The ULTIMATE SICILY ROAD TRIP - Taormina, Ortigia, Agrigento, Erice & MORE (Italy’s Hidden Gems)

Welcome to Sicily, Italy's southern island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean. While Italy attracts millions of tourists each year, many tend to focus on its more iconic cities and regions. Sicily is by no means a hidden gem, but it certainly provides a more authentic and less crowded Italian experience. With its alluring mix of ancient ruins, charming coastal towns, and delicious cuisine, this is the Italy we've been looking for. We are so lucky that Tommy’s parents are joining us on this unforgettable roadtrip as we go beyond the usual tourist hotspots and immerse ourselves in the Sicilian culture.

Our first destination was the enchanting town of Taormina. In this picturesque, cliffside town, there was so much to do. We visited Isola Bella, a stunning island just off the coast, indulged in incredible dishes like the iconic Bam Bar granitas and pistachio pasta, and delved into the rich history at the ancient amphitheater.

We then headed to Ortigia, a charming island brimming with character and history. Strolling through the streets, we discovered the vibrant outdoor market, where local vendors displayed an array of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, spices, and FRESH seafood. The market's lively atmosphere was sensory overload, and we couldn't resist sampling some of the incredible seafood. The culinary scene in Ortigia, especially its exceptional seafood, makes it an unmissable highlight on any Sicily road trip.

Agrigento's Valley of the Temples stands as an essential stop on a Sicily journey. This ancient archaeological site has well-preserved Greek ruins that transport visitors back in time. We went at sunset for ideal lighting and a great atmosphere.

Erice, a hilltop town in Sicily, is a must-visit destination. With its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, the town offers a charming and historic atmosphere. We tried the local cookies, which were so yummy. The town's unique blend of history and culinary delights makes it a memorable stop on any Sicilian itinerary.

We spent a couple nights in Castellammare del Golfo, a charming town on the northwest coast of Sicily.

We ended our road trip spending few days by the sea near Messina, providing a perfect place to reflect on our incredible Sicilian adventure.

The toponym derives from the Latin Castrum (fortress) and the settlement took the name of Castrum Minervae due to the presence of a temple consecrated to Minerva.

Already in prehistoric times the coastal caves have known the human presence.
The Latin voice since the 3rd century appears - as ancient Latinism - also in Greek, that is Κάστρον (Kàstron).

The birth of a first urban center occurred at the time of the Liburnian-Illyrian and Pelasgian migrations (17th-16th century BC) when from nearby Epirus populations from the Balkan peninsula moved westwards.

It was inhabited by the Messapi (with the name of ΛΙΚ? On the Map of Soleto) and by the Greeks.
It was probably here that Aeneas landed (read later when at Minerva's temple!)....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

????????Ruins of Herculaneum Walking Tour - Walk and Learn about the ruins with City Walks 4K!

See chapters below. We are continuing our exploration of ancient Roman ruins in Southern Italy. Herculaneum was a small location for the rich that Vesuvius destroyed in the 79AD eruption. To compare Herculaneum vs. Pompeii consider that When Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D, it covered the city with ash instead of pumice. Hence, the ruins are actually much better preserved. However, it's a much smaller archeological park which makes it much more approachable. It's a short but straightforward walk from the train station. Many people catch a bus from the train station up to Vesuvius and then tour Herculaneum afterwards. Unfortunately, they were doing construction work up at Vesuvius so it was closed while we were in the area. You can totally tour Herculaneum without a guide or with a downloadable phone app. The site is small and there are plenty of restaurants just outside the gates. You can stay at hotels or vacation apartment rentals in Naples, Sorrento, or the little cities in between.

If you wish to visit Herculaneum, you can get tickets in the visitor center and they have lockers too. To get to Herculaneum from Naples, you can just take the train.

The Herculaneum Scrolls have recently made the news following a new scientific technique that promises to allow the full reading of these ancient documents.

???? Salento - Italy 2015

Salento is a geographic and historical region at the southern end of the administrative region of Apulia in Southern Italy. It is a sub-peninsula of the Italian Peninsula, sometimes described as the heel of the Italian boot. It encompasses the entire administrative area of the province of Lecce, a large part of the province of Brindisi and part of that of Taranto.

The peninsula is also known as Terra d'Otranto, and in the past Sallentina. In ancient times it was called variously Calabria or Messapia.
