Aam Khas Bagh at Sirhind The earliest extant Mughal garden all over the Punjab and Haryana is the one at Sirhind, currently known as the Aam Khas Bagh.In fact, it is a garden, a palace and a royal sarai, all in one. The origin of this garden can be traced to the period of Akbar. Sultan Hafiz Rakhna of Herat, the then shiqdar (superintendent) of Sirhind, laid out this garden and erected many other buildings which according to Badaoni, had no parallel in Hind. The first reference to the garden that we come across, was made by Father S.J. Monserrate, the leader of the tirst Jesuit Mission to the court of Akbar. He visited Sirhind in 1580 A.D. and saw the garden for himself. Since Akbar who visited the city in 1556 A.D., does not make any mention of it, this garden appears to have been laid out, most probably, sometime between 1556 and 1580 A.D. After Hafiz Rakhna's death in 1000 A.H./1592 A.D. this garden passed through many hands. In 1617 A.D., Jahangir appointed Khwaja Waisi, the karori (collector of reserved revenue) of Sirhind to keep up the garden, because he was well acquainted with the science of horticulture as well as of buildings. He was specially instructed by the emperor to remove all the trees that had no freshness and to put in fresh ones, to clean up the iraqbandi to repair the old buildings and to erect new ones in the shape of baths, etc., in appropriate places. In the Badshahnama, Abdul Hamid Lahori records Shah Jahan's five visits to Sirhind. On his visit in 1628 A.D. he stayed here for five days, During his stay, he ordered the erection of a few more buildings including Daulat Khana-i-Khas (personal palace), Jharokha Mubarik
(lattice window), Khabgah (sleeping apartments) and Mehtabi Chabutara (moonlit platform) on the sides of the tank. With the advent of Aurangzeb, a puritan zealot, an era of religious persecution commenced. After the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh's innocent children at the hands of Wazir Khan, the governor of Sirhind, in 1704 A.D., this city attracted the wrath of the Sikhs. In 1708 A.D., Banda Bahadur sacked Sirhind and killed Wazir Khan. Later, this city was plundered many times by the irate bands of the Sikhs, the last being in 1763 A.D. when Sirhind was annihilated. It is, therefore, obvious that the Aam Khas Bagh must also have suffered at the hands of the Sikhs. The northern gate served as the main entrance to the first and second enclosures. From this gate begins the first quadrangle of the garden complex, 179 m. by 122 m. in area. It is enclosed by a four metre high wall of brick, adorned with serrated battlements. Each of the four corners of this enclosure is marked by a projected octagonal bastion surmounted by a domed pavilion. On the inner side of the gateway is an extension of the gate, in the form of a house. It appears to be a much later addition made probably when this gate was no longer in use as an entrance. In the centre of this frst quadrangle is the Mehtabi Chabutara, raised under the orders of Shah Jahan. It is a double terraced square platform. On each of its sides is a water chute, down which water rippled from one level to the other platform the emperor may have used to enjoy the spectacle of a moonlit night. Also, here he may have held his court in the open. Through an opening in the southern wall of the first enclosure, we enter the second one which measures 183 m. by 145 m. In its centre is a tank, 98 m. by 85 m. in span with a flight of eight steps on all the four sides. An arched bridge passes over it. This bridge has an octagonal plat- form in its centre and two screen walls on its eastern and western sides. Monserrate mentions a tower in the middle of the tank, from which a pleasant view of the tank and the surrounding garden could be enjoyed. To William Finch, it was a 'summer house'.Fray Sebas- tian Manrique who came here in 1641 A.D., describes it as a 'circular chapel'.

Floating Resturant, Ludhiana Punjab Tourism Sirhind Punjab

Welcome to PUNJAB

Deriving its name from five full-bodied rivers–Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Jhelum, and Chenab–which flow through its vast plains, Punjab is representative of abundant things. Located on the north-western edge of India, it is one of the smaller albeit prosperous states of the nation, and home to a lively, hospitable and dynamic people. Widely acknowledged as the cradle of civilization, it is a land of ethnic and religious diversity, having borne and shaped a number of religious movements that include Sikhism, Buddhism and Sufism. The Punjabi language, too, finds its origin in the Indo-European linguistic family that includes Persian and Latin. Naturally replete with fertile soils and rich water sources, it is primarily an agricultural state, and has continually and infinitely contributed towards the food security of the Indian Republic. Punjab’s many festivals–Teej, Lohri, Basant, and Baisakhi, to name some–are celebrations that mirror the farming ethos. Indeed, Bhangra, the traditional dance of Punjab revolves around, and replicates a farmer’s daily life. Historically, Punjab has played host to a number of ethnicities, including the Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Afghans and Mongols, thus bestowed with a rich tangible heritage. Reflecting this history are the countless sites that dot the state: impressive forts & palaces, ancient monuments, architectural marvels and many a battlefield.

History of Malerkotla ::---Malerkotla, a Muslim majority state was established in 1454 A.D. by Sheikh Sadruddin-i-Jahan from Afghanistan, and was ruled by his Sherwani descendants. The State of Malerkotla was established in 1600 A.D. During the 1947 riots when Punjab was in flames, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence; through it all, it remained a lone island of peace.

The roots of communal harmony date back to 1705, when Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh 9 and 7 year old sons of 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, were ordered to be bricked alive by the governor of Sirhind Wazir Khan. While his close relative, Sher Mohammed Khan, Nawab of Malerkotla, who was present in the court, lodged vehement protest against this inhuman act and said it was against the tenets of the Quran and Islam. Wazir Khan nevertheless had the Sahibzadas tortured and bricked into a section of wall while still alive. At this the Nawab of Malerkotla walked out of the court in protest. Guru Gobind Singh on learning of this kind and humanitarian approach had blessed the Nawab and the people of Malerkotla that the city will live in the peace and happiness . In recognition of this act, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence during partition.

The Haveli Todar Mal Sood popularly known as Jahaz Haveli or Jahaz Mahal is the 17th century residence (haveli) of Todar Mal, who became the diwan in the court of Nawab Wazir Khan, the Governor of Sirhind, under Mughal Empire. Today, it is remembered for the cremation of young martyred sons of Guru Gobind Singh and his mother.

Diwan Todar Mal was a scholar and 'Dewan' in the court of Mughal Nawab of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. and as per account in the Phulkian state gazetteer, he belonged to an Agarwal family of Kakra village, a few miles from Patiala.

In Sikh history, he is remembered for buying a small piece of land at a very huge price saying the world's costliest land ever bought for the cremation of the dead bodies of Mata Gujri, the mother and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, the two younger sons of 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh in 1704 A.D, by paying an exorbitant price to the Wazir Khan Governor Of Sarhind. He had to cover the whole piece of land with gold coins (ashrafis) in a vertical position, as he was asked to vertically place gold coins on the land and only that much land was given to him which he could cover with gold coins. He later also made arrangements for their cremation.[10] But, according to Dr Harjinder Singh Dilgeer, the bodies of all the three were cremated by the descendants of Todar Mall Shahjahani because the latter had already died in 1665-66.

Todar Mal, however had to bear the brunt of Wazir Khan's wrath, and he and his family had to abandon the haveli soon after, and themselves faded into oblivion, with dilapidated building being their only reminder. In the coming years, the haveli fell into rapid disrepair, and collapsed at many place. Though it survived ransacking of Sirhind by Banda Bahadur and during the reign of The Sikh Confederacy, the haveli was left untouched out of respect for Diwan Todar Mal

Also, Sirhind is a big center for the Sufi saints of Islam. This place has the Aam Khas Bagh, a beautiful garden and resthouse built by Babur, the first Mughal Emperor.
