U.S. Route 11 or U.S. Highway 11 (US-11) is a major north–south United States Numbered Highway extending 1,645 miles (2,647 km) across the eastern U.S. The southern terminus of the route is at US 90 in Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in eastern New Orleans, Louisiana. The northern terminus is at the Rouses Point–Lacolle 223 Border Crossing in Rouses Point, New York. The route continues across the border into Canada as Route 223. US 11, created in 1926, maintains most of its original route. The route north of Knoxville, Tennessee, follows a route similar to Interstate 81 (I-81). While it is signed as a north–south route, it physically travels in a northeast–southwest direction. Until 1929, US 11 ended just south of Picayune, Mississippi, at the Pearl River border with Louisiana. It was extended through Louisiana after that. The Maestri Bridge, which carries US 11 across Lake Pontchartrain, served as the only route to New Orleans from the east for six weeks after Hurricane Katrina due to its sturdy construction. The storm virtually destroyed the I-10 Twin Span Bridge and damaged the Fort Pike Bridge on US 90. I-81, constructed in the 1960s, parallels the route of US 11 in many areas. Beyond I-81's southern terminus, other Interstates run along corridors paralleling US 11, specifically I-59, which is joined to I-81 by I-40, I-75, and I-24. Heading generally northeast, US-11 passes through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York.

Then I crossed back over the Susquehanna on the Veterans Memorial Bridge at Shamokin Dam, and continued east on PA 61 to Paxinos, then along PA 487 through Elysburg to Knoebels.

US Routes 11 and 15 in Pennsylvania - from Liverpool to Shamokin Dam

Let's ride along the western shore of the Susquehanna River on a pleasant Saturday evening.

The Great Shamokin Path Rail Trail (A Portion of the Former Rural Valley Railroad)

The Great Shamokin Path was a Native American Trail running across Pennsylvania from Shamokin (now Sunbury) along the banks of the mighty Susquehanna River to Kittanning on the Allegheny River. The rail trail is 3.5 miles (or 4 miles long) depending on the source, occupying a portion of the former Rural Valley Railroad. The trail passes through or near to the towns of Numine, Rural Valley and Yatesboro, along Cowanshannock Creek (parallel to State Route 85). Various signage and historical markers for this trail can be found throughout PA (along the original trail).

The character of this trail varies from grassy to rough graded to swampy (at times). It is best enjoyed with a mountain bike. I found the ride to take about 45 minutes out, and then made it back to my vehicle in about 15 or 16 minutes by following State Route 85. The bulk of my ride on the Great Shamokin Path is shown, however I have recorded the ride on SR 85 at the end in silent 4X timelapse. The entire movie was made with my Samsung Galaxy S9+ Android Phone (mostly in 1440 by 1440 square format, with the final time lapse being the shape of the phone in vertical orientation (since there is no option to record timelapse in 1440 by 1440) unless you record everything and speed it up when you are editing.

Spring in the Pennsylvania Wilds | PA Grand Canyon and Victorian Charm in Historic Wellsboro, PA

Join us for a weekend in the Pennsylvania wilds! Home to amazing landscape including Pennsylvania's very own Grand Canyon and many historic small towns, the Pennsylvania wilds is one of the largest expanses of green space between New York City and Chicago.

One of the most notable destinations in north-central Pennsylvania is the PA Grand Canyon. Formally known as Pine Creek Gorge, the canyon gorge stretches over 45 miles with depths of 1,500 feet. It regularly ranks as one of the best hiking and biking areas around. Located in Colton Point (west rim) and Leonard Harrison (east rim) State Parks, the gorge is the perfect destination to take in nature (and maybe see some wildlife). Come with us as we hike the west Rim Trail and take in the sites and sounds of the gorge and the park.

A short drive from the PA Grand Canyon is the historic, gaslight-lined streets of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. A trip to the Canyon isn't complete without a walk down Wellsboro's main street taking in the historic Penn-Wells Hotel, gas-lit streetlamps, and the small town charm that makes Wellsboro shine. We start our adventure visiting the iconic Wellsboro Diner for a hearty breakfast before setting out on our journey. We made sure to try a slice of their famous pies (yes, for breakfast!) and we couldn't recommend a slice more. We made sure to head over to Wellsboro's City Park to see the famous Wynken Blynken and Nod statue and fountain. Its whimsy was the perfect way to cap the morning.

A trip isn't complete without checking out Pop's Culture Shoppe--the place to go for all things games, comics, and community gathering. Every Friday night the shop hosts a community game night where you can gather with friends (or locals) to play any of their hundreds of games. We were quickly welcomed with open arms and pulled into a new board game (which we later bought). It's a great way to meet new people, get a feel for the area, and spend a few minutes or a few hours.

As you drive into Wellsboro, you can't help but notice the Victorian streetlamps lining the main street. Unique to the town, the lamps are still gas-powered, which helps bring the Victorian charm to the area. Similarly, the Penn-Wells Hotel is a must see. It has been around since the 1800s and certainly brings the nostalgia as you step into the turn-of-the-century lobby and take in the displays of artifacts, photographs, and history. Make sure you grab a drink at the hotel's lounge, they offer historic drinks that you can't easily find in other bars.
