Exploring An Abandoned Soviet Airfield (near the Ukrainian/Russian border)

This is the type of place that you won't read about in Lonely Planet. If you are interested in all things Soviet and want to witness in person the remnants that remain, going to the small city of Vovchansk in Ukraine is definitely worth the trip. Only 10km from the Russian border, this city was an important key to the aviation industry in the USSR, home a pilot school and training field. Now the airfield still remains on the outskirts of the city with a few of the key airplanes and helicopters that were used for training purposes. If you'd like to come here yourself, the easiest way is to go to Kharkiv first and then take a bus from Konnyi Market.

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads):

*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*

Explored an UNDERGROUND Airbase - Soviet Tanks And Armored Trains | URBEX

In today's episode, we are on a road trip down the entire Adriatic coast to visit an underground airbase together with some unique military equipment used in the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia.

Our first location is a former Yugoslavian underground airbase. Such underground airbases were the largest military secretes of the former Yugoslavia. Today many of them are abandoned and some, like this one, are closed but actively maintained to be used in any future conflicts.

Our next location is a former armored train once used by Croatia's military. As war in Yugoslavia seemed inevitable in the early 90s, Croatia's national railway set up a plan to hasty convert one of its diesel locomotives to an armored train. Build to liberate occupied areas of the country, in the end it was never used and today lays forgotten in an active train yard.

As Yugoslavia played its neutral role in the Cold War, it received numerous military equipment from NATO and the Soviets. The T-55 was the most widespread tank in the Yugoslav army and was heavily used by bought sides during the 90s Balkan war. In the postwar years, many of those were disabled and placed as memorials across the entire country.
