Hampton is a suburban area on the north bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England, which includes Hampton Court Palace. Hampton is served by two railway stations, including one immediately south of Hampton Court Bridge in East Molesey.
Hampton adjoins Bushy Park on two sides and is west of Hampton Wick and Kingston upon Thames. There are long strips of public riverside in Hampton and the Hampton Heated Open Air Pool is one of the few such swimming pools in Greater London. The riverside, on the reach above Molesey Lock, has residential islands and grand or decorative buildings including Garrick's House and the Temple to Shakespeare; also on the river is the Astoria Houseboat recording studio. Hampton Ferry provides access across the Thames to the main park of Molesey and the Thames Path National Trail.
The most common type of housing in the north of the district is terraced homes; in the south is it semi-detached. At the western edge of London, many workers commute to adjacent counties, or to Central London; education, health and social work, retail, transport and catering businesses are also significant local employers.
The Anglo-Saxon parish of Hampton converted to secular use in the 19th century included present-day Hampton, Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick and hamlet of Hampton Court surrounding Hampton Court Palace which together are called The Hamptons. The combined population of the Hamptons was 37,131 at the 2001 census. The name Hampton may come from the Anglo-Saxon words hamm meaning an enclosure in the bend of a river and ton meaning farmstead or settlement.
The Christian churches in Hampton and Hampton Hill work together as Churches Together Around Hampton. The church buildings are a significant presence in the area many of them being architecturally stand-alone listed buildings in otherwise often quite homogenous 20th century housing estates. The ministers and members provide a range of services for the community.
Garrick's Temple hosts a free Sunday afternoon Shakespeare exhibition (14.00–17.00) from early April to 30 October and a series of summer drama, music and exhibitions. Hampton Youth Project has been an economically and recreationally resourceful youth centre since 1990. Built in a converted coach depot on the Nurserylands Estate it offers a wide programme of activities for those aged 11–19. Parks include borough-sponsored football pitches and tennis courts in the north and west of the district and children's playgrounds there and in Bushy Park and Hampton Village Green in the east and south.
Hampton Station is on the London Waterloo to Shepperton train line. The Library is in a Georgian building on Thames Street with a double blue plaque to two former residents, the singer John Beard and William Ewart MP, the Politician behind the Public Libraries Act 1850.
In keeping with its lack of high rise buildings, the district has no dual carriageways, its main routes the A308 and A312, have in their busiest sections an additional filter or bus lane. Bus routes that serve Hampton are the 111, R68 and 216. The 411 and R70 and 285 serve Hampton Court, Nurserylands and Hampton Hill respectively.
The main station is towards the south-west and by the main parades of shops on either side of the line: Hampton; just north of Hampton Hill is Fulwell railway station; both are on the Shepperton Branch Line. Just south of Hampton Court neighbourhood, clustered about the Tudor, Stuart and Georgian Palace and Gardens is Hampton Court railway station on the Hampton Court Branch Line. Hampton Wick railway station is on the Kingston Loop Line. The London terminus for both lines is London Waterloo.

Kingston upon Thames, also known as Kingston, is an area of south west London, England, located 10 miles south west of Charing Cross. Kingston upon Thames is the administrative centre of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, and identified as a major metropolitan centre in the London Plan.
Kingston upon Thames lies approximately 33 feet (10 metres) above sea level. Kingston upon Thames is notable as the ancient market town in which Saxon kings were crowned. Arundel is a market town and civil parish in a steep vale of the South Downs, West Sussex, England. Arundel lies 49 miles SSW of London, 18 miles WNW of the English Channel city of Brighton, and 10 miles east of the county city of Chichester. Larger nearby towns include Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.
The much-conserved town with large green buffers has a medieval castle and Roman Catholic cathedral. Although smaller in population than most other parishes, Arundel has a museum and comes second behind much larger Chichester in its number of listed buildings in West Sussex. The River Arun runs through the eastern side of the town of Arundel .
Arundel was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Reform Act 1835. From 1836-1889 the town had its own Borough police force with a strength of three. In 1974 Arundel became part of the Arun district, and now is a civil parish with a town council.
Arundel civil parish occupies an area somewhat larger than its built-up clusters, with the old town towards the north and the new to the south, separated by a main road. Arundel town is a major bridging point over the River Arun as it was the lowest road bridge until the opening of the Littlehampton swing bridge in 1908. Arundel Castle was built by the Normans to protect that vulnerable fairly wooded plain to the north of the valley through the South Downs. The town later grew up on the slope below the castle to the south.
Arundel includes meadows to the south but is clustered north of the A27 road, which narrowly avoids the town centre by a short and congested single carriageway bypass. Plans for a more extensive, HQDC bypass were debated intensely between 1980 and 2010 and built a junction for it at Crossbush. Arundel railway station is on the Arun Valley Line. The Monarch's Way long-distance footpath passes through the town and crosses the river here, while just under five miles north and north-west of the town the route of the South Downs Way runs. The town itself lies outside the boundaries of the South Downs National Park.
Arundel is home to Arundel Castle, seat of the Duke of Norfolk; and to Arundel Cathedral, seat of the (Catholic) Bishop of Arundel and Brighton. On 6 July 2004, Arundel was granted Fairtrade Town status. People born in Arundel are known locally as Mullets, due to the presence of mullet in the River Arun. Arundel is home to one of the oldest Scout Groups in the world. 1st Arundel (Earl of Arundel's Own) Scout Group was formed in 1908 only a few weeks after Scouting began.

Teddington is an affluent suburban area in south west London in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Until 1965, it was in the historic county of Middlesex. Teddington is on the north bank of the Thames, just after the start of a long meander, between Hampton Wick and Strawberry Hill, Twickenham. Mostly residential, it stretches from the Thames to Bushy Park with a long high street reaching down to pubs, restaurants, leisure premises, fields and fitness clubs by the riverside, having a pedestrian suspension bridge over the lowest non-tidal lock on the Thames, Teddington Lock. Teddington's centre is mid-rise urban development.
Teddington is bisected by an almost continuous road of shops, offices and other facilities running from the river to Bushy Park. There are two clusters of offices on this route; on the edge of Bushy Park the NPL, NMO and LGC form a scientific centre. Around Teddington Station and the town centre are a number of offices in industries such as direct marketing and IT, which include Tearfund and BMT Limited. Several riverside businesses and houses were redeveloped in the last quarter of the 20th century as blocks of riverside flats. As of 2016 the riverside side of the former Teddington Studios is being developed to provide modern apartment blocks and other smaller houses.
The first/last lock on the Thames, Teddington Lock, which is just within Ham's boundary, is accessible via the Teddington Lock Footbridges. In 2001 the RNLI opened the Teddington Lifeboat Station, one of the four Thames lifeboat stations, below the lock on the Teddington side. The station became operational in January 2002 and is the only volunteer station on the river.
Teddington railway station is on the long-electrified Kingston Loop Line close to the junction of the Shepperton Branch Line. Trains run both ways to London Waterloo: one way via Kingston upon Thames and Wimbledon every 15 minutes, the other via Richmond and Putney every 30 minutes. Trains also run to Shepperton every 30 minutes. Teddington is served by buses to other London locations, including London Heathrow, West Croydon and Hammersmith
Teddington Studios, a digital widescreen television studio complex and one of the former homes of Thames Television, opened in 1958. Most major rebuilding from bomb damage in World War II was completed by 1960. Chain stores began to open up, including Tesco and Sweatshop in 1971.

Surbiton is a suburban area of south-west London within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Surbiton is situated next to the River Thames, 11.0 miles south west of central London. urbiton was formerly within the County of Surrey, but became part of Greater London in 1965 following the London Government Act 1963, together with many areas including neighbouring Kingston and Richmond. Surbiton possesses a mixture of Art-Deco courts, more recent residential blocks and grand 19th century townhouses blending into a sea of semi-detached 20th century housing estates.
Surbiton railway station opened in 1838, and was originally named Kingston-upon-Railway. It was only renamed Surbiton to distinguish it from the new Kingston railway station on the Shepperton branch line, which opened on 1 January 1869. The present station has an art deco façade. As a result, Kingston is now on a branch line, whereas passengers from Surbiton (smaller in comparison) can reach London Waterloo in about 15 minutes on a fast direct service; as well as places further afield, including Portsmouth and Southampton. It was once home to Surbiton Studios which were owned by Stoll Pictures, before the company shifted its main production to Cricklewood Studios.
Surbiton is served by a number of regular bus services. London Buses routes 71, 281, 406, 418, 465, K1, K2, K3 and K4 and Surrey Bus Routes 514 and 515 all serve the area. Surbiton railway station provides rail links with London (Waterloo), Surrey and Hampshire.
Surbiton station features in the 2009 film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Blood Prince, with actors Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore. Surbiton is popularly remembered as an icon of suburbia in such British television programmes as The Good Life.

Molesey is a suburban district comprising two large villages, East Molesey and West Molesey, just outside the edge of Greater London. Molesey is located on the southern bank of the River Thames in the northeast of the borough of Elmbridge in Surrey, England, with the post town of East Molesey extending north across the Thames into the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
Molesey lies between 11.7 and 13.5 miles from Charing Cross and forms part of the capital's contiguous suburbs within the Greater London Urban Area. It has the London dialling code (020), and was from 1839 until 2000 under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police.
East and West Molesey share a high street, and there is a second retail and restaurant-lined street (Bridge Road) close to Hampton Court Palace in the eastern part of the district, which is also home to Hampton Court railway station in Transport for London's Zone 6. Molesey Hurst or Hurst Park is a large park by the River Thames in the north of the area, and is home to East Molesey Cricket Club. The Hampton Ferry runs from here to Hampton on the Middlesex bank, from where it is a short walk to the central area of Hampton.
Molesey is divided into three wards of the United Kingdom: Molesey South, East and North. The majority of Molesey's detached properties are in the east, which also contains the highest proportion of apartments of the three wards.
Molesey is directly south of the River Thames, with several large reservoirs bordering the town to the west and south that provide water within the London Basin. Some of these are now disused and are being converted into nature reserves. To the west lie Bessborough Reservoir and Knight Reservoir, to the north-west Molesey Reservoirs, to the south Island Barn Reservoir, and to the south-west Queen Elizabeth II Reservoir. There are walks beside Metropolitan green belt fields to the south along the river Mole to Esher, and to the west along the Thames Path to Walton-on-Thames.
Hampton Court Palace is immediately north-east of East Molesey across Hampton Court Bridge. The Palace, together with the southern part of Bushy Park and most of Hampton Court Park are in the post town East Molesey. Molesey Lock is just above Hampton Court Bridge, downstream of Sunbury Lock and upstream of Teddington Lock. Cigarette Island Park is just below the bridge, occupying the eastern extremity of the town. Hurst Park is on the south bank of the Thames, from where there is a daily ferry service to Hampton on the Middlesex bank. It once had a horse racing course but no longer does.
Molesey itself has some interesting landmarks, including three listed Church of England churches and The Bell, a public house, formerly known as The Crooked House, built in the mid-15th century. Other Landmarks include The Jubilee Fountain in Bridge Road. There are three designated Conservation Areas in East Molesey. Other historic buildings include the Grade II-listed Matham Manor, an altered 15th-century house with timber frames and red brick; and a 16th-century house, Quillets Royal, with an 18th-century extension (The Manor House). Both buildings lie near The Bell in Bell Road/Matham Road.
There are no permanent traveller sites in East or West Molesey, but there is believed to be a significant settled traveller population in the Field Common area to the south of Molesey Heath and in adjacent Hersham, which featured in the TV series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Elmbridge borough as a whole has also had the equal largest number of illegal traveller sites in Surrey in recent years and the former leader of Elmbridge Council referred to this being a particular problem in Molesey in extensive press coverage of the issue which has become contentious in recent times.
The railway station in East Molesey is Hampton Court railway station in Transport for London's Zone 6, operated by South West Trains. This is the terminus of a stopping commuter service to Waterloo that takes around thirty-five minutes. Principal stops are Surbiton, Wimbledon and Clapham Junction. During the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show extra trains run to and from London.

Thames Path - Source to London - Shepperton to Mortlake via Hampton Court - Day 10 of 12
Day 10 of 12 of an epic walking adventure through some of England's most beautiful countryside and incredible history. A walk that covers 186 miles from the source of the river in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in the east of London via historic towns of Oxford, Henley and Royal Windsor to name a few.

Again up at 7am, leaving Shepperton at 7.45, nice early start. The Path did a strange detour to river and back to road. Then carried on over the bridge. We walked through the pretty Hurst Park, which used to be a race course, and after walking 6 miles arrived in Hampton. Visiting the Five At The Bridge cafe, which being a Saturday morning in London had many cyclists and walkers in.
Walking over the bridge, the very Spectacular Hampton Court Palace comes into view. This is well worth a visit maybe for a day. Make sure you walk through part of the grounds, re-joining the Thames just before the actual Palace is reached. Hampton Court was built for Henry V111 in 1515, and is a very impressive Tudor building.
The river and river bank definitely becomes a lot busier from here on in, and it is lovely to see so many people out enjoying themselves. We carried on past Kingston, to Teddington Lock, the last lock on the Thames. From here the river is tidal, with a rise and fall of between 5-7 meters resulting in some very strong currents, very different from the river upstream of here. From Teddington Lock, the path is on either bank of the Thames, if the North Bank route if taken from The Lock to the Thames Barrier it is 2.5km longer. It is nice to swop banks in order to see the best sites and as there are numerous bridges, it is possible to do this.
We continued along the Southbank past Ham Wetlands, Richmond, and Kew Gardens, to Mortlake. We then caught the train from Mortlake to Clapham junction, and checked into the Travelodge at Battersea for 2 nights. A good plan then the larger rucksack can be left there for a day.

Thames Path - Source to London - Royal Windsor to Shepperton - Day 9 of 12
Day 9 of 12 of an epic walking adventure through some of England's most beautiful countryside and incredible history. A walk that covers 186 miles from the source of the river in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in the east of London via historic towns of Oxford, Henley and Royal Windsor to name a few.
Friday 5th April Windsor to Shepperton Day Nine

Leaving the Travelodge at 7.45am we walked by the river, then the road through Datchet, rejoining the river at Albert bridge. We were disappointed with the direction that the path took, as views across to Windsor Castle were rare. Again in hindsight I would have considered taking the path through Windsor park to see more of this great castle, especially as part of the path follows the road anyway.
We carried on reaching the very historic site of Runnymead at 10am. It was here in 1215 King John signed The Magna Carta, on which the constitutions and laws of many countries are based. There is also a memorial to JF Kennedy slightly up hill, off the path, but well worth diverting to visit. There are toilets here but the cafe was shut for refurbishment.
The path continues under the M25, passing an old Coal Post from 1831, marking the boundary where historically merchants had to pay a tax levy on coal. By the river behind the War Memorial in Staines is a copy of the London Stone. This represents the upstream limit of the City's rights from 1285 to 1857. All these are signs that London is getting nearer.
We ate lunch in The George Wetherspoons pub in Staines.
Today it has not rained, but is not very warm. We are looking forward to getting into London soon. It is still very quiet on the tow path and the river. Nice houses now line the river banks making the walk more interesting, than the previous meadows. There is still plenty of birdlife along the Thames. We have not met anyone else walking to London, since the source!!
Just prior to Shepperton the path splits. The Southerly part of the walk can be reached by taking a small ferry. The ferry is £2.50 for a single fare, and can be requested by ringing the bell. We were heading North, as we had not been able to discover in advance if the ferry was running. We reached our next destination The Anchor in Shepperton at 4pm after 16 miles. There were various restaurants and pubs to eat in, but we bought our dinner from Sainsbury's.
