WELCOME TO SIHANOUKVILLE CITY The city’s golden beaches.
The city’s golden beaches originally caught the attention of Cambodia’s jet-setting elite, however, Sihanoukville fell off the map during the tragic and violent reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Years later, it was “rediscovered” and revitalized by the backpacking crowd, evolving into a lazy beach town.
These days, Sihanoukville is now the premier backpacker party city in Cambodia. It’s also popular with, Russian and Chinese tourists who are rapidly changing the face of the city.
While I think the city is a fun place to party, traveling here isn’t going to “wow” you. In fact, the city has become a bit of a mess due to construction, pollution, and casinos in recent years. It’s not very appealing except for a small strip of land by the dock.
That said, the islands off the coast are still a backpacker and budget traveler paradise, so Sihanoukville is still good for a night as you transit to/from the islands.

Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is a coastal city in Cambodia and the capital of Sihanoukville Province, at the tip of an elevated peninsula in the country's south-west on the Gulf of Thailand.
Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation whose landscape spans low-lying plains, the Mekong Delta, mountains and Gulf of Thailand coastline. Phnom Penh, its capital, is home to the art deco Central Market, glittering Royal Palace and the National Museum's historical and archaeological exhibits. In the country's northwest are the ruins of Angkor Wat, a massive stone temple complex built during the Khmer Empire.

SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia ???????? - 4K 60fps
Sihanoukville is a coastal city in Cambodia. It's known for its beaches like Otres Beach and Serendipity Beach as well as nearby islands like Koh Rong which used to be popular for snorkeling and diving. Now it is known by tourists as one of the most ugly concrete cities while Koh Rong Sanloem also dropped in popularity due some inner-island tourism conflicts also due to foreign investments ( ).
Over the past years Sihanoukville has seen investments from China, transforming it from a quiet Cambodian town to a Chinese influenced city. During my first visit in 2015 I walked around with good memories yet the Sihanoukville of today is almost unrecognizable of the place even just 8-10 years ago.
With an increase of Chinese investments many high-rises and casinos were started. Many of the constructions did not get finished leaving the city with several concrete shells. It seems unclear whether or when the abandoned constructions will resume making Sihanoukville an interesting case on the influence of foreign investment.
On this tour we start at the Ou Chheuteal Beach and walk towards downtown Sihanoukville. We pass abandoned constructions all the way to Phsar Leu Market before we turn around and see the city during nighttime. After another pass along the beach, which is now lined with mostly Chinese restaurants, we end this walking tour of Sihanoukville.

We visit Long Beach and Sok San beach which has the whitest sand and crystal clear water, and get to see plenty of fish and coral while we snorkel around the tiny island called Kaoh Toch.
