a place known for its spectacular cliffs and captivating rock formations. Witness the mesmerizing sunset that graced our evening and our decision to return the next morning to experience its beauty in broad daylight.

Discover the charm of Clovelly, a village with a twist—it charges admission for entry! Explore the rich history of this picturesque village, where donkeys and sledges once ruled the cobblestone streets. Immerse yourself in the old-world charm of its half-timbered houses, the serene chapel, and the 1930s fisherman's cottage.

Visit the Kingsley Museum and learn about Charles Kingsley, whose novel Westward Ho! put this region of the West Country on the map for travelers. Finally, descend to the enchanting harbour for a view that will leave you breathless.

Places to see in ( Hartland - UK )

Places to see in ( Hartland - UK )

The village of Hartland, whose parish incorporates the hamlet of Stoke to the west and the village of Meddon in the south, is the most north-westerly settlement in the county of Devon, England.

Now a large village which acts as a centre for a rural neighbourhood and has minor tourist traffic, until Tudor times Hartland was an important port. It lies close to the promontory of Hartland Point, where the coast of Devon turns from facing north into the Bristol Channel to face west into the Atlantic Ocean. There is an important lighthouse on the point. The town's harbour, Hartland Quay, is to the south of the point: the quay was originally built in the late 16th century but was swept away in 1887. The high tower of the Church of Saint Nectan in Stoke remains a significant landmark for ships in the Bristol Channel.

Hartland is a convenient centre for walking parts of the South West Coast Path, and the wild coastal scenery around the point is some of the most dramatic on the path, with views across to Lundy Island. From Hartland Point, the Lundy Company operates its helicopter service to Lundy between November and March. The 319 bus service, a council-supported infrequent route operated by Stagecoach Devon, runs from Barnstaple to Hartland and return. There is also a 519 service which runs to Bude.

The town was in the past known as Harton and was an unreformed borough, finally abolished in 1886. In medieval times there was an important abbey at Hartland, where the shrine of St Nectan was venerated. Hartland Abbey and the parish church are located some two miles away in Stoke. Hartland Abbey was built in 1157 and consecrated by Bartholomew Iscanus in 1160.

Saint Nectan, sometimes styled Saint Nectan of Hartland, was a 5th-century Celtic holy man who lived in Stoke. The Anglican church is St Nectan's Church, Stoke, Hartland. The Roman Catholic Church (Our Lady and St Nectan's Church, Hartland) was opened in 1964: it was also dedicated to St Nectan. The building was closed in 2010 due to unavailability of a priest to celebrate mass there, and was demolished in 2012.

The Parish Church of St Nectan has the highest tower in Devon (128 ft), built in the late Perpendicular style. The church is large (137 ft long) and was built in the mid 14th century. Notable features include the fine Norman font, the rood screen (the finest in north Devon) and the old wagon roofs. The monuments include an elaborate medieval tomb-chest, a small brass of 1610 and a metal-inlaid lid of a churchyard tomb of 1618.

Places to see in ( Clovelly - UK )

Places to see in ( Clovelly - UK )

Clovelly is a small village in the Torridge district of Devon, England. It has a harbour and is a tourist attraction notable for its steep pedestrianised cobbled main street, donkeys and views over the Bristol Channel. At the 2011 census, the parish population was 443, which was 50 fewer than ten years previously. The ward of Clovelly Bay includes the island of Lundy.

North west of the village is the site of the Iron Age hillfort at Windbury Head. Clovelly used to be a fishing village and in 1901 had a population of 621. It is a cluster of largely wattle and daub cottages on the sides of a rocky cleft; its steep main street descends 400 feet (120 m) to the pier, too steeply to allow wheeled traffic. Sledges are used for the movement of goods. All Saints' Church, restored in 1866, is late Norman, containing several monuments to the Cary family, Lords of the Manor for 600 years.

Unusually, the village is still privately owned and has been associated with only three families since the middle of the 13th century, nearly 800 years. The estate is run by the Clovelly Estate Company, led by the Hon. John Rous, a descendant of the Hamlyn family who have owned the village, estate and manor house Clovelly Court since 1738. John Rous is the eldest son of Keith Rous, the 5th Earl of Stradbroke and Mary Asquith, granddaughter of former Prime Minister Herbert H. Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith. The scenery has been captured by artists for its richness of colour, especially in the separately accessed and separated Clovelly Court and along The Hobby, a road cut through the woods and overlooking the sea. The South West Coast Path National Trail runs from the top of the village and the section from Clovelly to Hartland Quay is particularly spectacular.

Each of the buildings along the terraced cobbled street is architecturally listed: more than 50 of these 71 are on the main street itself. Only seven buildings are not listed. At Grade II*, are numbers 16, and 45-47, 53-54, (53 has the house name Crazy Kate's) and 59-61. There are two public houses and two hotels.

There is a road leading to the harbour but the village main street is not accessible by motor vehicle. The lack of vehicular access to the main street has led to deliveries being made by sledge. This is not done as a tourist attraction, but as a matter of practicality. Goods are delivered by being pulled down on a sledge from the upper car park, and refuse is collected by being pulled down the hill to a vehicle at the harbour.

( Clovelly - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Clovelly . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Clovelly - UK

A Matty’s drive with us production 24/07/22 South Molton - Newton Bridge North Devon England UK ????

Please click the 3 little dots at the top of the Screen and choose highest quality as we always upload a high quality video.lWelcome to Matty’s diaries. Matty is a 15 year old complex character from the English Riviera who just so happens to be my son. Matty started time-lapsing and recording at the beginning of his isolation in March 2020. I have no idea where the idea came from, he just grabbed his IPad one day and started recording his jigsaw progress. This then expanded to diamond paintings, Lego and then our drives out. They became a way of Matty giving his news to loved ones and school friends who he no longer saw. As of today 16.10.2021 writing this update we have been isolating/Shielding 589 days so far. Matty’s just had his first vaccine and we hope to get him back to school in January once staff have retrained. Wrap around care is just me (Tracey) and Mattys dad Mike. I do the waking night shifts and sleep in the morning, this has given me hours of lonely time during the night to edit Matty’s creations and try and make them watchable. It’s almost become a therapy for Matty and I. I’m not going to list Matty’s health record but take away the obvious artificial airway he actually has more complex issues you can’t see. He is really a very innocent, unworldly 4-5 year old who thrives on routine and positive praise. So please be kind, we never imagined that anyone other than family would ever see the videos and to be honest the family stopped watching and commenting a long long time ago. However we have made some lovely YouTube friends who have been such a huge part of Matty’s shielding life. Each day Matty checks his comments to look for his regular viewers who he has come to rely on. They make him happy. Matty cannot reply to comments independently so as much as he reads them every night, I reply with him once or twice a week. We are grateful.
Matty’s drives are split in to smaller parts which makes them easier to find when he sends his weekly links to his class mates.
At this moment in time Matty is home schooled 5 mornings a week for 2 hours by his favourite TA from school, this stops and starts depending on Matty’s wellbeing and on covid/illness in school. This takes place In the garden or behind perspex to keep matty safe. The school have been amazing and we are very lucky.
Any questions please just ask me, I’m happy to answer. We travel within a 2 hour radius of Torbay and are happy to drive somewhere on request, it gives Matty a task and he loves a task.
Matty is in the van with headphones on watching/Listening to his beloved carnival dvds. It’s his happy place, the only place he doesn’t tic, rock, pick and pace. It’s also the closest Mike and I get to down time as Matty will be relaxed and not have any anxiety.
At the moment we stay in the van driving and people watching, rarely get out, Matty in general refuses to. We can be out for 3 - 4 hours on a longer drive so we purchased a Porto loo which is a bucket with a lid. Does the job and keeps Matty safe. It really is the basics and smallest things that are keeping us plodding along until we can be with loved ones again.
Seriously be kind please, we really are just winging it and I’m so exhausted that negative stuff effects me, it shouldn’t but it does.
Anyway stay safe, we hope you like our little videos, but if not that’s fine. We made them for Matty so as long as he is happy, life is good.
We watch the videos on tv everyday that we are stuck at home Which Is 90% of the time, they show us the outside world. So not for critics just for us to enjoy and reminisce and share with like minded souls.

Update Matty started his special needs college on the 14th June 2022, It’s going well. ????????????????
