Places to see in ( Shifnal - UK )

Places to see in ( Shifnal - UK )

Shifnal is a market town and civil parish in Shropshire, England, about 3 miles east of Telford. It has a railway station on the Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton Line and is near the M54 motorway. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 6,391, increasing to 6,776 at the 2011 census.

The town, also once known as Idsall (relating to potential Roman links), most probably began as an Anglian settlement, established by the end of the 7th century. Shifnal is thought to be the place named Scuffanhalch in a 9th-century charter, as a possession of the monastery at Medeshamstede (later Peterborough Abbey). Though this seems a dubious claim, and the ancient charter is in fact a 12th-century forgery, the full picture is more complex.

Unusually, the name of the town has alternated through the centuries between Idsall and Shifnal. Idsall is mentioned in a 9th-century charter as Iddeshale, meaning Idi's nook or corner. A nook is said to be an area of land of approximately 20 acres (81,000 m2). It is often conjectured that the two names of Idsall and Shifnal were names of settlements on the east and west sides respectively of Wesley Brook, a brook which runs through the town, and is a tributary of the River Worfe.

Shifnal had something of an early industrial revolution during the late 16th century with the construction of a charcoal fired blast furnace near to the Manor House. A fire swept through the town on 7 July 1591, setting alight the roof of the church. The fire is thought to have been started by a maidservant's candle that accidentally set fire to some hanging flax. The fire devastated many, if not all, of the buildings east of the brook now known as Wesley Brook. The church and the timber-framed Old Idsall House at its foot to the east (a listed building), are said to be the only two buildings to have survived the fire that destroyed the rest of the settlement.

A community library run by the council is located on Broadway. The Millennium Sensory Garden lies between St Andrew's Church and Innage Road and contains the town's war memorial. The garden is voluntarily maintained by a dedicated group of committee members and friends and obtained the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award 2003 and Green Pennant Award 2007/08. Shifnal Police Station is located behind the library on Broadway.

Naughty Nell's public house, a restored 16th century coaching inn, originally known as the Unicorn, claims to have been the home of Nell Gwyn and her renowned bedchamber. It had been known by her name itself for some time. The building was sold in auction recently (2011) and is now vacant and awaiting some works.

Double Headed Castles storm the Lickey! | 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe & 7029 Clun Castle | 10/6/23

Today’s video is an epic, so sit back and enjoy 7 minutes’ worth of Castle thrash! GWR Castle classes 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 7029 Clun Castle were hauling the doubly named 'Castle Centenarian' and 'Welsh Marches Express' tour from Tyseley on a circular tour to Hereford via Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and the Welsh Marches, then returning via Newport, Gloucester and the Lickey Incline! This tour has seen many alterations done to its route and strikes so it was good to finally see it go ahead. It’s 100 years since the design of these awesome locomotives, and 5043 is my favourite so this was a highly enjoyable day. This run was also historically significant as it's 5043's first assault of the Lickey.

I started out at 07:50 from my local, grabbing a TfW service out of Birmingham up to Wolverhampton, and cycling up to Codsall. I set up there, unfortunately some people further down the platform obscured the view, a 196 rolled in and drowned out the sound, and the sun bleached the quality, so this really wasn't what it could have been despite the Castles' great performance. The Castles were also looking absolutely beautiful. I then caught a service over to Shifnal and set up there, once again the sun was causing me a lot of hassle. Although I got a good shot, the Castles seemed to be taking it easy and I also missed my Birmingham bound service because they were 14 late.

After this I headed back to Birmingham, changing and heading into Barnt Green, from where I cycled out to Vigo Bridge on the Lickey Incline, the steepest gradient on the mainline in Britain, a sustained 2 miles of 1/37 rise. I arrived there at 1pm, with nearly 5 hours' wait in store I did some work and enjoyed the company of @harnettyrailways, @blackcountrysteamvideos8021, @WestCountrySteamVideos, @LiamsLocos, @LukeAlfordUKsteam, @FlatCapJack52 and @jamieleestransporthub! The castles came thrashing up, I could hear them as far away as Stoke Works Jn and passing through Bromsgrove!! Thankfully the 47 was doing nothing, and with a recently wetted railhead, the castles' job was by no means easy, an equivalent load of 14 coaches!! They handled it very well, with 5043 appearing to be doing the lion's share of their assault on the 1 in 37 incline. This was amazing and I'll never forget the incredible noise of the Castle bark but soon after we were drenched in a thunderstorm lol.

The weather was strange today, up to 28* recorded with clear blue skies the whole day, although it became stormy a couple of hours before the castles' arrival. Thanks to Vintage trains, NR, everyone I met and to the drivers of the trains for putting up with our antics as we waited. Thanks particularly to the Castles and their crew, today won't have been easy! Also a massive thanks to whoever decided not to use the 47 - good decision!

I hope you enjoy as I did!

Banbury Country Park, Oxfordshire | Exploring England

Banbury Country Park, in Oxfordshire, is a relatively new park on a 30-acre land. Accessible by the canal towpath, it is a haven for wildlife and helps maintain biodiversity in the area. It is currently consisting of the tranquil lake, with continuing plans to expand.

After Cherwell District Council declared a climate emergency in July, it is ramping up its efforts to tackle the area's carbon footprint by planting 30,000 trees in a new woodland. Meaning the park is going to be continuously growing for a while, so maybe in a couple of years time, this video will need updating.

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR Cave Of Gnostic Secrets - Hidden In The Woods. Shifnal Shropshire England

Join Third Rate content as we disappear down a human sized rabbit hole under a tree in the woods near Shifnal in Shropshire England which may sound like something from Alice In Wonderland but in reality turns out to be something nearly as mad.
In the cave underneath is a strange place carved out of the sandstone which some say may be 700 years old and fashioned by the legendary Warrior Monks the Knights Templar themselves after they were unjustly accused of heresy by the king of France Phillip the Bell and were dissolved as one of the pillars of medieval society and went underground figuratively and maybe literally.
See what you think and be sure to tell us in the comments ????????

Shifnal Station 25/7/20

Shifnal Station is located on the line between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury, the line is used as a direct link to Mid and North Wales which avoids going via Crewe.

The line is served by both Transport For Wales (TFW) and West Midlands Railway services, however for the most part apart from a few services operated by TFW only West Midlands Railway stop here with (TFW) services being classed as limited stop services and only calling at Telford and Wellington on their way between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury and beyond.

Medieval Fortress Ludlow castle Shropshire

This week on Third Rate content, we explore the king of the Marcher fortresses Ludlow Castle!

Situated nearly on top of the Shropshire/Herefordshire border and only miles away from Wales Ludlow castle was an integral part of the Normans defences against Wales.

At other times the Castle was a staging area for troops on their way to take part in the Norman incursions into Ireland

Later When relations with the Welsh improved Ludlow Castle became a super important administrative centre presiding over the entire nation of Wales!

Of course this romantic ruin has tales of ghosts and other goings on which we will investigate along with everything else on today’s video.

Buckle up and I’ll see you out here!
