Srirangapatna Fort Mandya Tourism Srirangapatna Tourism Thomas Inman's Dungeon Inmman Dungeon

Srirangapatna Fort Mandya Tourism Srirangapatna Tourism Mysore Tourism Karnataka Tourism. Srirangapatna Fort is a historical fort located in Srirangapatna, the historical capital city in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Built by the Timmanna Nayaka in 1454, the fort came to prominence during the rule of Tipu Sultan. The fort was fully fortified and the architecture was modified with the help of French architects to meet the growing needs of saving against invaders. The river Kaveri surrounds the fort in one of the sides. The fort is protected in the West and Northern directions by river Cauvery. The fort had Lal Mahal and Tipu's palace, which were demolished during the British capture of 1799. There are seven outlets and two dungeons. History of Srirangapatna fort dates back to 15th century CE. The original mud fort in this location was built in 1454 AD by a local chieftain of the region Timmanna Hebbar, under the patronage of the Vijayanagara empire. The fort is believed to have been built by Timmanna Nayaka, a ruler of Vijayanagar Empire in 1454 CE. The fort was in the hands of the Empire till 1495 when the Wodeyars overpowered the Vijayanagar rulers. The fort was subsequently changing hands between Nawab of Arcot, Peshwas and the Marathas. The Wodeyars moved their capital from Mysore to Srirangapatna and established the fort as the seat of the empire. The region and the fort made progressive changes during the rule of Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar during the years 1673 to 1704, but the three subsequent rulers had no impact. During the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1734–66), the kingdom became a strong military force and came under the control of the military general Hyder Ali.Hyder Ali, had to cede the fort to the invading Marathas for 32 lakh rupees during 1757, but he came back strongly to gain it back. During 1782, Tipu Sultan, the son of Hyder Ali took the reign of the fort and built fortifications. Tipu was invaded many times by the British forces. Tipu had agreements with the French and even had letters sent to Napoleon. After several unsuccessful attempts, British forces under the command of Colonel Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, made an attack on 4 May 1799 under the covers. The forces had 2,494 British soldiers and 1,882 Indian troops. The soldiers were asked to wait in trenches and started the advancement across the river during the mid day when the watchmen of the fort used to rest. The account of the offensive is found in the accounts of Colonel Beatson.Tipu was killed in the battle and the English had a treaty with the Wodeyar queen. Lord Mornington commanded the forces and the battle is considered one of the turning point in the colonization strategy of the East Indian Company.
This Fort has four main entrances and has a double wall defense system, which is what makes it one of the toughest forts. Most of the fort was demolished by British during Fourth Mysore War in 1799.
Often quoted as the second most formidable forts in India, the Srirangapatna fort is located in Sriringapatna island. The torrential Kaveri ( Cauvery) made the Srirangapatna into a difficult to cross island. That offered the natural defense to the fortification. Tippu Sultan rebuilt, the fort with many ingenuous military architectural techniques of those days.
There are two dungeons in the lower chambers of the fort that were used to imprison captured British officers. Tipu's residence was also housed within the Fort.
This double enclosure fort is built with massive granite blocks, that is abundant in this region. The inside of the fort rampant are made of mud and rubble masonry.

Srirangapatna is a town and headquarters of one of the seven Taluks of Mandya district, in the Indian State of Karnataka. It gets its name from the Ranganthaswamy temple consecrated at around 984 CE. Later, under the British rule the city was renamed to Seringapatnam. Located near the city of Mandya, it is of religious, cultural and historic importance.
The monuments on the island town of Srirangapatna have been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the application is pending on the tentative list of UNESCO.
Srirangapatna has since time immemorial been an urban center and place of pilgrimage. During the Vijayanagar empire, it became the seat of a major viceroyalty, from where several nearby vassal states of the empire, such as Mysore and Talakad, were overseen. When perceiving the decline of the Vijayanagar empire, the rulers of Mysore ventured to assert independence, Srirangapatna was their first target. Raja Wodeyar I vanquished Rangaraya, the then viceroy of Srirangapatna, in 1610 and celebrated the Navaratri festival in the town that year. It came to be accepted in time that two things demonstrated control and signified sovereignty over the Kingdom of Mysore by any claimant to the throne, including the successful holding of the 10-day-long Navaratri festival, dedicated to Chamundeshwari, patron goddess of Mysore and control of the fort of Srirangapatna, the fortification nearest to the capital city of Mysore.
Srirangapatna remained part of the Kingdom of Mysore from 1610 to after India's independence in 1947; as the fortress closest to the capital city of Mysore, it was the last bastion and defence of the kingdom in case of invasion.

Hale Sethuway Street
Srirangapatna became the capital of Mysore under Hyder Ali and Tipu sulthan When Tipu finally dispensed with the charade of deference to the Wodeyar Maharaja who was actually his captive, and proclaimed the Khudadad State under his own kingship, though the then incumbent Wodeyar scion Chamaraja Wodeyar IX was still officially the king of Mysore.
During Tipu Sultan's wars against the British, Kodavas, and Malabar rajas; he rounded up entire communities of Nairs, Kodavas, and Mangalorean Catholics in the conquered regions and deported them to Srirangapatna, where they were held in bondage until they received freedom from captivity as a result of Tipu's defeat by the British in 1799.
Treaty of Seringapatam, 1792

The Treaty of Seringapatam (also called Srirangapatna), signed 18 March 1792, ended the Third Anglo-Mysore War. Its signatories included Lord Cornwallis on behalf of the British East India Company, representatives of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maratha Empire, and Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore.

BRINDAVAN GARDENS, MYSORE

The Brindavan Gardens is a garden located 12 k.ms from the city of Mysore in the Mandya District of the Indian State of Karnataka. It lies adjoining the Krishnarajasagara Dam which is built across the river Kaveri. The work on laying out this garden was started in the year 1927 and completed in 1932.Visited by close to 2 million tourists per year, the garden is one of the major attractions of Srirangapatna. Sir Mirza Ismail, the Deewan of Mysore, a man with a penchant for gardens, founded the Brindavan Gardens (Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in particular) and built the Cauvery River high-level canal to irrigate 120,000 acres (490 km2) in modern Mandya district.[citation needed] He was inspired by Hyder Ali who had earlier built the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens at Bangalore.

Daria Daulat Bagh also famously known as Tipu Sultan's summer palace in Srirangapatna is a must visit tourist place. The whole palace is converted into a museum with a lot of paintings on the walls and pillars. It is a classic example for Indo-islamic architecture. On the walls, ceilings and pillars you can notice the beautiful floral paintings. The rich royal blue, red and green colours pop out beautifully with the ray of sunlight.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple | Srirangapatna, Mandya, Mysore, India | KSTDC Trip to Mysore

About this Video -
Conducted tour by KARNATAKA STATE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION or KSTDC. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of Karnataka, India's largest and most revered shrines. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this Temple stands beautifully in Srirangapatna in the Mandya District, a culturally rich town near Mysore city. The name of this town has also been derived from this temple.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is about 14 km from Mysore. From Bangalore, this town is at a distance of 125 km. The best time to visit the Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple is during Kotarothsava festival. This festival which is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha is celebrated with great vigor and grandeur.
It is one of the five important pilgrimage sites of Sri Vaishnavism along the river Kaveri for devotees of Ranganatha. These five sacred sites are together known as Pancharanga Kshetrams in Southern India. Since Srirangapatna is the first temple starting from upstream, the deity is known as Adi Ranga.
The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a monument of national importance. According to the ASI, the temple is one of considerable antiquity.
The temple has an imposing tower over the entrance gate (gopura) and two large concentric rectangular enclosures (prakara) around its perimeter. The tower over the entrance bears features consistent with Vijayanagara architecture. The entrance to the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) is through multiple columned halls (mantapa). A vestibule (sukhanasi), hall (navaranga or just mantapa) and a front hall (mukhamantapa) are the other main structures in the temple. The roof of the mukhamantapa is decorated with a garland (hara) of miniature decorative towers (called kudu and sala shikharas) whose niches contain stucco images of the god Vishnu.
In the sanctum, the image of Vishnu reclines on the coils of the snake Adisesha, under a canopy formed by the snake's seven hoods, with his consort Lakshmi at his feet.
An inscription at the temple reveals it was first consecrated in 984 A.D. by a local chief called Tirumalaiah, a vassal of the Western Ganga dynasty. In the early 12th century, Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana (r.1108-1152) granted the village of Srirangapatna to the Vaishnava saint Ramanujacharya as an agraharam (place of learning). An inscription of the great Hoysala King Veera Ballala II (1210 A.D.) confirms that additions and renovations were made to the temple at that time.
Timings of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple are from 07.30 am to 01.00 pm. It again opens for devotees in the evenings from 04.00 pm to 08.00 pm. As on December 2018, no fee for general entry. But Rs. 250 per person for Quick Darshan and Rs. 50 per person for Viswaroopa Seva.
