The Seminary Ridge Museum celebrates the first day of the battle of Gettysburg, and the Heritage Center gives you an interactive glimpse into it. You can also get a unique experience by visiting the diorama or seeing the cat soldiers at Civil War Trails.
Almost every building in Gettysburg still has scars from the war, and that includes several important historical houses. Visit Eisenhower’s only home outside of the White House or the David Wills House where Lincoln stayed while delivering the Gettysburg Address. See how the war impacted daily life at the Shriver family house or the home of the battle’s only civilian casualty, Jennie Wade.

Touring Gettysburg is one of the best ways to see everything it has to offer. Go on a ghost tour for a taste of the paranormal, the Savor Gettysburg Food Tour for a taste of its many wonderful restaurants, or the Adams County Pour Tour to sample some adult beverages. Gettysburg is an apple-picking haven, and you can taste the fruits of its orchards at Hollabaugh Bros. If you prefer something sweeter, go to Mr. Ed’s Elephant Museum or Mr. G’s Ice Cream. Downtown Gettysburg is perfect for shoppers and history buffs with its range of options for old buildings and unique shops.

U.S. Route 11 or U.S. Highway 11 (US-11) is a major north–south United States Numbered Highway extending 1,645 miles (2,647 km) across the eastern U.S. The southern terminus of the route is at US 90 in Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in eastern New Orleans, Louisiana. The northern terminus is at the Rouses Point–Lacolle 223 Border Crossing in Rouses Point, New York. The route continues across the border into Canada as Route 223. US 11, created in 1926, maintains most of its original route. The route north of Knoxville, Tennessee, follows a route similar to Interstate 81 (I-81). While it is signed as a north–south route, it physically travels in a northeast–southwest direction. Until 1929, US 11 ended just south of Picayune, Mississippi, at the Pearl River border with Louisiana. It was extended through Louisiana after that. The Maestri Bridge, which carries US 11 across Lake Pontchartrain, served as the only route to New Orleans from the east for six weeks after Hurricane Katrina due to its sturdy construction. The storm virtually destroyed the I-10 Twin Span Bridge and damaged the Fort Pike Bridge on US 90. I-81, constructed in the 1960s, parallels the route of US 11 in many areas. Beyond I-81's southern terminus, other Interstates run along corridors paralleling US 11, specifically I-59, which is joined to I-81 by I-40, I-75, and I-24. Heading generally northeast, US-11 passes through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York.

Review: Hiking with the Dog at the Shippensburg Trailhead of Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

In this episode, Cool Places Across American with C&L takes our dog Leroy to the Shippensburg (PA) trailhead of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail for a hike. Afterwards, since there is a dog park almost next to the trailhead, we give Leroy a chance to make new friends before finding ice cream as a treat.

In an earlier episode, we explored the Newville (PA) trailhead of this same trail. If you missed it, you can find it at

The Shippensburg trailhead that we used was at the Shippensburg Township Park, located at 304 Britton Road, Shippensburg. This trailhead offers plenty of parking, restrooms with running water, historical markers, picnic tables, and a childrens playground. An interesting feature of this trailhead is special parking for equestrian trailers, and there is a special horse mounting block.

During our hike, we went 1.6 miles from the township park to a farm crossing before turning around and returning to the trailhead. The trail is very flat and had one road crossing. For the most part, the trail is cinder with the exception of a few macadem spots located near the road crossing and the trailhead.

You can find out more about the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail via

In this episode, we also visited Leo's Homemade Ice Cream, which is ranked one of the best ice cream stores in the country. It is located at 816 West High Street in Carlisle. You can learn more about Leo's via

While at Leo's, Lori enjoyed a scoop of Almond Joy ice cream, while Chuck had teaberry flavored ice cream.

Music in this episode includes the following:

Melt by Tommy English
Nothing's Funner Than Summer by Freckleland
On The Double by Rob Barbato
Pop Topper by Spanish Anchors
Adrenalize by Root Basket
Evergreen by Morgan Kibby
Blue Mountains by Gabriel Witcher

All video shot on an iPhone. Video production completed using iMovie.

Exploring the Allegheny National Forest | Visit ANF

The Allegheny National Forest is a VERY special place. It encompasses 513,000 acres of beautiful, pristine wilderness in northwest Pennsylvania. I had the pleasure of spending the weekend in a portion of the forest I've never visited before near Bradford, PA. I camped in Willow bay, hiked the Rimrock trail, fly fished and kayaked on the Allegheny Resivor, and walked the Kinzua Skywalk. I HIGHLY recommend visiting the Allegheny National Forest and Bradford - both are spectacular!
