For more than a month, Strasbourg is enveloped in a festive and spiritual spirit that has hardly any equivalent in Europe.
Strasbourg, capital of Christmas enjoys an exceptional reputation. Each year, nearly two million visitors flock to the Alsatian capital to discover its wonders.
The Strasbourg Christmas Market extends over more than ten sites, all located within the Big Island.
During the four weeks of the Strasbourg Christmas market, as soon as night falls, the city is adorned with sublime illuminations that give it a magical dimension. The big fir tree, place Kléber, is the most beautiful expression of this. Thirty meters high, wonderfully decorated, it impresses with its presence, its majesty. Symbol of an Alsatian tradition dating back five centuries, it is the ambassador of a city bathed in light.
The Christkindelsmärik, or market of the child Jesus, is the name given in the Alsatian language to the traditional Christmas market which has been held since 1570 in Strasbourg, Alsace, and was for a long time the only one in France. It begins on the first Saturday of Advent and ends on the evening of December 24. The Christkindelsmärik attracts two million visitors from all over the world every year.

The Christkindelsmärik in Strasbourg is one of the oldest Christmas markets, which were specific to the Germanic world. The most famous was that of Nuremberg, but those of Frankfurt, Dresden and Berlin were also very famous. In the Middle Ages, a market was organized in Strasbourg in anticipation of the feast of Saint Nicolas on December 6. It is indeed to this saint, bishop of Myra in Turkey in the 4th century, that the role of giver of gifts to children was attributed. To allow parents to obtain sweets and toys, a market, called in Alsatian “Klausemärik”, was then set up a few days before this date.

A business trip almost brought me to the Atlantic Ocean in France. On the way back to Germany I was recommended to stop in Laon. Laon is a quite old city that sits on the only mountain of the whole area. So I drove there times past and made a small walk through the city.

Laon, hooggelegen middeleeuws stad van Kunst en Geschiedenis, vroeger geliefd bij de schrijver Victor Hugo die er vol lof over was, is omringd door 7 kilometer stadsmuur en heeft meer dan 80 historische beschermde of ingeschreven monumenten.
Zijn prachtige gotische kathedraal met vijf indrukwekkende torens heerst over de hoge stad. De O.L.V. kathedraal van Laon is gebouwd in de 12de en 13de eeuw, heeft een harmonieuze voorgevel met poorten voorzien van gewerkte bogen, en als opvallend detail levensgrote ossen op de hoeken van de torens aan de voorzijde, een verwijzing naar een oude lokale legende. Als u naar binnen gaat kunt u de indrukwekkende beuk bewonderen, maar ook de prachtige met rozen versierde glas in lood ramen van het koor en de dwarsbeuk aan de noordkant...
Maak een wandelingetje rond de kathedraal, langs de stadsmuren of door de middeleeuwse straten, en ontdek de vele monumenten, en gebouwen van de vestingstad: het voormalig bischoppelijk paleis, nu de rechtbank; hospitaal Hôtel-Dieu uit de 12de eeuw, waarin het VVV kantoor van de streek van Laon zich gevestigd heeft, met zijn gotische zaal gewelfd met bogen; de burcht, gebouwd op bevel van Henri IV; Romaanse kapel van de Templiers, met de transi van Guillaume de Harcigny, arts van koning Charles VI; de poort van Ardon uit de 13de eeuw... Een wandeling langs de stadsmuren is tevens de gelegenheid om van het prachtige uitzicht over de lage stad, en de omliggende laagvlakte te genieten. Het bezoek aan de hoge stad neemt u vervolgens mee naar het westen, waar de middeleeuwse poort van Soissons en de scheve toren (la tour penchée) rijzen; hier vindt u ook de abdij Saint-Martin, met zijn voormalige abdijkerk van de Premontratenzers uit de 12de eeuw, de kloostergang uit de 18de eeuw met zijn middeleeuwse tuin, en de kloostergebouwen waarin nu de gemeentebibliotheek is ondergebracht.
Voor de liefhebbers van kunst en archeologie is er het museum van Laon, ondergebracht in de voormalige commanderij van de Templiers. Hier vindt u een antieke verzameling Griekse, Egyptische en Cypriotische kunst, regionale archeologie en schilderijen van de 15de tot 19de eeuw, van de Franse, Italiaanse, Vlaamse en Nederlandse stromingen.

D. Ellicott Ray’s Requiem Mass is a major new composition from MusicTreks ( ) featuring large chorus and symphony orchestra. Two years in the making, the Requiem is performed in the original Latin of the Roman Mass. (With this section, the Mass proper begins. It is preceded by an orchestral Introit. Each movement of the Requiem includes a video tour of one of the world’s great cathedrals, filmed for this production on location in 9 countries. Following the Introit, the first movement is Requiem Aeternam, and is accompanied by a tour of Soissons Cathedral in France. The Requiem is decidedly cinematic in tone, with melodies, harmonies and orchestration that serve to emphasize the grandeur and beauty of the 24 cathedral and church settings.
Requiem Aeternam, the first movement, is scored for a large chorus, strings (11 violins, 13 cellos, and 9 double basses), and 6 French horns.
Like all MusicTreks programs, this video features original “neoclassical” music that is relaxing, tranquil, contemplative, romantic, peaceful, inspirational, beautiful, and cinematic in tone.
