Guwahati is an ancient urban city and was in fact known as Pragjyotishpur and Durjaya in the state of Kamrup now known as Assam. Situated on the banks of river Brahmaputra and foothills of the Shillong plateau, Assam is known for its rich heritage. Guwahati is also a major educational and commercial hub.
Blessed with scenic beauty with scenic views of the brahmaputra and the mountain ranges alongside it, Guwahati is also rich in flora and fauna. The pobitora wildlife sanctuary which is situated 48 kms from Guwahati is home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros, leopards, wild boar and barking deer.

Sualkuchi : Situated on the northern bank of River Brahmaputra, around 35 km away from Guwahati, the weavers' village of Sualkuchi is popularly called the centre of Assam's textiles. Pat silk and Muga silk are two popular kinds of silks used. Since it has been declared as a Handloom Heritage Village, it is a great tourist stopover. It is known for its handwoven fabrics created following techniques that are centuries old. The mekhela chadors woven here are very popular and most of them sport the popular kinkhaap design, which comprises two front-facing lions. It is said this design has been in use since the times of the Ahom kings. The chadors are also decorated with patterns of flowers, creepers etc. Lined with bamboo houses, the rustic village is a birdwatcher's paradise as well.
Hajo : Hajo is an ancient pilgrimage center for the Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims. This is a unique example of religious harmony. The place is full of mythological importance and is considered to be a highly sacred place by all the three religions. The small town is located on the banks of river Brahmaputra, 24 km from the city of Guwahati in the Kamrup district of Assam. It is well connected with the rest of the state.
A number of ancient places of worship are located at Hajo. The Hayagriva Madhava Mandir is the most famous temple. There is an important Muslim mosque located in the Hajo city known as the Poa Mecca.
Hayagriva Madhava Temple- The temple is situated on the Monikut hill. The present Hayagriva Madhava temple structure was constructed by the King Raghudeva Narayan in 1583. According to some historians, the King of Pala dynasty constructed the original temple during the 6th century AD. The stone temple enshrines an image of Hayagriva Madhava or god Vishnu. The image resembles the famous Jagannath of Puri in Orissa.
Powa-Mecca- This is a celebrated Muslim shrine. The word powa /poa meaning one fourth. Implying its importance to be equivalent to one-fourth of the Mecca of Arab Emirates. It was built by Mir Lutufullah-i-Shiraji in 1657, during the period of the Mughal emperor Shahjahan. It is believed that soil from the Mecca was used while laying the foundation of this mosque.
