Revisiting the charming city of Skien in Norway #Skien #Grenland
We are revisiting the beautiful city of Skien. We lived in Skien for 3 1/2 years and we just miss the city so much. There’s no other place in Norway except for Grenland, where we enjoy shopping the most. When we are out to hunt for some good deal sports outfit and casual wear, Grenland is always our destination. Grenland is the district composed of the municipalities of Skien, Porsgrunn, Siljan and Bamble. By the way, Skien-Porsgrunn is considered to be the 7th largest urban area in Norway according to statistics.
There are many attractions Skien has to offer but in this video we weren’t able to show much. Just the Sentrum, Skien church and Brekkeparken. We have other videos of Skien taken in the past. You might want to check them out.

Norway Part I - Oslo, Skien and the Telemark Canal
The first part of this journey takes you from Oslo to Skien in the south, Hendrik Ibsen's city and the starting point for a trip along the Telemark Canal. You will pass through manually operated locks, which are now part of the Unesco World Heritage.
Part II then continues from Skien to the Geirangerfjord and the third part takes us over fantastic mountain scenery to Bergen.

Skien fritidspark is a leisure park located in Skien, Norway. It is large leisure and sports complex with indoor and outdoor facilities. Skien fritidspark is famous for its water park, Badeland. Other facilities include ice skating rink, mini golf, disc golf, curling, climbing park/Klatrepark, hiking trail, sports halls, conference facilities, hotel, wellness spa, etc.
Activity Park opened in 2008, and is the largest investment ever to be made by Skien municipality.
Skien fritidspark was built around Skienshallen from 1968. In 1975 Skienshallen hosted the European Gymnastics Championships, where Nadia Comăneci had her international breakthrough.

Spa og velvære: Her kan du slappe av i en rolig og behagelig atmosfære. I velvære finner du 6 tema badstuer som til sammen vil gi deg en helhetlig opplevelse for både kropp og sjel. I spa avdelingen kan du nyte massasje og ansiktsbehandling. Terapeutene tilbyr også manikyr, pedikyr og hårfjerning.
Ny klatrepark med dobbel zipline på 220 meter! Klatreparken har 7 ulike løyper med spenning både høyt og lavt for store og små! Møt opp i Cafe Pucken i Ishallen, hvor du tar på deg klatreutstyr før opplæring. Deretter er du klar til å frese over banen side om side! Det lønner seg å bestille klartretid på nett. Du kan klatre så lenge du vil innenfor åpningstiden.
Padel er en blanding av squash og tennis. Det spilles vanligvis i double format (4 personer) på en lukket bane i glass. Banen er en tredjedel av størrelsen til en tennisbane.
Banene kan bookes på nett, og er åpne for drop-in. Du kan ta med eget utstyr, eller leie på Cafe Pucken. Sesong fra april – oktober.
Frisbeegolf finner du i parkens uteområde. Frisbeegolf er golf, bare at du bruker frisbee istedenfor køller og kurver istedenfor hull. Frisbeegolfbanen i fritidsparken har 18 kurver, der 1-7 er parkbane, 8-14 er skogsbane og 15-18 er i åpent terreng.
Beachbaner er det fire av i Skien fritidspark, deriblant to beachvolleybaner. Banene er utendørs og har et amfi av gress for publikum. Det er fri bruk av banene.
Skøytebane om vinteren. Stor utendørs skøytebane med skøyteutleie som er åpen alle dager. Skøytesesongen starter vanligvis i begynnelsen av november og varer til midten av mars.
Tur- og løyper finner du rundt i skogen rundt Skien fritidspark. Løypene er på 1 km, 2.5 km og 5 km. Lysløypen har tente lys til kl. 22.00 hver kveld. Det finnes også en naturløype for bevegelseshemmede med rasteplasser.
Curling: er en voksende og utfordrende sport og en utmerket aktivitet når du ønsker å samle kolleger, venner og naboer. Det tilbys 2 timers curling for grupper med instruktør eller curling uten instruktør. Curlingbanen har åpent hele året og baner bestilles på
Minigolf og tennis: Minigolf er en topp aktivitet for barnefamilier, barn og ungdom. 18 hulls-minigolfbane og 4 tennisbaner på kunstgressbanen. Utstyr leies i Cafe Pucken i Ishallen.
Terrengsykkel: her i skogen har Solum Terrengsyklelklubb bygd og merket en kul terrengsykkelløype med flere «hindere». Om du ikke har sykkel kan du leie på hotellet i parken.
Idrettshaller: Skien fritidspark har tre idrettshaller. Skienshallen er 3000 m2 med tribuneplass til 2 800 tilskuere. Flerbrukshallen er 1 000 m2 tilrettelagt for turn, ballidretter, buldring og klatring. Begge hallene kan utenom idrett brukes til messer, konserter og utstillinger. Anlegget har egen ishall med to isflater. Den store isflaten, ishockeybanen, blir mest brukt til organisert trening, kamper og turneringer, mens den lille isen brukes til curling.
Hotell fritidsparken: Sportshotell midt i parken med 65 rom inkludert 10 leiligheter. Her finner du også bobilparkering med 14 oppstillingsplasser og alle fasiliteter.

The movie The Telemark Canal from The Compass Shows is a movie with a duration of 2 hours and 43 minutes.
It shows the entire Telemark Canal in Norway from its beginning in the town Skien to the end in the town Dalen, which is an impressive place with 1000 meter high mountains and the cleanest water.
The trip is shown in a 56-foot motorboat in a way so you should feel like you are sailing the trip yourself.
The Telemark Canal was carved into the mountain well over 100 years ago and when the canal was completed in 1892 it was designated as one of the “eight wonders” in Europe. 500 men had worked for 5 years blowing up their way through the mountain. With a total of 18 lock chambers, the road paved from Skien and to Dalen, a 105 km voyage and with a height difference of 72 meters.
Long before the Telemark canal was built, the locals used rivers and waterways to transport goods and people. The roads in Telemarks were nearly impassable. Carts with wheels were impossible to use in several locations.
The waters made the traffic easier. Barges and boats were used until the waters froze over. During the winter season, the traffic went by horse over the ice.
The canal was called “Hurtigruten” (the fast route) between eastern Norway and Western Norway and was also the most important route between upper and lower Telemark for people, livestock, goods and timber.
Today, there are tourists from near and far who come to experience this unique waterway that looks just like it did a hundred years ago. The stone-walled lock walls, the huge lock gates, the opening and closing mechanism – everything is authentic.
