map of Kyiv [ Ukraine ]

Kyiv (/kiːv/ KEEV)[10] or Kiev (/ˈkiːɛv/ KEE-ev; Ukrainian: Київ, romanized: Kyïv, pronounced [ˈkɪjiu̯] (audio speaker iconlisten)) is the capital and most populous city of Ukraine. It is in north-central Ukraine along the Dnieper River. As of 1 January 2021 its population was 2,962,180 making Kyiv the seventh-most populous city in Europe.

Kyiv is an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural center in Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions, and historical landmarks. The city has an extensive system of public transport and infrastructure, including the Kyiv Metro.

The city's name is said to derive from the name of Kyi, one of its four legendary founders. During its history, Kyiv, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, passed through several stages of prominence and obscurity. The city probably existed as a commercial center as early as the 5th century. A Slavic settlement on the great trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople, Kyiv was a tributary of the Khazars, until its capture by the Varangians (Vikings) in the mid-9th century. Under Varangian rule, the city became a capital of Kievan Rus', the first East Slavic state. Completely destroyed during the Mongol invasions in 1240, the city lost most of its influence for the centuries to come. It was a provincial capital of marginal importance in the outskirts of the territories controlled by its powerful neighbours, first Lithuania, then Poland and ultimately Russia.

The city prospered again during the Russian Empire's Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century. In 1918, after the Ukrainian People's Republic declared independence from Soviet Russia, Kyiv became its capital. From 1921 onwards Kyiv was a city of Soviet Ukraine, which was proclaimed by the Red Army, and, from 1934, Kyiv was its capital. The city was almost completely ruined during World War II but quickly recovered in the postwar years, remaining the Soviet Union's third-largest city.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and Ukrainian independence in 1991, Kyiv remained Ukraine's capital and experienced a steady influx of ethnic Ukrainian migrants from other regions of the country. During the country's transformation to a market economy and electoral democracy, Kyiv has continued to be Ukraine's largest and wealthiest city. Its armament-dependent industrial output fell after the Soviet collapse, adversely affecting science and technology, but new sectors of the economy such as services and finance facilitated Kyiv's growth in salaries and investment, as well as providing continuous funding for the development of housing and urban infrastructure. Kyiv emerged as the most pro-Western region of Ukraine; parties advocating tighter integration with the European Union dominate during elections. Administratively, the city is divided into districts (raions), which have their own units of central and locally elected councils with jurisdiction over a limited scope of affairs.[1] Between 2010 and 2022[nb 1] the Kyiv district councils were abolished.[2]

The last Kyiv district reorganization took place in 2001, and currently Kyiv districts are:

ZAPOROZHIAN SICH, Ukraine: heart of Ukrainian freedom & bravery, Cossack history | Khortytsia island

#Ukraine #Zaporozhian #Sich #Cossack #history #Ukrainianhistory #Khortytsia #worldwithatwist

The Zaporozhian Sich – the cradle of Ukrainian Cossacks, Khortytsia island, Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine:

Instagram:

According to a legend, in the 16th century the Ukrainian slaves were tired from oppression of their masters. The bravest of them ran away and decided to organize their own military defensive formation, based on the democracy rules, to protect independence and rights of Ukrainians. They were called Cossacks - free, independent people. Later they built Zaporozhian Sich.
Zaporozhian Sich was formed beyond the rapids (granite ledges of rocks) of the Dnieper River on the Khortytsya island. The phrase “Beyond the rapids” called in Ukrainian “za porogamy” was transformed into “Zaporizhzhia”. And Sich comes from the Ukrainian verb “sikty” (in English called “to cut”), which meant “to cut the wood.” The first settlers chose for the living inaccessible to enemies thickets, where they made “cuts” – passages free of trees (in Ukrainian called “sich”).
The historians consider Dmytro Baida Vyshnevetsky to be the founder of the “first Zaporozhian Sich” in the 16-17 centuries.

Today recreated historical complex “Zaporozhian Sich” is a prototype of the original Sich. It was reproduced by the scientists by the found remains. These remains were flooded by the waters of the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper River. The original Sich was about 10 times larger.

There were 8 Sichs on the territory of Ukraine at different times. 5 Sichs – on the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region, 2 – on the territory of Kherson region, but one and the very first Zaporozhian Sich was located right here on the Khortytsya island. And the Zaporozhian Sich became the most famous.
Zaporozhian Sich is a unique historical and cultural complex that shows the image of the Cossack capital and the atmosphere of the Cossacks’ time. The construction of the complex began in 2004.
This territory has created a unique image, a unique mentality of the Zaporozhian Cossack, a Cossack warrior, a defender of Western Christian values. This is a person who had a great willpower, an unbending fortitude, and was very respectable. Moreover, the Cossacks were literate (historians claim that some Cossacks of the Zaporozhian Sich knew up to 12 languages).
The Sich is the capital of the Cossack lands, but the Cossacks lived not only in the Sich. There was a garrison of about 5 thousand persons in the Sich, and the rest lived outside the Sich, on the territory of “zymivnyky” (house for winter time) or farms. They were engaged in fishing, hunting, agriculture, lived with their wives and children, had a normal life. There were also some Cossacks, who lived in the Sich and never married (they took a vow of celibacy), but these were a minority.
Zaporozhian Sich consists of two parts – the Small Kish (trade and craft suburb) and the Big Kish (Cossack garrison). The whole town is protected by fortifications, defensive towers.
The interior space is also equipped by the Cossack traditions: Cossack kurins (houses, where they lived), a forge (where metal products were made), pottery (with clay products), a tavern (a place where the Cossacks had their meals) and a Greek house (like a hotel) where the ambassadors stayed during their visit to Zaporozhian Sich.
Cossack kurin was the house where the Cossacks lived. It was 18 meters long. There were 38 of such kurins. There was always a smell of a smoke (in Ukrainian “kurylo”) which came from the smoking stove in the kurin. This smoke was transformed into Ukrainian word “kurin”. A kurin is a military and a territorial unit, like a district. Cossacks from one locality tried to settle in one kurin on a territorial basis, so each kurin was called like another cities of Ukraine: Cherkasy, Chernihiv or Kaniv kurin.

Gunhouse in Ukrainian “Pushkarnya” is, the arsenal of the Sich, where cannons, weapons, cannonballs, gunpowder stocks were stored.
There is the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin in the centre of the Sich. All Churches at every Sich at different times were called like that. This church is working, consecrated, divine services, weddings, christenings are performed here, and this is really the central place in the Sich. The main value of this church is the iconostasis, which is over 200 years old.
The Intercession was considered the patroness of the Cossacks and the Feast of the Intercession is celebrated today along with the Cossacks’ Day on October 14th. Now it is also the day of the Defender of Ukraine.
The Cossacks were Orthodox Christians. When the Cossacks retired from military affairs, they often lived in monasteries, donated a lot of money for the activities of churches and monasteries.....

World with a twist - Let's discover the world together!

(Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen).

KYIV/KIEV UKRAINE - Daily Life

Exploring the Newly Renovated Shevchenko Park in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

One of the more incredible things about Ukraine, especially about Kharkov is the quick paced development of the city.
This Shevchenko Park, looked nothing like this just 365 days back.

In just one year this has become immensely beautiful metropolitan styled hang out spot.
Fountains, monuments, children's playpen and what not.
An incredible spot to visit if ever the opportunity arrives.

In this video I take you around the park and share the experience of what a piece of modern Kharkov looks like.

map of Ukraine

Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна, romanized: Ukraïna, pronounced [ʊkrɐˈjinɐ] (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia, which it borders to the east and north-east. Ukraine also shares borders with Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; Romania and Moldova to the south; and has a coastline along the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. It spans an area of 603,628 km2 (233,062 sq mi), with a population of 41.3 million, and is the eighth-most populous country in Europe. The nation's capital and largest city is Kyiv.

The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the loose tribal federation Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation into several principalities in the 13th century and the devastation created by the Mongol invasion, the territorial unity collapsed and the area was contested, divided, and ruled by a variety of powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Tsardom of Russia. A Cossack Hetmanate emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, a Ukrainian national movement for self-determination emerged, and the internationally recognized Ukrainian People's Republic was declared on 23 June 1917. After World War II, the western part of Ukraine merged into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the whole country became a part of the Soviet Union. Ukraine gained its independence in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Following its independence, Ukraine declared itself a neutral state; it formed a limited military partnership with Russia and other CIS countries while also establishing a partnership with NATO in 1994. In 2013, after the government of President Viktor Yanukovych had decided to suspend the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement and seek closer economic ties with Russia, a several-months-long wave of demonstrations and protests known as the Euromaidan began, which later escalated into the Revolution of Dignity that led to the overthrow of Yanukovych and the establishment of a new government. These events formed the background for the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014 and the War in Donbas in April 2014. On 1 January 2016, Ukraine applied for the economic component of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the European Union.

Ukraine is a developing country ranking 74th in the Human Development Index. It is the poorest country in Europe, suffering from a very high poverty rate as well as severe corruption. However, because of its extensive fertile farmlands, Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world. It also maintains the third-largest military in Europe after Russia and France. Ukraine is a unitary republic under a semi-presidential system with separation of powers into legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The country is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the GUAM organization, and the Lublin Triangle, and is one of the founding states of the CIS, even though it never became a member of the organization. The system of Ukrainian subdivisions reflects the country's status as a unitary state (as stated in the country's constitution) with unified legal and administrative regimes for each unit.

Including Sevastopol and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea that were annexed by the Russian Federation in 2014, Ukraine consists of 27 regions: twenty-four oblasts (provinces), one autonomous republic (Autonomous Republic of Crimea), and two cities of special status—Kyiv, the capital, and Sevastopol.
