Places to see in ( Motherwell - UK )

Places to see in ( Motherwell - UK )

Motherwell is a large town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, south east of Glasgow. Historically part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for both North Lanarkshire Council, which is one of Scotland's most populous local authority areas, and of Police Scotland Q division.

At the start of the 20th century Motherwell stood a large and growing industrial centre, a town of 37,000 people and a wide variety of heavy industries such as munitions, trams and bridge components. By the 1930s most of Scotland’s steel production was in Motherwell, and owned by the Colville family. In 1959 the Colville family were persuaded by the government to begin work of a vast new steel works, which would become Ravenscraig.

Motherwell hosted the National Mòd in 1983. Strathclyde Park previously hosted the major Scottish music festival, T in the Park, until 1996, when it was moved to a disused airfield in Balado, Kinross-shire. It has also hosted other music festivals such as Retrofest. Modern authors Des McAnulty and Mark Wilson have written novels of critical acclaim which are based in the town (LIFE IS LOCAL, McAnulty) and neighbouring town Bellshill (BOBBY'S BOY, Wilson).

The town has three stations, the main railway station (known simply as Motherwell), Airbles and Shieldmuir. The main station runs on the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow to London and on the East Coast Main Line via Edinburgh and Newcastle, and is located next to Motherwell Shopping Centre. National train operators; Virgin Trains, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express, pass through the main station, but not all stop there.

Motherwell is very accessible, as it is right next to the M74 motorway beside the River Clyde. This road leads to Cumbria on the Anglo-Scottish border, where it becomes the M6. Some of the places that can be accessible by bus from Motherwell:

Wishaw
Hamilton
Bellshill
East Kilbride
Coatbridge
Airdrie
Glasgow
Carluke
Lanark
Larkhall
Law
Shotts

There are many places of interest that have made Motherwell a place to visit. As well as the town's Country Park, The North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre, formerly the Motherwell Heritage Centre on High Road, situated next to the town's railway station, is a building that displays the history of Motherwell from the Roman era. The building also has a viewing tower on the fifth floor, giving visitors a good view of the town and other parts of Lanarkshire, as well as of mountains as far back as Ben Lomond.

Motherwell also has a Civic Centre, situated next to the town's police station and North Lanarkshire headquarters building. A number of pantomimes and musicals have taken place in the centre's large concert hall. As well as this, the Masters Snooker has also been an event held at the Civic Centre. Renovations have been completed, and the building has now re-opened for business.

The Dalzell House is a building that is situated to the south of the town, right on the banks of the River Clyde. This house is protected as a Category-A listed building. One of the main attractions in Motherwell is the M&D's Amusement Park, which is situated next to Strathclyde Loch in Strathclyde Park. It is now recognised as Scotland's Theme Park.

One main place of interest that is well known in Motherwell is The Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Good Aid, popularly known as Motherwell Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic Cathedral which is the Mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Motherwell.

( Motherwell - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Motherwell . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Motherwell - UK

The Town of Livingston Scotland UK @ NOAH'S TRAVEL S2E33

DAY 8 OF 8 DAY LONDON/EDINBURGH VACATION MARCH 18, 2020

Livingston is situated in the Almond Valley, 13 miles west of Edinburgh. Built in 1962, it was the fourth of several so-called 'New Towns', and further developed in the The area around Livingston was previously an important shale oil area, the world's first oil boom occurred in West Lothian. This was based on oil extracted from shale, and by 1870 over 3 million tons of shale were being mined each year in the area around Livingston. Output declined with the discovery of liquid oil reserves around the world in the early 1900s, but shale mining only finally ceased in 1962. The bings that characterise oil shale mining in West Lothian have largely been flattened. Two shale bings nearby are scheduled monuments. In 1898 Livingston had several houses, a Church of Scotland church, a United Free church and a school. Around 1 mile north of Livingston there was a railway station in a settlement called Livingston Station which is now part of Deans. The old part of Livingston is now called Livingston Village.. At the heart of Scotland's 'Silicon Glen', hi-tech industry flourished and helped the growth of the town until the 1990s. Today a large retail centre proves popular with locals and visitors alike. Livingston was built as part of the New Towns Act of 1946, in part to ease overcrowding in Glasgow. Livingston was the fourth new town of five. The others were East Kilbride, Glenrothes, Cumbernauld and Irvine. Livingston was designated as a New Town on 16 April 1962.[4] The first people moved into Livingston in April 1966. Three villages (Livingston Village and Livingston Station in the old parish of Livingston and Bellsquarry in the parish of Mid Calder) and numerous farmsteads remain islands of old buildings within the new developments. In 1984 Livingston gained its first railway station on the Shotts Line called Livingston South which was followed by Livingston North on the Edinburgh to Bathgate Line in 1986. These stations replaced the former Livingston and Newpark stations which had closed before the construction of the town. In 1995 Livingston gained its professional football team, Livingston F.C. which was essentially the relocation of Meadowbank Thistle F.C. from Edinburgh.

Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia at the 2019 British Pipe Band Championships at Paisley

Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band competing in the Grade One competition at the 2019 RSPBA's British Pipe Band Championships held on 18 May in Paisley at the St James' Playing Fields.

This is the band's debut performance at a major championship with its new pipe major, Emmett Conway. The band's Lead Drummer is Andrew Lawson.

Great to hear the band playing what will be a new tune to many - The Stirlingshire Militia, a march written by the famous nineteenth century piper, Hugh Mackay who died in Stirling in 1864. I thinki this is the tune's first appearance on this channel.

Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia's MSR set was:

March: The Stirlingshire Militia [Hugh Mackay (1801 - 1864)]
Strathspey: Blair Drummond (traditional)
Reel: John Morrison of Assynt House ([Peter R. MacLeod (1878 - 1965)]

4K|Edinburgh's River Almond.A Walk to Explore the Nature|Scotland|Uk

The River Almond is a river in Lothian that rises at Hirst Hill in Lanarkshire near Shotts and running through West Lothian, draining into the Firth of Forth at Cramond. The name Almond is simply old Celtic for river

The industrial heritage of central Scotland can be observed along the length of the river with numerous weirs, remains of mills and other riverside industries of the past. The shale industry played a big part of the rivers development and a number of shale bings can be found within the catchment.

The course of the river runs through the Midland Valley Sill and Carboniferous sedimentary rocks  (330 million years old) before entering the Firth of Forth beside Cramond Island. The Sill formed when hot magma worked its way between rock layers and cooled slowly underground. The resulting igneous rock layers extended far and wide; locally they can be rediscovered at Snab Point, but regionally can be seen as far away as Stirling and the Lomond Hills in Fife. The dramatic contrast between hard igneous 'microgabbro' rock and the sedimentary rocks give a variety of river sections. Grotto Bridge sits within the igneous rock and has a variety of waterfalls and rapids. The softer sedimentary layers are best viewed at Fair-a-far Iron Mill where a weir breaks the flow and 'cross-beds' can be seen in the opposing cliff face. These are signatures that the sandstone was deposited in an ancient river, far earlier than when the Almond began to flow.
