This is the second episode in a four-part video series about a Botswana self drive safari that my friend, JI de Wet, and I did in October 2021. We called it The Botswana Trip and in this episode I feature the magical Nxai Pan National Park, which is not only a Botswana overlanding hotspot, but also a wildlife haven!

We camped at South Camp in Nxai Pans and spent most of our time around Nxai Pan Waterhole near South Camp itself. Because it was so hot and dry, the waterhole attracted loads of general game, 100's of elephants and a big pride of lions as well.

In this video I share some Botswana overlanding tips that will be very helpful to anyone doing a Botswana self drive safari from Kubu Island to Nxai Pan National Park, including distances, road conditions, best stands for camping as well as game viewing tips.

Although this was my first time at Nxai Pans, it has become one of my new favourite destinations in Botswana and I can't wait to go back! Enjoy the video and please remember to like, subscribe and comment.

Campsite Review: Third Bridge Camp - Moremi Game Reserve (Travel in Botswana)

Camping in Botswana

Deeper into Moremi now, we head to the well known and much-loved Third Bridge campsite, situated in the Okavango Delta. Though the campsite we booked is not the one we get when we arrive, we still find ourselves in a great site, with a beautiful big shady tree, and located close to the ablutions. It's also one of the more private sites, with vegetation on both sides separating us from neighbours. Though our Wild Dog battery troubles continue, we still have an absolutely incredible stay at Third Bridge. I would definitely recommend this for anyone willing to camp unfenced (with lions very much right on your doorstep), and off-grid. An absolute bucket list camping adventure.

The camp features great well-kept ablutions, hot water from solar geysers, and a fire pit, with beautiful shade on almost every site. The sites are also all clearly demarcated, which is excellent. They also have taps on-site, and the water is said to be potable.

Top 5 activities one can do as a tourist in Kasane Botswana

Another exciting video about what you can do when you visit this tourism hub. Kasane is a tourism dominated area

DINAKA SAFARI LODGE ACCOMMODATION CENTRAL KALAHARI BOTSWANA | ДИНАКА САФАРИ ЛОДЖ КАЛАХАРИ БОТСВАНА

Dinaka Lodge:

Dinaka Safari Lodge is an intimate Botswana luxury safari camp perched on the northern boundary of Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Travel to a wild world where a colorful array of birds, herds of graceful antelope, and Kalahari black-maned lions roam.

Giraffe, wildebeest, oryx, and brown hyena can all be spotted on daily game drives. Graceful impala and sturdy warthog congregate to drink from nearby watering holes. Photographers will adore the underground hides that offer views of these watering holes for amazing photographic opportunities. In addition, birders will find joy in the 200 identified species, including kori bustard, crimson-breasted shrike, and pale chanting goshawks.

Walking safaris allow you to see the reserve from the point of view of the resident species. With your guide, discover animal tracks, spot small reptiles, and learn about the smaller mammal species like bat-eared fox and honey badger.

Dinaka, meaning “horns”, is a private reserve located on the northern boundary of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The reserve offers an educational walk with San Bushmen in addition to day and night game drives. Year-round water holes result in spectacular photographic opportunities either from the underground bunker, hide or vehicle. The perfect contrast to a stay in the Okavango Delta, with an added hidden treasure.

Situated alongside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the focus of activities at Dinaka is exploring the Kalahari experience with wildlife ranging from giraffe to the antelope, small mammals like the honey badger, bat eared fox and porcupine to predators including the Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Our window seat guarantee ensures no more than four guests per vehicle when out on game drives. Alternatively, you may get more up close and personal with nature on foot with guided bush walks. Birding is particularly spectacular as Dinaka hosts over 200 different bird species including the Kori Bustard and Crimson Breasted Shrike and a high concentration of Pale Chanting Goshawks.

Makgadikgadi Pans - Botswana - Hair Buddha Travel vlog

Wanne see more travel adventure? Get more travel tips?
Subscribe to my travel channel.

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a salt pan - with an area of 3,900 kilometers. Situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. However, it is one of the largest salt flats in the world. Lying south-west of the Okavango Delta and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert.
Makgadikgadi Pans National Park comprises nutritious grasslands, attracting thousands of animals. It is, however, an area of low rainfall and the Boteti River rarely flows to capacity - but often has everlasting pools that attracts waterbuck, bushbuck and hippos.

Journeying into this magical land and across the desolate pans, you will somehow feel its ancient glamour. If you’re planning a Botswana safari - a traveler's guide to the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is definitely what you need.
The best time to visit the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. The pans itself is only accessible during the dry season - from March to October. When the glaring white surface spreads so far that you can see the curvature of the earth. This season includes peak winter days with sunny and warm daylight hours, but the nights are extremely cold. However, from August to November - windy weather sets in, with October being the hottest month - the wildebeest and herd of zebra migrates slowly towards the Boteti River in anticipation of the rains.

Meanwhile, the wet summer season of November to March. Road become impossible - but the Pans usually retain water into April or May. Which is great for birding and game watching.
Games such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest and zebras move slowly from the pans in the South East of the park, to the Boteti River on the Western side of the park. Animals accumulate in their thousands during this migration - one can also see shy antelope such as duiker and bushbuck in heavily wooded areas beside the river.

The main objective in visiting the Makgadikgadi National Park is not to view games only, but to experience true remoteness and absolute isolation. However, the best way to view the pans during this season is to fly over the pans. You will then also see the spectacular flamingo flocks.

The sheets of water that cover the northeastern section of the Makgadikgadi during the first few months of wetter years attract a phenomenal marvel of water birds. The arrival of this water stimulates the birth of millions of tiny shrimps and other crustaceans otherwise lying dormant below the white salt crust. Greater and Lesser flamingos arrive, even journeying from as far off as the Great Rift Valley in East Africa to partake in one of Africa’s largest avian feasts. From a helicopter, the flamingos appear as enormous pink clouds in a shimmering silver sky. Helicopter flights over the flamingos are run by Helicopter Horizons and can be organized through San Camp, Jacks Camp and other accommodation options in the area.
