L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue - A Wonder Provencal Village Discovering the Most Beautiful Villages in France

Capital of antiques and flea markets, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, very lively on Sundays and market days, is a popular destination for locals and residents passing through. Thanks to a preserved vernacular heritage and a high quality cultural program, the attractiveness of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue continues to grow over the years.

Springing from the nearby Fontaine-de-Vaucluse chasm, the Sorgue with cool emerald green waters meanders through L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The mossy paddle wheels, remnants of the textile industry that ensured the prosperity of the city, still line the canals, where you can also see traditional flat-bottomed boats (Nègo Chin) typical of the place, once used by fisherman.

The capital of bargain hunters

With 300 antique dealers grouped in various sites (such as Ile aux Brocantes or the Village des Antiquaires de la Gare), L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue attracts bargain hunters from all over the world in search of rare pieces or trinkets unpublished. The big Fairs of Easter and August 15 (the latter is now shifted to autumn from 2021) bring together more than five hundred exhibitors and attract thousands of visitors who crowd along the quays and in the shops.

A living cultural heritage: the markets of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
On Thursday and Sunday mornings, crowds flock to the streets of the city, the scene of a traditional market in Provencal colors: tasty early vegetables, cheeses and vintages from the region are among the products offered on the merchants' stalls. On the first Sunday of August, part of the market moves on the water: fruits, vegetables, lavender and soaps are loaded onto Nègo Chin, these typical flat-bottomed fishing boats, and offered to buyers. by merchants in traditional costume. Discover the Source of the Sorgue at Fontaine de Vaucluse

You'll find the source of the Sorgue river at the commune of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Cotes d’Azur region It is the biggest spring in France and the fifth biggest in the world with an annual flow of 630 million cubic metres. Apparently it surges in March for about 5 weeks and then subsides.

We weren't there at the flood, but if you check out the video you can see just how high the waters can go (hint: I would have needed scuba gear at that time).

We came here in search of the source of the Sorgue River and found a beautiful village aflush with water from its mysterious spring. To quote the Rime of the Ancient Mariner there was literally water, water, everywhere (but, I'm glad to say, plenty to drink)!

But there's a lot more to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse than this water source. An attractive medieval village surrounded by dramatic high cliffs, overlooked by a ruined bishop's castle, Saint Véran buried in the local church, plus the emerald green river flowing through it help to explain why this is one of the most visited villages in Provence. Oh, and Petrarch, the celebrated 14th century Italian poet and scholar, lived here!

It is market day in Isle sur la Sorgue! Let's check out the local specialties as we walk through the narrow streets of this little town and its canals.
????????????????????????????????

Fontaine de Vaucluse: Climb to the Fortress

The ruins of the old castle of the bishops of Cavaillon still overlook Fontaine de Vaucluse today. Perched on an immense rocky peak encircled by the river near the source of the Sorgue, the ruined fortress walls and surrounding landscape form a classic romantic picture.

Built in the 12th century, it became, two centuries later, the summer residence of Philippe de Cabassole, bishop of Cavaillon at the time. Francis Petrarch, the poet philosopher who retired to Fontaine de Vaucluse, became his friend and often visited him. So we decided to climb up the hill from the village to do the same. OK, so we were six centuries too late, but the thought was there.

You start the climb from a hard-to-find (well, it was for us) stepped path round the corner from the tourist office. It was cunningly concealed behind construction works when we finally found it!

BTW, that high wall sticking out into space in the title picture is where Tony stood to shoot his video of the source!
