GAYA Food Tour I World Famous TILKUT, ANARSA & MAGHAI PAAN I FUSION Chaat, HUGE Imarti, Aloo Kachalu

► More street food in Patna:

Continuing with our culinary quest, we have arrived at the ancient holy city of Gaya. Also known as the land of enlightenment and salvation, Gaya is a sacred place for Hindu, Buddhist and Jain devotees alike. Since it is frequented by a large number of tourists and pilgrims, this second largest city of Bihar boasts of a vibrant street food scenario that is dominated by traditional fares. So let's take you on an immersive street food tour of Gaya.

Before starting with our eating spree we first visited the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh gaya. It is one of the major Buddhist worship sites in the world. It being the revered place where Lord Buddha had attained Enlightenment, the sprawling premises was full of monks and other devotees who have arrived here to seek divine blessings. On emerging from the temple complex, we noticed a few eating joints, primarily selling Tibetan fares. Here we savoured a fresh phaley bread and some rice noodles soup. Both the dishes procured from women vendors were deliciously hearty.

We then set out for Gaya. On reaching there we first offered our prayers at the famous Vishnupada temple and then began the food tour. The first stop was Rajasthan Bhojnalay where the no onion garlic Bihari thali impressed us with its home styled taste and affordability.

The second destination was a family run chaat centre named Kesari chat. Here polished off a plate of palak paneer chat which was uniquely zesty. This was followed by an equally brilliant and surprising aloo malpua.

As we kept walking looking for the next stop, we came by a humble open tea stall and stopped there for some lemon tea. From there we went to have a humongous imarti from Sri Ganinnath Imarti Bhandar, which is probably the best imarti shop in the city. The hot syrup laden crisp orangish loop was simply delicious.

We then took a paan break at Mathura paan. The classic Maghai Paan cleansed our palate and primed it for more food. Here we got to learn about the different varieties of suparis.

Next was the turn of Gaya's renowned Tilkut. It is a traditional sweet made with sugar and sesame seeds. At Jauhar ji's shop we got the opportunity to witness the complex and laborious process of making these Tilkuts. It is fascinating to see so many people engaged in this elaborate task. We loved the pleasantly sweet and nutty taste of these Tilkuts. They were so amazing that we even got some packed.

As the food tour kept extending with local inputs, we took another tea break to energise ourselves for the upcoming stops. This was followed by aloo kachalu and some nimki. The former one, a spicy, tangy and savoury mix of boiled potatoes with spices that was served in a leaf plate.

Our penultimate stop was Jai shree Ram Tilkut Bhandaar. We were there to try a very special Bihari sweet called Anarsa. These ghee fried rice flour based dough balls were so delicious. We also tried some kala jamun and samosas that are the two best selling items at this place.

The final destination of this immersive food tour, that spanned for the whole day was aloo dum papdi chaat vendor. Both the dish and the vendor selling it were quite fascinating. This robust snack was a potpourri of nearly 4 to 5 curries.

With it we wrapped up this surfeit food tour that acquainted us with so many wonderful flavours contained in the lanes of Gaya.

Ep 3 Vishnupad Temple - Pind daan Gaya ji Dham | Dhanarua Lai laddu, Patna Sahib Gurudwara

We started the Bihar tour from Patna, After visiting Rajgir we travelled to Gaya and then we returned back to Patna.

This is a 4 day tour and this episode is about last day of our Bihar tour.

Following are the places we visited and the food we explored during this journey from Gaya to Patna.

Date of Journey - 9th feb 2023.

Vishnupad Temple - We started our day visiting an ancient temple, near the banks of Phalgu river. Which is a popular place for Hindu in India where rituals (Pind daan) related to the departed soul takes place to attain moksha.

If you wish to see the BTS of this episode that was uploaded on our other channel: Harish Bali travels.

Dhanarua - This place has 30 to 40 shops that sell Lai laddu, Location distance 75 km from Gaya. Lai ka laddu is famous in Gaya but more famous in Dhanarua.

Pot Belly - This restaurant is located in Bihar Museum in patna. we wanted to try Bihar delicacies which I could not try during this tour. We had Litti Chokha - Rs 340.

Food at this restaurant was good but later on i was told that there are many other restaurants in Patna make Batti chokha as this one is expensive but taste was good.

Takhat Sri harimandir Ji (Patna Sahib) - It is one of the 5 Takhat for Sikhs, This is where Guru Gobind Singh ji was born.

We wanted to visit the Gurudwara where Guru Gobind Singh ji has spent his childhood but because of paucity of time we could not go inside the Gurudwara.
I will travel again to patna sometime in future and visit other destinations again and explore local food.

If in case you missed our previous episode of Bihar Series

The Phalgu or Falgu, a river that flows past Gaya, India in the Indian state of Bihar, is a sacred river for Hindus and Buddhists. Lord Vishnu's Temple Vishnupad Mandir is situated on the bank of Phalgu river.

#Falgu_Nadi #Falgu_River #फल्गु_नदी #Gaya #Bihar #Incredible_India

Course :
The Phalgu is formed by the confluence, some 3 kilometres (2 mi) below Bodh Gaya, of the Lilajan (also called Niranjan or Nilanjan) and the Mohana, two large hill streams each of which is over 270 metres (300 yd) wide. The Phalgu is also mentioned as Niranjan. The united stream flows on to the north past the town of Gaya, where it attains a breadth of over 820 metres (900 yd). The Phalgu here passes by a high rocky bank, on the steep sides of which are many paved stairs leading down to the river bed, while high above are the Vishnupad Mandir, with many minor shrines around it. It then runs in a north-easterly direction for about 27 kilometres (17 mi), and opposite the Barabar hills it again takes the name of Mohana, and divides into two branches which eventually flow into a branch of the Punpun.

History :
Women performing Chhath Puja in the river Phalgu in Gaya
The portion of the course of the Phalgu flowing by Gaya is sacred to the Hindus. It is the first holy site visited by the pilgrim and here his first offering must be made for the souls of his ancestors. According to the Gaya Mahatmya, which forms part of the Vayu Purana, the Phalgu is the embodiment of Vishnu himself. One tradition states that it formerly flowed with milk.
According to Hindu belief, the soul wanders after death until pindadan, or religious service seeking salvation for the dead from the cycle of rebirth, is performed. The fortnight-long pitrapaksh period is considered auspicious to offer pindadan. The 15 days of the waning moon during the Hindu month of Ashvin are known as pitrapaksh. Pindadan is traditionally offered on the banks of the Phalgu at Gaya. It is mandatory for Hindu devotees offering pindadan to shave their heads and take a holy dip and head for the Baitarni pond. The prayers are performed at the Vishnupad Mandir. Priests, known as Gaywal-pandas, conduct the ritual. Thousands of Hindus visit Gaya for the purpose of pindadan.

Hinduism :
There is reference to the city of Gaya and the Phalgu in the Ramayana in which it says that Sita had cursed the Phalgu River. There is an interesting story and the purana states that on account of this curse, the Phalgu lost its water, and the river is simply a vast stretch of sand dunes. According to history, in the absence of Rama, his wife Sita offered pinda on its banks to Dasharatha father of Rama.
The story goes that Rama, along with his brothers and Sita, came to Gaya to perform the sacred rites for his father, Dasaratha. When the brothers were bathing in the river, Sita was sitting on the banks, playing with the sand. Suddenly, Dasaratha appeared out of the sand, and asked for the Pindam, saying he was hungry. Sita asked him to wait till his sons returned, so that she could give him the traditional Pindam of rice and til. He refused to wait, asking her to give him pindams made of the sand in her hand.
Having no other option, she gave him the Pindam he desired with five witnesses – the Akshaya Vatam, the Falguni River, a cow, a Tulsi plant and a Brahmin. Soon, Rama returned and started the rituals. In those days apparently, the ancestors would arrive in person to collect their share, and when Dasaratha did not appear, they wondered why. Sita then told them what had happened, but Rama could not believe that his father would accept pindams made of sand. Sita now mentioned her witnesses, and asked them to tell Rama the truth.

Buddhism :
Before attaining Enlightenment, the prince Siddhārtha Gautama practiced asceticism for six years (ten or twelve years according to some accounts) on the banks of the river, residing in a forest near the village of Uruvilvā. After realizing that strict asceticism would not lead to Enlightenment, he recuperated after bathing in the river and receiving a bowl of milk-rice from the milkmaid Sujātā.
He sat under the nearby pippala tree, where he finally achieved Enlightenment. This tree became known as the Bodhi Tree, and the site became known as Bodh Gayā.

Gaya is of historical significance and is one of the major tourist attractions of the state of Bihar Southern Part. Gaya is 100 kilometres (62 mi) south of Patna, the capital city of Bihar. It is the state's second-largest city, with a population of 470,839, and is the headquarters of Gaya district and Magadh division. The city is surrounded on three sides by small, rocky hills (Mangla-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila, and Brahmayoni), with the Phalgu River on its fourth (eastern) side.
Gaya is sanctified in the Jain, Hindu, and Buddhist religions. Gaya district is mentioned in the great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It is the place where Rama, with Sita and Lakshmana, came to offer pind-daan for their father, Dasharath, and continues to be a major Hindu pilgrimage site for the pind-daan ritual. Bodh Gaya, where Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, and is one of the four holy sites of Buddhism. The Mahabodhi Temple complex at Bodh Gaya is a World Heritage site.

Etymology
------------------
Gaya is one of the best historical sites in India. Gaya is named after the demon Gayasur (meaning the demon Gaya). According to Vayu Purana, Gaya was the name of a demon (Asura) whose body became pious after he performed strict penance and secured blessings from Lord Vishnu. It was said that the body of Gayasura was transformed into the series of rocky hills that make up the landscape of Gaya.

History
-------------------
[Ancient history]
According to modern scholars, the Kikata kingdom from rigvedic period was located at Gaya, Bihar.
Gaya is an ancient city, with a Buddhist documented history dating back to the 6th century BCE when the sage Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, 16 km (9.9 mi) from the modern city, and became the Buddha.
Even before this time, Gaya was a place of pilgrimage for people from around the world. The fame of ancient Gaya derived from the account in the Ramayana of the god Rama coming here to the banks of Phalgu River (called the Niranjana), accompanied by his wife and younger brother, to offer pind-daan for their father Dasharatha, for the moksha of his soul.In the Mahabharata, Gaya is referred to as Gayapuri.
[Modern history]
As attested by Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in the early nineteenth century, the city was divided into two areas: a sacred area in the southern part of the city, called Gaya; and the larger secular area, which may have been known by the Muslim community as Allahabad. During the British rule, the commercial and administrative area of the secular zone was formally named Saheb Ganj by British policy reformer Thomas Law, who was a district officer in Gaya in the late nineteenth century.
Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, founder of the All India Kisan Sabha peasant movement in 1936, established an ashram at Neyamatpur, Gaya, which later became the centre of the freedom struggle in Bihar.

Culture
---------------------
[Pilgrimage]
The city of Gaya is a holy place of Hinduism, with a great number of Hindu deities represented in the engravings, paintings and carvings of its shrines. Of particular importance are the sites in the city associated with Vishnu, in particular the Phalgu River and the shrine Vishnupad Mandir, or Vishnupada, which is marked by a large footprint of Lord Vishnu engraved in a basalt block. Gaya is the location at which Rama, with Sita and Lakshmana, offered pind-daan for his father, Dasharatha. Gaya has since remained a site of key importance for the performance of the pind-daan ritual.
[World Heritage site at Bodh Gaya]
The Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya was listed as a World Heritage site by the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 26th session, on 26 June 2002.
The 50-metre-high (160 ft) Mahabodhi Temple central to the complex was first built by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. The main part of the present structure dates from the 5th–6th centuries CE. It is one of the earliest and best-preserved Buddhist temples built entirely of brick dating from the later Gupta period. The Bodhi Tree (Ficus religiosa), the most important of the sacred places within the complex, is reputedly a descendant of the original tree under which Siddhārtha Gautama attained enlightenment and became the Buddha.

VISHNUPAAD
Vishnupada Mandir (Hindi: विष्णुपद मंदिर) is an ancient temple in Gaya, India. It is a Hindu temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
This temple is located along the Falgu River, marked by a footprint of Lord Vishnu known as Dharmasila, incised into a block of basalt. The Bhumihar Brahmins have been the traditional priests at Vishnupad Mandir in Gaya as Gayawal Pandas and in the adjoining districts like Hazaribagh.[3] Several legendary saints as Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Sankaradeva and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu have visited this shrine.

MANGLAGAURI
The Mangla Gauri temple in Gaya, Bihar, India has been mentioned in Padma Purana, Vayu Purana and Agni Purana and in other scriptures and tantric works. This temple is among the eighteen maha shaktipeeth. The present temple dates back to 15th century. The shrine is dedicated to Shakti or the mother Goddess in the predominantly Vaishnavite pilgrimage center of Gaya. Mangalagauri is worshiped as the Goddess of benevolence. This temple constitutes an Upa-Shakti Pitha — where it is believed that a part of the body of Shakti fell according to mythology. Here Shakti is worshiped in the form of a breast, a symbol of nourishment. It is believed that whoever comes to maa durga with his wishes and prayers, returns successfully with all of prayers and wishes come true.
The temple is facing east and is built on top of the Mangalagauri hill. A flight of steps and a motorable road lead to it. The sanctum houses the symbol of the Goddess and it has some finely carved ancient relief sculptures. A small hall or mandap stands in front of the temple. The courtyard houses a fire pit for the home.
There are two minor shrines dedicated to Shiva and images of Mahishasura Mardini, Durga and Dakshina Kali.
The temple complex encompasses of temples of Maa Kali, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva.
