Karelia is a region in Northwestern Russia, which borders Finland to the west, Murmansk Oblast to the north, the White Sea to the northeast, Arkhangelsk Oblast to the east, Vologda Oblast to the southeast, and Leningrad Oblast to the south.
Karelia is known as the country of lakes. One quarter of Karelia's surface is covered by water including about sixty thousand lakes. The second-largest lake of Europe, Lake Onega, is located in Karelia. The largest lake of Europe, Lake Ladoga is partly located in Karelia (together with Leningrad Oblast). Wherever there is land, there are dense forests covering the ground.
Karelia has strong cultural connection with Finland and the Karelians, for whom the republic is named, are a Finno-Ugric group very closely related to the Finns. The western part of Karelia is a relatively recent Russian/Soviet conquest from Finland, and a bit of a sore spot for the Finns.

Valamo Monastery - the monastery of the Finnish Orthodox Church. Originally Valamo was placed on an island of lake Ladoga in Karelia but was evacuated whilst in war with the Russians in the 1940s. The monks came with their icons and rebuilt Valamo close to Heinävesi a bit west of Joensuu. The monastery is visited by many Finns, orthodox or not, and is featured in most tourist guides as well. Almost all buildings though are post war and one can't suppress the impression that there is a commercial streak somewhere. However most people come to see the ancient icons from the old Valamo monastery. Boats full of tourists leave during the summer months from Sortavala, Lakhdenpokhya, and Pitkyaranta, as well as big river cruise boats from Saint Petersburg and Moscow. It's also possible to travel here by helicopter from Petrozavodsk.

Amazing Karelia
Karelia is famous for its islands, in particular, Valaam and Kizhi with its Kizhski Pogost (burial ground) which is protected by UNESCO. People come here to experience the wonderful dawn. Visitors to Karelia can see the largest plain waterfall in Europe – Kivach, stay at the Martial Waters health resort which opened during the reign of Peter the First, and discover the Karelian-Finnish epic poem The Kalevala.

Kostomuksha | Karelia | Russia
Kostomuksha is a small town in the north of Karelia, cozy and very beautiful, as if grown in the middle of a forest. The city-forming enterprise here is Karelsky Okatysh JSC. The nature around Kostomuksha is simply fantastic!
Every year the flow of tourists both to Karelia and Kostomuksha is getting bigger and bigger.

Road trip RUSSIA | Ugly Pitkäranta? | Ruskeala QUARRY
We are a couple that is living full time in a conversion van and loving this simple lifestyle. Now we are travelling in Karelia region in Russia. Ruskeala quarry is situated just beside finnish border. Old quarry has flooded and nowdays acts as tourist attraction. You can walk around the quarry or fly the way back with really long zipline!

Kivach Waterfall, or Kivach Falls, is a famous natural landmark located in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. It is considered one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in Europe.

Trip to Ruskeala in winter (Karelia) by Ruskeala Express train from Saint Petersburg.
One of the options to spend a weekend is to go on a one or two-day trip to the Ruskeala mountain (Gornyy) park, located in the Republic of Karelia, and at the same time take a ride on the Ruskeala Express train, the only daily steam train in Russia. The train started to run between Sortavala and Ruskeala Mountain Park on June 1, 2019. Travel time is 1 hour.

One of the most common ways to travel around Russia is by train! ???? But there’s only ONE daily steam-powered passenger train left in Russia, and it takes you to Ruskeala Mountain Park! ????
For me, the Ruskeala Express is Russia’s Polar Express, the ride is just as magical as the winter wonderland outside its windows. Feel like a noble as you sit inside your royal carriage, and eat some Kalitkas to get a taste of Karelia.
But I didn’t venture North alone, a very special guest came with me all the way from Mexico! ???????? And he’s never seen so much snow in Russia like in Ruskeala.❄️
The Ruskeala Mountain Park is not just enchanting, it also has history behind every marble stone.???? Its caves even helped build the city of Saint Petersburg! But a train isn’t the only ride we are going to take, there’s also a real Russian horse and sleigh awaiting us ???? and something very EXTREME!
So come along on this winter journey as I head to Russia’s North, and see where Russia’s Polar Express takes me! ????????????
